Oh I agree Hammer! No way the Corsair was gonna fly safely off a Colossus class CV! Even with the longest catapult on any British built CVL (25th of May) the Argies had problems operating even the Super Etendard off one of them.

Not as I understand it, A-7E would of been marginal to unsafe on the Sao Paulo.

The A-7 would have been just fine off her. the French Navy considered the Type in 1973 when JagM was cancelled but (as usual) went with a national design. I dont think the Brazilian Navy ever looked at the A-7 as there were none around that hadnt been flown to death and werent worn out. The A-4KUs were available and had barely been used and had not done any carrier cycles.

The issue is the stroke length and run out distance for the elderly catapult and arrestor gear fitted to the Sao Paulo, the Americans actually had retired A-6E and A-7E sitting at AMARG with plenty of cat and trap cycles left on them. The A-7E is superior to the vanilla A-4 in all respects but the launch and and landing characteristics of that type and A-6E are unsafe or marginal at best for the Sao Paulo. The same again with the S-3, Greyhound and Hawkeye. Apparently the the F/A-18 Hornet can operate off her as can the Rafale but with a compromised load.

The only choice was the A-4 or the Super Etendard realistically. With the Kuwaiti having a number of fairly late build A-4 with zero cat and trap cycles on them and relatively low hours in dry conditions it was a perfect match.

The A-7 would have no problem operating off the Sao Paulo. The A-6……….would. The A-4KUs were more of a deal at the time.

I understand all the points your making………..but in my mind spending great big wopping gobs of cash for a capability that you are most likely not going to use is foolish. I know its a very nice capability to have, but it seems unaffordable.

the systems on T45 are at least one generation more advanced than Aegis ships, on a more seaworthy hull.
face it, the entire rational behind the Z class, stealthy ship with a high power radar system, is retarded.

    I agree.
