gone are the days of the Vulcan, and the UK’s ability to produce its own strategic bombers, tankers, airliners, and transport aircraft

they’ve filled the void by buying French and American except in the strategic bomber arena..
does the UK need to bring this capability back?

    No.

Original claim. We know from later disclosures the RN had a formerly undisclosed way to disable the fuses on Exocets. The French government supplied the codes for the Argies missiles. Only certain warships had the capacity to send out the signal, Sheffield being one. The Glamorgan did not.

Sheffield didnt transmit anything………..she was sitting there dumb and blind. That the missile didnt detonate had nothing to do with anything the RN did……….and it really didnt mater anyways, even without detonation it killed the ship,

3 hits out of 5 launches isn’t bad!

It was 3 hits out of 6 launches……..the one that hit the “County” class was a land launch. Of the 3 hits, 2 detonated.

Probably……….the Ford PCU is getting pretty active over here now. There is ALOT of new equipment on that vessel, and it will take some time to iron out the bugs. Hopefuly it will go smoother than with the LCS nightmare.

True true………..but the US Navy does like to have an airplane that can takeoff with a payload, so they will probably stick with the 35C and SH.:very_drunk:

Seems the Ford will be way over budget and not as capable as hoped when delivered. http://www.dodbuzz.com/2013/09/06/gao-blasts-navys-ford-class-carrier-program/

Swerve makes sense with his point on the Mirage IV. Also, the MN would be hampered with the same problem the RN faced, lack of AEW coverage. I think the ability to refuel the Crusaders while they are on CAP would be a big plus, and the lack of SSNs could be somewhat mollifies with a very good surface attack capability with the SuE. The Alize also would give them a very useful surface search capability.
I’m fairly certain the French would do everything they could to have both CVs down there along with the Jeanne d Arc. Was Crotale in service back then?

How is the V-22 Deathtrap going to refuel F-15s, 16s and A-10s?

It would be interesting. The MN will have (probably) two CVs, a CG and two DDGs plus some DDs and smaller warships. maybe two sqdrns of F-8s and two to threee sqdrns of SuEs. A VERY good (for the time) surface strike capability with the SuEs.

I do not believe the Sea Vixen could operate from 25 de Mayo. Other than the Harrier, the Skyhawk was pretty much it for a Collossus/Majestic class carrier. She even had problems with the SuEs.
Im not seeing why all the a/c are being switched to British ones………in real life, Argentina had pretty good relations with UK until the war.

FINALY someone brings a little reality into this inane thread! The whole point of the thread demands just too much suspension of reality…………I guess I can get by the supposition that Russia (USSR) somehow maintains control of the Falklands (even that it maintains control of them after WW1 wich would be bizzare indeed) and post WW2 it still has them. OK.
What does Soviet Union DO with them? Have they remained a stagnant backwaterfishing/wheather station? Or have “colonists” been sent down? If its the “colonist” route then there will probably be a military presence on the islands, and then that changes the ENTIRE ballgame down South America way. For starters, the US would maintain a sizable naval presence down there……in fact there would be a very good chance that US forces would be based in Argentina. The Argentine military would be much better equiped than was the case against UK. I think we could very well see an Argentine AF equiped with F-4s and Buccanears. Interesting.
For those that seemed to love bringing up the Soviets “access” to Angola……….you do remember that Angola was an active war zone at the time dont you? I doubt the SAAF would have approved of Soviet stratigic bombers operating in that area. It would probably be safe to say that Reagan and Thatcher would disapprove also. The chances are high that any arms santions against South Africa would “go away” at that point.
the last thing I’d like to bring up is that people here are supposing that the Soviet Navy would be able to pull off something that it had NEVER done befor, and something that it was not designed to do, nor in all likelyhood even have the logistics capability of doing. The RN with its hundreds of years of experience had a very difficult time of it. The only experience in long range ops the Soviets could look back on was a Russian deployment in 1905 that didnt go too well for them.
