Its significant no doubt. Its one thing for the theory to note that the Bars outranges all the present variants of the APG66/68 with slotted antenna’s..another for an actual exercise to prove it. The chance to devise countermeasures against an enemy’s radar and test them out in an actual exercise is worth its weight in gold.

To confirm this deal would be well nigh impossible for the GOI and the Russians…but then again India had no problems declaring that it had leased a Charlie long back, but then again we werent a nuke capable state (openly declared) either back then.

Well it depends. Where the near miss was and what it knocked out!

IMO the reason why a/c are so complicated and expensive now is simply coz they’re too good. when you make a plane you have to make it better than its predecessor, and over the years through P-51 to F-86 to F-100 to F-4 to F-15 they’ve just got better and better and correspondingly more expensive and with correspondingly fewer numbers. F-22 and Eurocanards basically continue this trend. u cant run away from it because u will always have to make a new plane better than the one before it. so fighter a/c will just get more and more complex and expensive. maybe one day we’ll see a fighter that is so good it’s so expensive the economy can only afford to buy one of it.

we’ve made a new start with UCAVs, and saved complexity and cost by removing the pilot. but for the above reasons UCAVs will also start getting larger and more complex over time…

Well put. A F-15 today is no Spitfire of yesterday!

Cant make a F-15 by asking for pots and pans like Beaverbrook did, can you?

The WW2 birds were metal, fabric and wood- with an engine, wires and guns!

Todays a/cs are high performance instruments of mans tech prowess, they represent all the knowledge that could be squeezed into their airframes.

Never ending germs indeed. Perhaps these words needed to be considered!

    “A.E. Houseman:

Three minutes thought would suffice to find this out; but thought is irksome and three minutes is a long time.”

Hardly unexpected is it? Cant see it, cant “feel it” thanks to its LPI radar and its fast, and highly manoueverable.

The F/A22 will wipe the floor with any opponent.

Awesome. The range of weaponry available to Flanker variants is on a constant increase.
On a tangential thought- if the PLAAF and the IAF were to ever duke it out with KH31’s galore, both sides ADGES would be in a world of hurt and the Russians would be laughing all the way to the bank. 😉

Don’t fret if Pak gets F-16s

NEW DELHI: India need not lose sleep even if Pakistan manages to acquire more F-16 fighters from the US. After plastering American combat pilots in an exercise earlier this year, IAF top guns now have another reason to be gung ho: their top-notch mean machines have proved more than a match for F-16s, the much-vaunted ‘fighting falcons’.

Russian-origin Sukhoi-30MKI jets are apparently outgunning American F-16s on “several aspects” at the ongoing Indo-Singapore air combat exercise in Gwalior.

This is the first-ever face-off between these two sophisticated war machines originating from the two former Cold War adversaries.

“Our Sukhois are doing very well against the F-16Cs (of Singapore Air Force) in terms of manoeuvrability, sophistication of avionics and weapon systems. Similarly, our MiG-29s and Mirage-2000s are also matching up to the F-16s,” say IAF sources.

IAF is pitting even its MiG-21s, which constitute over 45% of India’s combat fleet, against F-16s during the ‘Sindex-Ankush’ exercise in Gwalior.

“Ever since the Pakistanis acquired F-16s from the US in the mid-1980s, we wanted to size them up. So, we are matching almost all our planes with F-16s of the Singapore Air Force, which are more advanced than the F-16s of Pakistan,” said sources.

The IAF has also tasked its elite combat school to develop manoeuvres for MiG-21s to elude the radar cones of F-16s.

IAF spokesperson Squadron Leader Mahesh Upasani only said, “Results of the exercise will be assessed only after the debrief. It’s premature to comment at this stage.”

Instead of F-16s, the US had fielded the F-15C Eagles during the Cope India-04 exercise in February. So, the decks were promptly cleared when Singapore came knocking for training facilities with its F-16s.
