you all seem to be implying that the IWM exhibits are the be all and end all of DX, what would DX be if all the private owners upped sticks and went somewher else, you would have a very dead museum.
You would have all the display space you need, you would also have a lot less visitors.
And by the way, yes i would like to see Dx in a 1930s – 50s era state without all this Norman Foster rubbish, and no i hav’nt forgotten about the yank’s i can’t my wifes uncle was one of them, he doesn’t like whats happened with Dx either. it’s strange he asked me why Dx isn’t looking at it’s flight test and development department in the late 30s early 40s.
Grumy old man – bloody right i am.
Good on you moocher….
Hangers to fill with Hunters and Lightnings and assorted Canberras…
Mind you we wouldn’t have an SR in the UK without the AAM nor a second B-24….but that’doesn’t matter does it? Nobody’s interested in those compared to a Hunter…
Or that the B-52 would still be outside without it… and the B-29 and there might not be space for Sally B at Duxford, but again that’s not a problem is it? Nobody’s interested in those and they don’t represent anything to Duxford…
You may not like it moocher.. but it has had a benficial effect on Duxford…and that has made it possible to do other things..
Yes you’re right, it’s had an effect on Duxford, along with the tank museum and the big hangar at the east end it’s destroyed the historic outlook of Duxford. i have flown into and out of Duxford for many years, from the late 70s upto and including this year. I can say with all honesty Duxford as a historic airfield no longer has the charm it used to have.
Moocher – I think that’s a little unfair! Have you seen Cosford’s creation?
Yes I have, and to be honest david, it’s just as bad – pull em down and build hangars.
doG hates rain organise weather please
Teach dog to hold a brolly.
But the Duxford AAM is a tribute to the members, primarily, of the 8th AF, because of their WW2 links to the East Anglia region (and Duxford in particular).
I think I’m correct in saying it’s the most important collection of US aircraft outside of the US itself. What advantage could possibly be gained by moving the collection to Florida?
It would no longer be a blot on the landscape.
Modify it and put some doors in whilst your doing it!
Pull it down and build a nice shaped hanger instead, better still, pull it down and move it somwhere else, like Florida.
I assume the lady in no7 is one of the prize winners, lucky girl. I used to work with the guy talking to her on BBMF in the early 80s, Steve kingman, good guy, unless he’s changed, had a short fuse though when people messed him around.
As somebody who has a little knowledge of overhaul and maintenance of large aircraft, you can rest assured and money raised will not have been squandered by the engineering staff. If previous track records of maintenance proceedures are followed the beuracratic – administative black hole will take most of the cash and they will then step back and ask why things are going over budget.
I personally wish to see 558 back in the air, I wish the engineering staff (Blokes on the tools not the planners and shiny’s) every succsess. So step back and let them get on with it.
The knowledge and expertise is there with IWM, but I doubt those people were consulted. It’s possible the people asked to paint it were expected to know what they were doing, but clearly specs weren’t asked for or given.
If it’s one solid colour (a la Hendon) simply to show shape and size, it doesn’t matter.
If it’s privately owned, it doesn’t matter (or matters less).
If it belongs to a national *war* museum and is displayed in its name, then it does matter.
From what I understand the finish was applied at Duxford, if that is the case, there is no excuse for in-accuracy, the progress should have been followed up on a regular basis, and corrected or revised as required.
if this was one of my aeroplanes I would carry out stage checks on a very regular basis and also provide as much detailed information as possible.
If you buy it, paint it any colour you want.
however, If duxford is the home of the Spitfire, why did they not research the scheme and portray it accuratly, yes it is only a GRP rep, but I was led to believe IWM Dux was a centre of exellence for preservation and display of historic aircraft.
5/10 Duxford – more effort required.
Victor every time, happy memories from the 70s while working on them.
As an airshow act, Vulcan.
Hello moocher and welcome.
Nice to have another engineer on board. 😀
And if you started on ‘billy-bunters’, what else have you been involved with? And are you involved with anything ‘historic’ now?
Quite a lot of what is now called “historic” I was a member of the Battle of Brittain flight in the 80s working with some of the best guys in the buisiness, guys like Pete (gerbs) Jeffery, Bob Mitchell, Dave Payne, Ian Peart, Steve kingman, Andy Patton the list goes on, a really great bunch of guys to work with and boy can the drink.
I have had a bit of time on the PBY, Bristol Fighter, F4U, F6 & F7F.
Good types and nice to work on.
Really??
Anyway, Welcome to the Forum Moocher and what a great name, it reminds me of the artwork on one of Avro’s Finest.
Mickey the Moocher – good nose art, but I have a feeling the new scheme will be even better. i would like to think the BBMF could through away the PC book and use some really good, if not close to the bone schemes. I see from your post you are a photographer, have you had much luck getting your work published, i suppose you need to be really good to have your work used in the public domain.
Well that’s one way to introduce yourself!
Welcome aboard 🙂
Thank you. 😉
