Foxtrot 01, you mention that Le Mesurier’s diary has been previously publishing. Just wondering if you could give a few details, title, etc, as I’d be keen on getting a copy.
Thanks,
Tim
Thanks for taking the time to post that Graham but I’m after personnel photos of 64 not 65.
I also have “Men of the Battle of Britain” so I am after rarer photos of 64 and especially unpublished photos of the squadron pilots from October 1940 until early 1942.

Thanks for that!
It is as others have said from LIFE magazine, and almost certainly 54 Sqn at Hornchurch in spring/summer 1941.
Many thanks Mudmover.
Can you give me a rough estimate of how many photos of 64 are contained within? I am very interested but don’t really want to fork out 25 quid for the complete book if there are only a few photos.
Cheers,
Tim
I suspect both Barnard and Robinson got this grisly device from Paul Richey’s ‘Fighter Pilot’
Very true XN, actually Richey and his estate were so incensed with Piece of Cake they attempted legal action claiming that Robinson ripped off Fighter Pilot.
I love Fighter Pilot, one of the very, very best memoirs to come out of the war IMHO.
Happy reading!
Tim
Rightyho, here’s the link to DR’s page, scroll down to the “Who He” section and there’s a tiny mention of the new book. To be published by Grove Atlantic, no title yet.
Haven’t got a link but that’s straight from the horse’s mouth, on Robinson’s little piece of the web.
In terms of Blue Man Falling, I would say it’s not as good as Piece of Cake (but it is the chap’s first novel). However I quite enjoyed his descriptions of aerial combat, one encounter between a Hurri and a 109 (with Betty Boop as a personal insignia) was particularly memorable. Gets a bit waffly 2/3’s of the way through but all in all, not a bad read and I’ve seen a lot worse.
He has actually written another WWII based aviation novel and it is to be published in 2008.
In the meantime, have a read of Frank Barnard’s two recent releases. His “Blue Man Falling” is like “Piece of Cake” in that it is set during the Battle of France and is not a bad read at all.
Many thanks for the links Tillerman, hadn’t seen either!
Thanks Martin and TT.
I knew she was a real shambles when found. I was holding off emailing until after I had asked here as there is such a lot of knowledge here. But I’ll fire off an email this evening.
Cheers,
Tim
Starfire is correct, Smik’s ML296 was coded DU-N.
I have a profile of this aircraft which includes the nose art. PM me Benno if you would like a scan.
Cheers,
Smithy.
No problem Andy, it’s awhile ago I know.
Perhaps somebody who knows Steve has, or would be able to take, some snaps of the bits and pieces.
By the way, how much was recovered, just a few fragments or a sizable amount of the aircraft?
Tangmere, any snaps of the dig which you could possibly post here?
I’m sure I’m not the only one who would be interested in seeing how much and what sort of condition the retrieved parts were in.
Thanks for sharing that Graham. I have a picture of Glaser which I can send you. PM incoming.
Tim.
