I doubt that any of us know or are likely to get to know the economic rationale behind the move to St Mawgan. I just hope that it works out in the medium to long run.

On a selfish note, being only 70 miles away mean that I’ll get down there a few times a year, including the opening day on March 29 whereas I’ve only been to Coventry once several years ago – an enjoyable visit to the MAM.

I was working in Sheffield from 1973 (just) so it would have been May 73 at the earliest or between then and the Hastings being retired in 77.

Good news. Although living in Devon I’ll be on 10 days walking holiday in Derbyshire in late May so shall be able to make the Sunday 26th open day.

Having followed online the fantastic efforts of the LPG to re-erect the QRA sheds I really look forward to seeing them in the flesh (so to speak).

I recall driving from Sheffield where I was working to the Derwent Dam to see PA474 and a Hastings do several passes over the dam. Plus there may have been a Tornado or 2 but it was PA474 and the Hastings that have remained in my memory.

I left Sheffield in 1990.well before the 50th anniversary. Was there a 40th anniversary flight in March 1983?

If I remember correctly, it was claimed in the local paper that the particular Hastings was little older than PA474

    Another who was there.

I had my head down changing a film (thank heavens for digital cameras) when my son then aged 7 grabbed my arm and said that they’d crashed.

A few years later he came home from school and said that he’d seen an F117 flying over RAF Chivenor. I told him not to be so stupid but had to apologise later when the local rag published a picture of the said event.

Ah yes, I remember it well – the first of what must be approaching a thousand in the last 56 years.

A FROG F94 Starfire – 1/84th scale – in 1956. One of a number of Comet moulds of US aircraft that FROG leased or bought in around that time. Around 10 or so parts plus a tiny tube of cement. Took all of 10 minutes to assemble.

Bought for me by my grandmother whilst I was in hospital having my tonsils removed.

    Wellington bits

I visited Brooklands many years ago (possibly 20) shortly after the restoration of R Robert.

They were selling off scrap bits of the geodetic structure for (memory) c.£1. I’ve a 6 inch bit sitting on my model shelf.

On another tack, when Shuttleworth restored the LVG many years ago (possibly c.30) they sold off pieces of the replaced lozenge fabric, a piece of which I framed and is on the wall facing me.

    Very atmospheric pics.

Rail fares from Devon being so extortionate, I’ll be making one of my all too rare visits to Hendon next Wednesday afternoon. Also hope to drop into Hannants whilst in the area.

I hope that the GW Hangar will be open as advertised, unlike the last time I called in a couple of years ago!

The German Giants although not the book you’re remembering is well worth buying if the German R planes are of interest.

My copy – 2nd edition bought c.1970 – is printed on glossy paper which results in excellent reproductions of pics and line drawings. At 310 pages (inc. index) I’d happily pay around £40 plus for a copy in good condition if i hadn’t already got one.

Thanks for the info. Access to airframes is very much a bonus and I look forward to coming along whether or not any cockpits are open.

I’ll probably take pot luck and come over this Sunday or if not possible, later next week.

    Thanks again

    Open cockpits?

    Evening T O

I last visited Newark about 20 years ago before being exiled to Devon. We’re back in Derbyshire next week on holiday and a return visit to the museum is a definitely on the agenda.

Question – last time I recall visiting the interior of the Shack, Hastings and Vulcan for a small fee (? 50p per aircraft from memory). Are any of the aircraft still opened up to visitors, perhaps at weekends?

I’ve found the ‘Great War Forum’ very helpful in trying to interpret my ancestors medal index cards and service records.
