Sadly it’s not from a Phantom:confused: Looks more like a Buccaneer probe to me

    Extract from the listing –

‘THIS IS THE GENUINE REFULLING PROBE FROM AIRFRAME ‘XT914′ PHANTOM FGR2 OF RAF No 228 OCU/64 Sqn BASED AT RAF LEUCHARS UP TO RETIREMENT IN 1990.THE AIRFRAME WAS RETIRED AND DECOMMISSIONED AND SADLY BROKEN UP AT RAF WATTISHAM IN EARLY 1991 I HAVE HAD THIS PROBE IN MY COLLECTION SINCE THEN’

XT914 was last based at Wattisham, last served with 74Sqn and is still on the gate at RAF Brampton (complete with refuelling probe)

I checked out all three last weekend, they are all still there. ‘AJ’ was accessible if you were prepared to make the effort 😉

Leuchars was a gamble this year, some got in and out OK, others not so….. I parked in the Guardbridge (blue) park and ride, arriving just after 7.30, I was on the airfield for 8.30 after walking the last half mile when the bus got stuck in traffic in Leuchars village. I left the airfield 2.30 to avoid the rush only to find the carpark had become a swamp……

Weather picked up mid morning, the highlight for me was the reforming ceremony of 6Sqn with Typhoon along with the Tornado, Typhoon and Spitfire formation flypast. Also Leuchars is the only place you can see three complete RAF Phantoms, well worth the 700mlie round trip.

The last aircraft of the Jet Airaft Preservation Group was moved out of Long Marston yesterday Hunter T.7 N-315 ws loaded for its trip to Aberdeen. This is the last aircraft we were able to help. Lets hope someone can help the ones that are left We would like to thank Stewart and Tony for giving us the chance to save and keep this nice collection of aircraft together
(less the T.7 which we already had ) THANK YOU !!!!!

That will be why I spotted it heading north on the M6 last night, glad to hear it has found a new home.

Phantom AP’s list the aircraft as FG Mk. 1 and FGR Mk. 2 and the F700 as FG1 and FGR2, hope that helps;)

Official specifications and designations is something I have studied for a while, every AP or official document that I have appertaining to British service aircraft has a full stop between all the letters and the mark number at least once on it, though it is often shortened to just the one full stop between the letters and number in the main body of text. I will admit I have never seem Phantom documents though.
Is it possible that it became unfashionable to do away with using the full stops in latter paperwork?
Isn’t it also basic English, that if you shorten a word down (ie Modified Mod. Specification Spec. Mark Mk.) that you use a full stop, and that is basically what the role letters are.

C for cockpit and N for Nose section….?

Phantom Phil, in this list that you (presumably) have compiled, what do the bracketed C and N indicate?

Also, why have you noted them as FG.1 and FGR.2 in the wording, yet FG1 and FGR2 in the list? Which should it be?

I was with 1918Sqn (Ruthin) during the mid eighties, my log goes…..
Chipmunk WK624 and WK639 with 10AEF, WP914 with 6AEF, WP984 and WG308 with 7AEF and WP839 with 8AEF. Also VC10 XV102 and XV104 with 10Sqn. The ATC is a great way to get interested in aviation and go flying for free…!!!

Great thread this one, hope it keeps growing.
