The other thing posted is why did we not buy American instead, well if you go down that route, you lose the skills, designers and engineers to produce a home grown item in the future and suddenly become reliant on buying everything from other countries in the future as you have burnt your bridges, again not a good state of play to be in.
Well, they kept their jobs for a few more years, but they too will be gone now…
What is it with the Tory Party and Nimrod debacles???
As somebody who works at sea, I don’t feel that safe now, as they plan to severely cut back on Coastguard cover too, with only about 8 stations in the UK remaining 24 hrs. Add to the fact that they are cutting back on the CG coastguard chopper cover, it is all going to add up to a farce. Accidents don’t only happen during daylight….
Discovery Turbo had the Classic British Aircraft episode covering the Canberra and Nimrod, in which it states that a Nimrod can get to the furthest reaches of the UK SAR region in 4 hrs – would love to see a Herc do that, or loiter during an extended SAR mission. God forbid another Piper Alpha where Nimrod was pivotal to the SAR carried out then.
I get the feeling the Government have bitten more than they can chew, and will come to deeply regret this decision. Why waste the billions developing the MRA4 by not using it? Better than having to pay 200million to scrap them…
Press And Journal.
Didn’t see that in the P&J this morning Gateguard – mind you it might only be in the Moray Edition, as I get the Aberdeenshire Edition…
Sad about the scrapping and the demise of the Nimrods. I had my first ATC glider and Chipmunk flights at Kinloss, and also my first Summer camp. Wonderful area around it, and I’ve had a few weekends in Findhorn and the Kimberly there – fine place for an outside summer pint of real ale looking across the bay..
***** Edit ******
Found the article, but poked away at the side….. crazy how BAe get compensated, but Morayshire gets nothing….
Pensacola Museum
I was there in 1998 while on a weekend off from a course I was doing in Morgan City, LA. It was well worth the journey. The guy that took me had been the crew chief of the Bell Huey Cobra that hangs just inside the first display hall.
Unfortunately I did not have a digital camera at the time, only a point and shoot 35mm, if I can, I will look back and see if I can scan in some images – some of the stuff there was amazing, and I thoroughly recommend anybody who can to go and see it…
Scotty
Yes a good idea in principle – however ‘Listing’ brings with it a whole new set of ‘guidelines & permitted uses’ and no doubt costs! 🙁
I understand what you’ve said there TO, but I’d imagine a museum for aircraft would be pretty much the same sort use as an active base? – the difference being the aircraft aren’t as active (unless it’s a site like Duxford etc..) I’d suppose the buildings would be actually be used for the purpose they were designed for, the storage and maintenance of aircraft and associated systems. I suppose that the new guidelines would have to take in to account up to date HSE requirements, as well as the addition of visitor access and facilities….
It was just a thought, I realise you and others on the forum will know a lot more about it than I do..
Kind regards
Scotty
Possibly off on a whimsical tangent here, but what I find frustrating is that there are marvelous airfields like abandoned (by the services) and complete and looked after time-warp Upper Heyford with listed and protected buildings, in theory nothing can happen to some of these empty structures of which some areas are lying idle and empty. Imagine if the site got together with a major aircraft collection, both parties gain by in theory very low rent and being attractive to both airfield and aircraft enthusiasts, thus improving the income and protection of the site and collection.
Good idea….. what’s the point of listing a building only to not use it? It will require maintanence to the fabric which has no sense if the building is not occupied, as it will only deteriorate again. Might as well use them…
Um, a C-130 is a Herc is it not? Who cares is a journo misses out a dash, it was substantially correct, which is not too bad considering current state of the media….
Bit of a pointless post really….
Now the Nimrod MR.4 is cancelled…
…. I take it Woodford will be winding down now, and with it will this accelarate the demise of XM603?
Anybody know any more?
Kind regards,
Scotty
Agreed and a request:
I know it can be done, but I haven’t done any online research, but have you thought about creating your own 3D still images, which we can view if we wore the right glasses?
I would imagine that you’d need two identical cameras – which I think you have?
Just a suggestion.
Keep up the good work.
Slightly off topic…
Fuji and another manufacturer (can’t remember) do a 3D stills camera, there was a feature on BBC World News channel programme ‘Click’.
They cost about £400
Hope this helps
Scotty

The real cost 37,000 job losses 😡
Oh and the benefit system won’t help them, never mind the private sector will pick up all the slack.
Will be a lot more than that, especially if Lossie gets the bullet as well….
The three towns nearest the bases, Elgin, Forres and Lossiemouth heavily rely on the trade from base personnel. Add to the fact that quite a lot of the partners from the base personnel work in the local health service and council. Take them away and it totally devastates the area, not just for trade, but infrastructure.
I don’t know Cottesmore’s situation, but I’d imagine it won’t be too different.
For North East Scotland, there’s about another 7,500 job losses in non base personnel if both Lossie and Kinloss go, as well as a devastated local community structure. There’s very little else up there regards industry apart from whiskey, farming and fishing, none of which requires loads of people…
I can see this defence review being regretted in the future… What happens should the Falklands flare up again?? With a couple of the companies drilling down there hitting successful wells, and Argentina getting the support of other Latin American countries over the ‘theft’ of their natural resources, it might not be as far-fetched as you think….
Last one out switch off the lights…. 😡
This ‘the name Nimrod is undesireable now’ business and that is why it was cancelled is rubbish.
How about save them, and re-name them Shackleton II’s??? For the third time a ‘Shack’ can replace the Nimrod…..
hehehehehehehe:diablo:
You know that “joke” is only funny about the first 4000 times you hear it.
Call me touchy if you will, but does it really need to be added to every single thread on the forum?
Don’t see why not…..
Have a nice day!
Scotty
Surprising…
Surprised nobody has asked the age-old question…
…. when will it be at Legends???
Kind Regards,
Scotty
VM325 is at Carew Cheriton, and I think that would be the best bet…
There’s already a thread about this aircraft here:

Most of the failures on the Shackleton MR2’s were related to the retractable tailwheels failing to lock down, or the tailwheels actually coming off. The MR3 wasn’t much better in it’s early years with nosegear failures fairly common. I seem to recall reading the SAAF’s first Shackleton delivery ended with a nose gear failure.
Regards,
Rich
Mk 1’s were bad for the main gear collapsing, which resulted in a jury strut being required to avoid inadvertent collapse.
Scotty
Cockpit is starting to look cracking already Tony – hard to believe how quickly she is starting to look good….
Kind Regards,
Scotty
