    Jet pipes and other photos

These photos were taken in 2005, so things can only be worse now…

The photos of the wings spine, and fuselage show the holes in the skin, which must have allowed rainwater to fully penetrate the airframe, damaging all what is inside…. A shot of the spine, cockpit and bay exposed due to missing panels show that everything that can be removed has been, and what is left is in a poor state.

Jet pipes in less than desireable state, from what is visible beyond undergrowth.

Colour photos taken with Nikon D70 with 24-120mm lens
Black and white taken with Nikon F4, 19-35mm lens, T400CN film.

Worth looking in to then MJR…? I know Andy and other Lightning chaps said the biggest thing next to avpin is jetpipes for running a lightning.

Aren’t the jetpipes knackered as well? I am sure the lower one took a battering when it crashed into the ground when some theiving pikeys took the canopy and radome… I’ve been to see her circa 2005, and the top jet pipe didn’t look brilliant either…. will try and dig out photos….

Why dont the interested parties on here pool the funds and buy her??

Not meaning to be disrespectful, but what’s the difference between one party buying her, and a collective buying her? The airframe is goosed, has been exposed for too long and there is nothing left to recover. Even to restore, it’ll cost an arm and a leg as everything is missing! There are much more suitable airframes worthy of attention than this one.

Sad as it is, this one would be a step too far apart from somebody with a heap of Lightning parts, bottomless wallet and infinte time.

Better as saucepans now I’m afraid….

would the cockpit be salvageable then?

Good luck trying, but seeing as there is better examples of Lightning cockpits to be preserved, I think this would be totally economically unviable – there’s nothing left to salvage that could be useable, and to be honest is probably only worth something in scrap value.

It’s a sad end to a once proud aircraft, but I think this one is just too far gone to do anything with…

Im sure it’s worth more complete than just hacking off the cockpit?

The acreage of land the airframe sits on is probably worth more than the aircraft. The cockpit would provide a frame for a project I suppose, but it’s been sat there that long, and everything of value that can be taken has been, so reckon scrapping is all it is good for…

I’m surprised the wings have stayed attached as long as they have, given how they were reattached to the airframe…

First flight as a toddler was in an Air Anglia F27 Friendship between Dyce (Aberdeen) and Norwich…. circa late 73, early 74

…. memorable for my mother more than me as the gentleman behind me was wiggling his finger between the head rests to say hello and entertain me, but I repaid his kindness by biting his finger as hard as a toddler could….

    Ooops!

from what my father has told me, the engine that was removed has gone to dubai (not sure what for) The money that was gained from selling off the engine will go to getting the old girl looking and feeling a good bit better 🙂

since the engine being fitted is a 0 hour one its better for the old girl in the long run 🙂

    Edit: (from dad)

I’ve seen the use of a Shack Griffon for this purpose before on Discovery or National Geographic. If I recall it was testing the glass on the Al-Burj skyscraper, the highest in Dubai if I am not mistaken…

    Sink the Repluse?
Probably would be a hit in Germany.

probably be more of a hit in Japan, as they sunk Repulse and the PoW off of Malaya…:diablo:

I took that photo at Strathallan in early eighties.

I was at Strathallan in 1984, and KB976 looked brilliant. And then again, so did Comet XK655 and Shack VP293, for being outside airframes. Shame that museum folded… What would KB976 be doing now????;)

Best – Venture glider flight out of Kinloss over the surrounding area just prior to sunset. View over the Moray Firth and Findhorn bay outstanding. U2’s With or Without you was in the charts, and the intro to that song was going through my head the whole time. Permanently cemented into memory now… halcyon days…

Worst mmmm, tie for that one – Landing on the vessel CSO Alliance in a crowded Super Puma with 16 other pax in it – and I was nowhere near a door or a window, when the helideck unexpectedly came up to meet us as the boat pitched, and the helicopter was coming down. I think 20 pairs of under wear needed changing that day (pax, crew and deck HLO!)

    OR

Landing at Aberdeen Airport after a flight from London in an old BA 737-200 (that’s historic now, right??;) ) when upon a turbulent approach in severe crosswinds, the stbd wing dipped just before touchdown, and a one-wheel landing occured. As we hurtled down the runway, we were still going at some speed going past Bond Helicopters base .Being familiar with ABZ, I knew there wasn’t a lot of runway left for the speed we were doing… suffice to say we did stop in time, then on the taxi back the 1st officer came on the tannoy to explain that the captain was too busy to speak, but he’d like to apologise for the rough landing….

Was he too busy wiping his keks clean like the 80 or so passengers behind him?? heh heh heh! 😉

Those Mike Hall pics are fantastic, they were the images he let me use for my website before that went U/S.
He also covered the 77 – 78 shows. I still have the pics, but would infringe copywrite here.

Talking of the Nim sim, I spent some time in there, brilliantly analogue.
Some wag stuck a fly to the vertical scenery board, so that when the camera ‘flew’ over it the pilots were greeted by a giant blue bottle!
The main MR.2 sim was at Kinloss for a while, the one at SM becoming a currency and procedures trainer, for rear crew aswel as flight crew.
The old man will know what happened to it

I remember having a ‘flight’ in the Nimrod sim in 1987 as a young aircadet during annual camp. The large model of the St Mawgan area (IIRC) was amazing. Of course, when given a shot, it almost seemed obligatory to crash into the village…

… such was the folly of youth!

But you’re right Pagen, looking back in hindsight, it was brilliantly analogue!

    Kind Regards,
    Scotty

James, you silly b****r – come down from that ledge this instant. Do you think walking away will achieve anything?

Key has a problem, or rather we have a problem. Andy is one person. His value to Key Publishing – hold on – let’s find a recent copy – is £4.10 (the cover price of Flypast). No more. No less. Andy has been affected by this stupid saga of Key’s making, yet is Key concerned by the negative feedback posted on this forum? Nope!

Add a few dozen other concerned individuals and then compare that to the 30,000 plus readers of Flypast. That’s the problem. It’s a money making machine. Flypast is flawed. I’ve posted messages to that effect several times and have always been burnt by negative feedback.

Someone suggested that we picket Flypast’s stand at the next Duxford event. Fine. Super. This will no doubt result in Flypast complaining to the IWM, who in turn will ask the police to evict said campaigners from Duxford.

This is what I would do. Firstly, Andy should re-register under his own name, and start posting again. See what happens. Secondly if you feel that you or anyone else should leave this forum, then please promise also to stop buying Flypast and/or the other Key titles.

There is nothing to stop you or me from starting another forum. Check out what the Airfield Information Exchange (AIX) have done, though please promise not to censor (edit) other people’s messages or block forum members from replying to the criticism about them made by others. Once this new forum has been established then I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of people started to defect. More so if Key decided to pull the plug on it’s own forum.

I bet the forum doesn’t make as much money as a copy of Flypast.

If you want to hit Key where it hurts, then stop buying Flypast. Most of the news in there seems to be on forums first, and the rest is history, which we can research ourselves, or find in other forums or magazines / books/ videos.

A three month spell of plunging figures would make a difference to them I’d reckon.

    WR963 @ Coventry?

Either that or WR960 @ Manchester Air And Space…. Thought there was rumours of her being moved, possibly moved out? Would they have to partially dissemble to reposition her if needed? I think I’m off the mark, but who knows?
