    Yikes!!!

    £15,000!!!!

I think he has seriously over-valued this collection. Or am I mistaken? The size of collection may be rare, but I really can’t see him getting that in this economic climate…

To the original question asked, although I cannot answer this with any definite proof, it is possible the Soviet style markings are there for training purposes, perhaps masquerading as an aggressor for an exercise. I have a photo of an 8 Sqn Shackleton WL790 with a similar star marking being shadowed by a 41 Sqn Jaguar XZ114.

Due to not knowing who’s photo it is, I am reluctant to post in case I breach copyright.

    Hope this helps,
    Kind Regards,
    Scotty

Victor, Vulcan or Shackleton AEW leading.. after that the list is probably endless. Phantom, Lightning, Hunter, Canberra, Buccaneer, Javelin, Meteor, Vampire to name but a few.

Why not an MR Shack? They were used for longer and much more extensively than the AEW variant…

i know! i needed the link to show my dad, but what an achievement 24 hours and they built a servicable wellington bomber, that was delivered to its operational unit the same day they finished it

    just breathtaking!

I don’t think I’d be wanting to fly in something made that quick!! I don’t trust QC inspectors! Did the aircraft have a long life?

    At the moment.

There’s always the hope they will be granted independence and go away though, Taking Michael Martin and Gordon Brown with them. 😉

Cees post makes a lot of sense.

I cant get my head round anyone thinking that we only need one airworthy Lancaster. Do the same idiots think that the wonderful work done by ARCO and HFL is not required, as we allready have the BBMF Spitfires and Hurricanes? 😡

It’s up to you, but do you think everybody with an opinion different to yours is an idiot? It’s up to the Pantons what they do, but that sort of money, and the money required to keep it current, not to mention the insurance costs are a massive commitment. Not to mention the spares required to keep it airworthy. That’s why I have an opinion it is perhaps better to keep it on the ground. I’m not saying I’m right, but I resent the thinking behind your post.

IMHO why take the risk with such a rare aircraft? It’s not as though there are plenty of workshops restoring them such as Spits….

No BBMF Lanc at Duxford this weekends airshow.
and a few other events been missed also.

Having another Lanc could be a bonus when one goes Tech.
if you want to see one taxi, badger Duxford to get theres in a state to taxi .

Don’t know if it quite works like that – I’m no expert, but I am pretty sure, especially in the busy airshow season that you can’t just click your fingers to call up a replacement Lanc when one goes tech.

These aircraft are over 60 years old, it’ll be understandable if one can’t turn up to a show every once in a while.

Duxford is the IWM, and all the badgering in the world isn’t going to get them to get a Lanc to taxiable status if the funds aren’t there. To get that, the money from somewhere else has to be found. I’d rather see more preserved aircraft static, than a few taxiable ones. But that’s my opinion, and I am sure others have different ones.

Good luck to the Pantons whatever they do, but the money they spend to get Just Jane flying for a while could be spent to keep her taxiing even longer. I know I’m quite happy just to see her taxi. I’d rather see a Shack fly again, but that’s not going to happen..

    Cheers!

    Confirmed as G-REDU…

As somebody who has to take the odd journey in these things, I am relieved things worked so well. As I bet so are the crew and passengers….

    Indian scrap..

    Yup,
It would be safe to say many ships of British origin have taken their final voyage up the beach at Alang, Gudjarat, India….

I’ve seen many pictures / videos of practices in the area, and it’s frightening!

Well, having worked in an envoironment with asbestos before, I can guarantee it will be well controlled, and if the local enviornment gets a sniff of the asbestos from any of the ships they scrap at Greythorp, then they must be on site sniffing the stuff….

… Good luck to Able UK – it’s more work for british workers…. HSE will endevour to see they are well looked after, as they seem to poke their nose everywhere else…

I’d be surprised if he could get $1,500 for it…

Well, maybe a little more, but not much.

Well, if he thinks he can get $1.5m for it, why didn’t he put it to a more reputable auctioneer? How many people on eBay have a spare million or so to go shopping for data plates? More chance getting it in Southerby’s catalogue…..

There is two issues here… One if the future of Scampton, the other is the Future location of the Reds. I personally think the two kind of go hand in hand, in that as long as the Reds survive, then I think Scampton will survive.

If the Reds survive, Scampton will survive? No, that’s just not true. There are other airfields close by, all it would need is a hangar or two, and that’s going to be cheaper than keeping Scampton open. If Scampton is closed, doesn’t mean to say the airspace goes with it, so the Reds still have somewhere to practice.

Resmorroh and Pagen make excellent points, and unfortunately, I feel they are right. Farnbourgh, Tangmere, Upwood, etc, have all gone, and they were just as historic.

I am not saying I want Scampton to close, but the MOD are not in the business of preserving bases, they are in the business of defending our country, and I’d prefer they keep doing that.

I seriously doubt there is the money available privately to keep a base like Scampton open as a historic centre. I gather the whole argument to preserving Scampton as a complete expansion base would require all the buildings to be put to use. Can this be done? Would light industry take the buildings without modifications, which would be what the english heritage report would seem to prefer? Otherwise what is the point of preserving the buildings?

Not saying it is a done deal but looking to the real world is the best policy. Preserve what is essentially the most historic parts, and let the rest be developed. There’s no bottomless pit of money to preserve the whole lot.

    XG731 was a Sea Venom FAW22

You’re quite right….. I was thinking Vixen while typing, and the power of subliminal thought done the rest! 😮

    This Meteor is on Otterburn.

Tain is still an RAF range although the airfield is not used. There are lots of AFVs there but no aircraft AFAIK.

    Tain
Sea Vixen XG731 was scrapped and removed in early 1998. The airfield has been out of use for years, and I believe recently that extensive parts of the wartime site has been demolished.

    Remaining Aircraft Fates?

So what is the likely fate of the remaining aircraft?

Is there any interest in restoring any of the airframes, or is owner apathy or disinterest going to condemn them to a scrapyard fate. The Shack certainly looks as though its not long for this world. What happened to the 2 outer engines?

The exit of some of the aircraft is certainly very welcome news, at least some will survive.

    Kind regards,

    Scotty
