I love the Shack but considering the ammount of useage they had it would cost a fortune to do, and the EU rules would cripple it.

Same for Just Jane, I would figure there is the will and the money out there but the EU ruling would make costs prohibitive.

Yup, just the hard facts of life. I would also love to see it flying here, but the cost is just unrealistic, and there won’t be the same overall appeal like there is for (dare I say it?:diablo: ) the Vulcan.

As has been said before, at least the aircraft is going to be looked after now, and should the situation change, then perhaps flight in the future could be an option, although unlikely I would say.

It could be worse, she could have ended up like the two Pahphos Shacks. Weren’t they the best of the 8sqn bunch? – Now look at the state of them.

    😡 😡

    Interesting article…

… also interesting to note that the newspaper reckons a VC-10 is similar to a 707!

Well, I suppose they are both jet airliners, but that’s about it….:diablo:

often imitated, even now (Blue man falling anybody, american pilots who know it all, French-African soldiers decapitating prisoners….) I think the TV show was a best effort to capture a huge book, possibly ahead of its time in being almost “revisionist” in terms of depicting pilots as people, this is out on DVD now I think, certainly on Region one format – imagine what they could do today with this with CGI…. mind you, if it was CGI then you would know that ray hanna didn’t fly under that bridge it was all pixels, not the same is it?!

It’s been out on Region 2 DVD for some time now, either that or my DVD player has some mysterious features that weren’t advertised when I bought it!

I think I got mine in March this year……

    Scott,

It could just well be that VP293 is in fact homeless per se, spending it’s time lodging with various museums/groups around the country as the owner resides in the USA.

And/or it could [possibly] be helping with the restoration of the other Shack’ ?

Cheers for that, I was just wondering if anybody knew of why it was there, as I was under the impression it was resident at Norwich museum. Having said that, it seems to have done the rounds a wee bit in recent years.

As has been said by Pagen01, I do know the Mk1 / 3 cockpits were significantly different, so would be surprised if it was anything to do with the restoration of XF708. I’ve a few Mk2 cockpit bits and pieces here, and they are totally different from the Mk 3, notably the stick/yoke.

Good to see one is under cover though, and the other one is getting attention.

    Regards,
    Scotty 🙂

VP293 is here because it can be here.

Thanks for that very enlightened and informative reply

    Shack Cockpit

It is VP293 at Duxford, but why I don’t know….

As far as I know, the only 2 Mk 1 style cockpits left are VP293 and WG511, both of which were converted to T4’s. Unless somebody has been keeping something very secret and saved some of the scrappy stuff from Williamsons in Elgin. IIRC WB847 was to have been rumoured at one point to be going on the gate at Kinloss about 20+ years ago, but got cut up instead.

From what I remember of WG511, there would have to be a lot of demolition to get her out, either of the airframe or the building, but it’s 16yrs since I was last at Helston.

Anybody know the reason for VP293’s visit to Duxford?

    Scotty

While its true there are those who would disrespect his grave because of the nature of the weapon he dropped, there are many who feel the atomic raids actually prevented the loss of even more lives by stopping the need for an invasion of Japan.

A brave man who stood by the courage of his convictions,R.I.P. Col Tibbetts, you have bourne the weight of a burden few can begin to contemplate.

It is easy to condem a man’s actions were he believes he is doing the right thing, but how many would take his place to do the same?

    Hear Hear.

Was it not Winston Churchill that said “You don’t have to be nice in war, just right…’? (or something along those lines)

It’s a shame that a man who by following orders saved the lives of so much more people by ending the war early has effectively been denied a grave by those who might protest about nuclear weapons. Had it not been for the atomic bomb, these protesters might not have had that liberty to protest.

Prehaps Winston hit the nail on the head….

The same story all over the world, to the winner the spoils, who remembers the second person on the moon?:D

Actually that’s easy, but who remembers the poor third guy left behind in the orbiting module while Armstrong and Aldrin were out for a stroll? 😉

There is nothing which would prevent an insurance company from keeping the insurance fees at the level they were at before the required insurance sums were raised!!!

A very relevant point well made 🙂

What I want to know is why the local council got a US team in when there is a huge number of groups who would willingly recover the aircraft.

If its as good as the Beeb say:rolleyes: they should have it flying at next years Ledgends.:D

I might be talking out of a hole in my neck when I say this, but I am sure that the US military still claim possession of any ship or aircraft wreck (or part of). Therefore it might make sense in contacting them, the same way as permission has to be obtained for UK military aircraft digs.

Was this not the case with the F-14 fin that washed up in Ireland a wee while back?

As hinted at in the WIX thread – both stupid & Ironic – that the damn ‘E.U.’ wouldn’t even exsist without the outcome of what these very-same aircraft bought about in the 1st place

Tongue firmly in cheek when I say this, but the EU would have existed in a different form, with German masters….

…. sometimes its difficult not to think if Germany got her way in the end, given how the EU operates

Posting too late at night Moggy or need a new calculator, try £7440!

Or perhaps too early in the morning for some 😉 – I think Moggy is referring to one of the other items for sale, also at an inflated price ($2500).

I don’t think he’ll get his asking, but you never know, fools and their money are easy parted, and his country doesn’t have a shortage of either….!

A touch of Airbus Industrie perhaps?

It came to mind is this not a similar idea to the airbus construction?

Better make sure everybody is using the same revision of drawings and software or it will be a Siskin shaped and sized A380 saga!

    😀 😀

this idea continues on today recovering rare airframes and leaving them to rot
    1 W1048
    2the collection at long marston.
    3.concorde.
    .

I wouldn’t say anything at Long Marston is rare, and to be honest, I’d say the effort of recovering some of the airframes to display standard is not going to be worth it… Certainly I’d be scrapping the Shack before she turns into the Shack version of the Blackpool Vulcan.

If one of these IE neds who regularly feel the need to photograph the internals of this airframe hurt themselves and have the audacity to sue the owner, I think it is likely the scrapyard is going to be the most likely route…

Sorry if this is slightly off topic…
