Another Forum – pprune.org
Peter there is another well known forum pprune.org that has an absolutely superb thread running that would be a perfect destination for your ‘RAF Service’, thr thread is in the Military Aviation section and is titled
Gaining An R.A.F Pilots Brevet In WW II – started by ‘CLIFFNEMO’ back in 2008, currently has some 10400+ posts and the current gentleman in charge/senior poster is one ‘DANNY42C’
Could I respectfully suggest you check this thread out and consider posting your ‘RAF service’ there

Thanks for replies folks, should probably have said ‘offensive’ operations e.g. bombing; that’s why I poo poo’ed the claim in first place
Must admit I wasn’t aware of RAF Ansons at all in EA, though I suppose that in early ’50’s they were probably still on RAF books

Antarctic ‘Twotter’?
Antarctic ‘Twotter’? – is that an exhibit? or just a visitor?

RAF Liberator B VI bomb sights
As a slight thread drift, would the the Liberator B VI’s as used by 205 Group and in the Far East have had the Norden bomb sight?

From Imperial War Museum Collection
This image is apparently a painting of a 49 Squadron Lincoln with Mt Kenya in the background, by a ‘Pamela Drew’ and is in the Imperial War Museum Collection’

RAF + Mau Mau
Remember being told to make sure no ‘open fires’ at night just in case the RAF got enthusiastic!!!!
Britain’s Small Wars – http://www.britains-smallwars.com/ not a lot on it
Flypast did an article on 1340 Flight a few years back – sorry can’t find it now
My Dad was an ATCO at Eastleigh & then Wilson in ’54 & new Punch Bearcroft of the Police Air Wing
The Last Colonial Regiment – The History of The Kenya Regiment
has some BRIEF references to air ops against the Mau Mau

Excellent Museum
Was there at beginning of June
Entrance is FREE, but there are are charges for the following:
The Concorde(S),
DC-3 (C-47?)
Boeing 747 (100?)
about 7 Euro’s each
AS others have stated the info/cards are scarce, but the exhibits speak for themselves
As Museum is next to the Business Terminal, the whiff of burnt Kero/jet is quite evocative on touring the external exhibits
I used the on site bistro for an acceptable Plat du Jour (2 courses + drink & coffee) at 19 Euro’s
Remember plenty of film/disc space & battery life!!!

Air Gunners Association
Only hearsay I’m afraid
Understand they ‘Stood Down’ a few years back – there is/was an Air Gunners Museum at Elvington but unsure of present status
I do have an old contact from Stokesley area, I’ll try to pass your query to him

Douglas DC-7C N8216H (c/n 44927
Here’s a link to a DC-7C that was abandoned at OLD Port Sudan airport

I provided the original photo in 2006 (taken in 2004), understand that aircraft was finally broken up in 2007

Does anyone know of any good sites for photos of this historic airport especially showing the remains of wartime areas?
Appreciate you didn’t use the current name by PEEL Holdings!!!
My maternal G/father was a general Foreman when the place was built, and my maternal Uncle plus my Dad were on the first draft of RAF personnel
PZULBA – Out of Africa (retired) – sadly no photo’s of the ‘drome but do have one of de Gaulle inspecting troops (RAF) which was allegedly taken there
My father worked for Airwork at Usworth in 1952/53
Ditto
Dad worked there from I think 1950 to ’53, when they ran a Flying School for the RAF – Dad was paid off after a Government White Paper (yes they had them then!!!) led to the scheme closing down
Came across Airwork the airline in East Africa in late ’50’s/ early ’60’s, also I seem to remember they had people working for EA DCA – alongside IAL people
RE Oman, remember hearing rumours of skulduggery over ‘war bonus’ in Salalah in early ’70’s – along lines of incidents being ‘invented/reported’ to extend said bonus by another 90 days!!!
Also ran into someone in Khartoum in 2001 tilting for a Tech Training contract with Sudan Airways
PZULBA – Out of Africa
Between ’51 & ’53 various flights in Anson, Rapide & highly illegal trip in Chipmunk on Dads knee + & here memory is dodgy definetely taxiing in a Meteor T 6/7 possibly a flight???
Dad was RAuxAF ATCO (yes he knew the rules) & also ATCO at Usworth – Airwork run RAF Flying school
First regular passenger flight – BOAC DC4M Argonaut June ’54
LHR – Rome – Benghazi – Cairo – Khartoum – Entebbe – Nairobi
(RAF Eastleigh) – > 24 hours including some meals on ground
Worst flight was (upto last year) a Pelita (?) BN2 Islander with port engine failure on take off from Balikpappan, but July last year had dubious pleasure of a SudanAir An-24 flight – 2 days after they (SudanAir aka Inshallah Airways) had lost a B737-200, on which I should have been a Px on its ‘penultimate flight’
Still shaking!!!
😮 😮

Lost Delayed Luggage
LAST FIVE TRIPS through Frankfurt to Leeds Bradford & my luggage hasn’t made it
Follows on 12 – 24 hours later – covered in Security Stickers except of course XMAS Eve, when it was 48 hours late
Fortunately no Pressies inside, I’m slow but I do learn – that much so that in future I’ll be travelling Emirates to Manchester & their ‘limo’ to the door – Yes I’m lucky & travel Business Class!!!
So far no apologies, compensation or !!! – apparently BMI should handle as they do the last leg, but they don’t go out of their way despite the Diamond Club GOLD Card – though as I say the Prime fault is Lufthansa and Frankfurt
Digressing slightly!!!
On basis that much of original fleet of C130K’s (Mk1’s & 3’s) are being retired/sold off;
Are there any plans to preserve examples at Duxford/Cosford/Hendon?
Apart from the sterling work done by ALL the fleet over the years, there must be individual aircraft that have ‘noteworthy’ histories eg Falklands Ops and many other events
Sudan
Upto about 6 months ago, there was a very sick looking Provost in a ‘playground’ on the West Bank of the (Blue) Nile in Khartoum – also a MH Broussard – could still be there;
Will try for a photo, but some folks are sensitive about cameras!!!
😉
