“Would make a good name for a pub”

…or perhaps a Croatian footballer. He’d fit right in at Chelsea.

“just how far can a radio signal travel,?”

Radio waves travel outwards indefinitely at the speed of light. Which means that we are now literally, broadcasting our existence to anything within about 100 light years of us. At that distance you would hear the earliest radio broadcasts ever made – and you could theoretically home on in the signals, hearing radio and eventually TV broadcasts that were more and more up to date the closer you got.

As Tony T says – lets hope anyone listening isn’t hungry….

Actually, as dedicated Trekkies will know, one of the Voyager probes is indeed found by an alien civilization who build an incredible advanced spaceship around it and send it back on a mission that will accidentally destroy Earth, if the (by now rather elderly) crew of the Enterprise can’t save us first….

“I saw a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand – walking through the streets of Soho in the rain” ?

“Beware of the flowers cos I’m sure they’re gonna get you – yeah.” One of many from John Otway

And this one deserves to be quoted in full… from Donovan…

“She came, she came to meet a man, she found an angel
Goo goo, goo goo barabajagal was his name now
Goo goo, goo goo barabajagal was his name now
Goo goo, goo goo barabajagal was his name now

He very wise in the herbal lore’s got young cure now
She came, she came to free the pain with his wild flower

Goo goo, goo goo barabajagal was his name now
Goo goo, goo goo barabajagal was his name now
Goo goo, goo goo barabajagal was his name now
Goo goo, goo goo barabajagal was his name now

Fine fine, fine fine acelandine be prepared for her
Tea tea, tea tea to make her free while incense burned

In love pool eyes float feathers after the struggle
The hopes burst and shot joy all through the mind
Sorrow more distant than a star

Multicolor run down over your body
Then the liquid passing all into all
Love is hot, truth is molten

True true, true true the song he sang her while the leaves cooked
Ting ting, ting little bell he rang her, sleepily she looked
He filled, he filled a leather cup, holding her gaze
She took, she took a little sip while this song he sang

Goo goo, goo goo barabajagal was my name now
Goo goo, goo goo barabajagal was my name now
Goo goo, goo goo barabajagal was my name now

It really is worth trying Uswitch or a similar site to compare prices. Switching suppliers is actually very easy – and we’re currently paying about half what we were paying five years ago, despite all the price hikes since then. A lot of the new, small companies seem much more user-friendly too.

She was apparently taking part in a special kids activity called, quite seriously, “Bullets & Burgers”.
    Total madness.

Anyone from Doncaster here? Seems you could be a Scottish citizen by tomorrow morning…..

Just think: If if covers Robin Hood Airport too – then the Vulcan could be the first aircraft of the new Scottish Airforce.

What some people will do for 40 virgins.

Didn’t it used to be 72? Living standards must be falling in the afterlife too…

I wish DVLA would get with the times and offer monthly direct debit.

As of today – I believe they do. Don’t know how much interest they’ll sting you with for the privilege though.

I think I can see why all governments have kept the Road Tax the way it is![/QUOTE]

I have a couple of classic cars – not quite old enough to qualify for free road tax. For one in particular I pay the full whack of £230-odd road tax… for the privilege of covering a total of 500 miles last year!

And it goes on! “Falklandsgate” has become “Bellendgate” …. assuming you believe the Daily Pail….

Though I suppose it shows a certain self-awareness that they’d think “Bell ends” would be directly aimed at them..

I’m sorry for appearing to ‘raining on someone’s parade’ but, who paid for this exercise and what was the amount of the budget ?

Oddly enough I was just reading this link… http://www.vox.com/xpress/2014/11/12/7209487/comet-philae-cost

1.4 billion Euros – which works out at E3.50 per person across the EU. A ticket to see Interstellar at the cinema averages E8.50… so for once I’d say Europe’s welcome to the couple of quid it’s cost me personally…

Seemingly the harpoons didn’t work… and the lander “bounced” a number of times – finally landing on it’s side beneath a cliff – which could mean problems getting enough sunlight to recharge it’s batteries so it may only survive a few days. Though apparently if they do decide to drill – or even retract the landing legs, that could actually “bounce” the lander again – potentially putting it in a better position.

But even if it packs up in the next few hours – I would say it’s been an absolutely astonishing achievement anyway.

As to “what practical benefits can there be for the broad mass of mankind” ? At some time in the future one of things WILL be on a collision course for Earth…. that’s not a possibility – it’s a certainty. Finding out as much as possible about them now could give us the ability to literally save the planet.
Slim hope perhaps – but better than relying on Bruce Willis and Ben Afleck…
