Merlin – If you don’t already follow it, I’d suggest checking their Facebook page for more up-to-date info. You don’t have to sign up to Facebook to see what’s being posted. They do seem rather more active on some other forums too

The CIA also operated a few 727’s – or strictly speaking C-22’s -in Vietnam; dropping supplies and agents from the rear stairs.
As Mr. Cooper seemed to have a detailed knowledge of the speed and flap settings required to make his jump, at a time when civil airlines weren’t aware it was even possible, one theory is that he was an ex-Company man doing a bit of freelancing…
There were rumours elsewhere that she was going into a temporary Tiger Force paint scheme: but that seems to have been squashed.

Wasn’t at least one German pilot beaten to death by crowds? I recall the story as it being a pilot who’d bombed Buckingham Palace – but that just could just be the propaganda spin.
Edit – actually I think it was this one I was recalling:
“On 15 Sep 40 a Dornier Do17Z of 1 Staffel, Kampfgeschwader 76 was shot down over London, it crashed on Victoria Station after some of the crew baled out. Oberleutnant Robert Zehbe (born 9 Dec 1913 Kiel) landed by parachute in Kennington, London. He was captured and beaten to death by a mob of civilians”
Just realized that today is the 50th anniversary of the crash. Here’s to Donald… and to Bluebird reborn.
I too love the film – as a film. But I think it, or I suppose really the Tom Wolfe book it’s based on, is responsible for a lot of questionable perceptions that are now widely accepted: The deification of Yeager being the obvious one – but also fairly negative views of people like Crossfield, Gus Grissom and of course of Glenn himself – “Mr Dudley Dooright Clean-Marine”
I think the Kembs dam was attacked the previous month specifically with the aim of preventing the Germans using floodwater against advancing Allied forces. Perhaps there was similar thinking with the Sorpe?
think of a premier football stadium full and all on the first day…
Oddly it was a series of photos that emphasized the individuals lost rather than the mass of casualities that really struck me recently….

This forum is a free resource that, I would imagine, probably costs Key money as it is – so it’s totally understandable that they take no risks of running up legal costs, however spurious the challenge. I agree with Scotavia: challenge dodgy-looking items with an innocent-sounding question on the listing page.
There was a thread on here recently with a link to an amazing collection of wartime / early post war colour photos. Most of the aircraft pictured were dirty, oily, weather beaten, scruffy old beasts… and looked fabulous because of it; living, breathing, machines doing what they were made to do. My vote is for working landing lights before shiny paint every time…
