ALG
Thank you John..That told me. Any idea about the Lysander???
Listing Application
If anyone has or has a link to some History and good recent photo’s I have a friend who will apply for Grade 2 listing asap. That’s of course if nobody else has done so.
Those towers also served in the BOB. I am sure if enough of us support it we may save them for future generations…..
Chain Home
What was the reason for removing one in the first place? Also does anybody know the current use of the site? As for listing if it has not been it should be VERY SOON ! If I am correct the site is very close to the site of RFC Swingate.
I fear another bit of our History is about to be lost. How about a “Friends of The Chain Home Site” ?…..Just a thought
Selsey
Thank you… But that does not cover the early War years.
Lancaster JB221 OF-W
Took off at 00:30 from Bourne. Intended Target Frankfurt.
At least Nine other Aircraft were lost on that Raid. Most were Halifax 2’s
Three of the crew are buried at Durnbach War Cemetery One Officer and two Air Gunners. I hope that the other crew members remains will now be laid to rest.
A lot of Bomber Boy’s still lay in the remains of the Aircraft they left England in.
One day we may see a proper and fitting memorial to the 57,000 men of Bomber Command it is long overdue
And another Selsey Crash site
My Friend in Selsey has just sent me the following 2 images. The 3 items were given to him by another local. They are NOT from the Spitfire site but another site in the area. They were found by some Polish workers last weekend who are digging drains.
My best guess is they are Luftwaffe but what Aircraft. How many more sites like this are in the area?
Any information would of course be more than welcome……
Selsey
Has anybody written anything on Selsey ? I am just thinking it would make a nice little history….. Now if I get the time……
Selsey…
Thank you again… Does anybody know if Norton Field was in any sort of use during the BOB ? It was an ALG in 1944 but had been an Airfield during the 1930’s. I have attached a couple of photos to show it in now and then style.
I have most of the History but not in the early War years. It was known as RAF Selsey and appears as such on AM maps.
Selsey
Just as a matter of interest. Did a group get the Typhoon out of the mud or give up? I seem to remember press reorts about it at the time. I know the ALG at Selsey had a claim to fame as one of it’s Aircraft shot down a JU88 the first on D-Day He was a NZ Pilot.
Also has any attempt been made on the 1944 Spitfire in the area?
Thanks again……
Selsey
Is it totally impossible to be another Aircraft? Obviously I don’t think I can pin the date down exactly but from the evidence so far it points to 1940.
1974 I remember it well ! Oh well time to go through squadron records……
Selsey
I will attempt to get a photo of the site as well as a transcript of what the witnesses have said. I have just placed an Amazon order for your book…. Thank you for all your help on this one.
Having followed the thread on the Lancaster in Germany at least seven brave men may now get a decent burial and closure for the families concerned. Watching the film it looks very much like a community effort.
I just cannot understand the attitude of the MOD over here. I don’t wish to become political but is it cost?
Selsey Spitfire……
As to “The Bloke who wrote the book” You deserve a huge vote of thanks. Without your efforts many families would still not know what happened to their loved ones, neither would we have had the Tangmere museum.
Both your dedication and professional approach to the subject are appreciated.
I still have a nagging feeling about this Spitfire………
Selsey Spitfire Update….
I have just spoken to my contact in the area. He has just told me that the Farmer thinks the Engine is still in the ground. Could this explain the Oil? The person who farmed the land before him refused other people to look some years ago. (he has since died)
My friend also has offered to investigate further with ground radar (he is in that industry) Would that be illegal?
He may well find nothing but……..
You may be right but…….The two witnesses are sure this one “Dived into the ground at the rate of knots” To quote one of them. If I am correct Home Farm is where the ALG was. This one is closer to the Mud Flats, near the Church.
I am sure you are correct but it may just be worth finding out a bit more. Again thank you for your help
Selsey Spitfire
That sounds interesting… My only concern is that if it still contains any Human remains at the very least a memorial should be placed near the spot. In my experience West Sussex council are very keen on this sort of thing.
If the Pilot had “Hit the Silk” I think the aircraft would have been recovered by the RAF at the time or at least a paper trail would have existed.
As a matter of interest how many BOB period aircraft are still missing in the South East? Excluding those who went down in the Sea. I seem to remember one in Surrey nr Redhill …..
