    Missing Lancaster

Human remains have been found on the site. A few more names can now be removed from the Runnymeade Memorial. One day maybe the Bomber Boy’s will get a proper memorial it is long overdue. 57,000 died at least we can do is remember them.

    Selsey Spitfire ???

This get’s stranger by the day! The two witnesses are sure it was 1940. The land owner has a small part of a data plate that has -ch-Aeroplane Factory on it. My best guess is Castle Bromwich? I guess this points more and more to a Spitfire.

Can we totally rule out it being a BOB Aircraft? Also it would be interesting to get the date of the German A/C at Selsey (On the beach?)

I know it is very hard to remember what happened 70 years ago but both witnesses are adamant of the date. What is known of BOB losses in the area or coast? I am pretty sure that the ground is very muddy in the area. Is it just possible that this is a Machine that was reported as crashing in the sea?

Logic tells me that somebody would have known about this before now but who knows??

The photo appears at http://worldwar2airfields.fotopic.net/c1185379.html which puts it into perspective and also gives further information on the ALG

    Selsey Spitfire..

Thank you Andy. I have spoken to both local witnesses to the crash. Although one is in her 90’s she is 100% sure it was a Spitfire. The other one thinks maybe it was a Hurricane.
The first. A dear old Lady also said she remembers it well as a German Bomber crashed on the beach nr Selsey in the same sort of time.
I have not seen the site myself but a very good friend of mine has. The site is not far from the mud flats and a very small Church.

Is it possible that for some reason this one was missed? Or even reported as crashing in the Sea? Or even the wrong period ie on the build up to D-day?

Another local also remembers that in the early 1980’s several people were digging for a crashed a/c in the area. Was this the Typhoon? Any more information would be very helpful.

My main concern is if this is a crash site it would be illegal to interfere with it in any way. From the amount of alloy and other bits seen I am fairly certain it is an Aircraft but the identity is a mystery……..

    Selsey Spitfire. Follow up….

Following a late night phone call…According to the “Witness” at the time it was a Spitfire and was seen to dive into the ground “and disappear”. From the scant information I have this was in 1940. I know in 1944 an ALG was very close to the site. No mention of any recovery at the time has been made. Is this because of the very muddy ground in the area? I have posted a aerial photo taken in 1945.
