Having heard about it so much on here I’ve just finished ‘ fate is the hunter’ by Ernest k gann, excellent and really gives the flavour of the era, and kind of following the same vein have now started ‘ skyfaring’ by mark vanhoenacker.

Not penguin tipping but penguin tumbling, as part of HMS ENDURANCE flight much of our tasking when at s Georgia or other islands was lifting in/out survey teams, quite often when the cabs shut down on board the aircrew would tell us that the landing point was on a plateau/ hill and as they flared to the hover they would see the Penguins blown down the track they had just spent ages waddling up!
Nice pics DCW
I’m not sure on the retirement dates for the Lynx HMA.8 or the AH.9As but the Lynx AH.7 is being retired later this year. And Duxford already has one
Tim S
OSD for HMA MK8 is fixed for march 2017,the fleet has been reduced a lot already.
just finished DREADNOUGHT by robert k massie about the build up of the fleets of germany and britain prior to WW1, a fascinating read that mostly covers the drives and characters of those that made the decisions that led to the naval arms race, 900 pages so was a long read, next up CASTLES OF STEEL by the same author about the war at sea in WW1.
PADDINGTON,really good family film that i enjoyed as much as my kids.
‘flat earth news’ by nick davies, about modern media and all types of news sources, very sobering reading about how our news is produced.
oddly enough there was a repeat of ‘james mays cars of the people’ on bbc2 tonight at 7, in which he shoots at a 2cv and a renault 4 with a lee enfield no4,ak47 and a gpmg ( all 303″/7.62 mm), this is obviously subjective but most of the exit holes were round or oval but quite small, some were large and of many different shapes but a couple looked almost round and possibly bigger than 20mm so its probably to do with what else it has hit on its way though the target and the effect that has had on the round. many yrs ago when i was in trade training our PW sgt took us shooting with the good old L1A1 in which he shot a 25 ltr cooking oil can full of water, it shot up into the air and the back side had a hole you could stick yr head through.
they are not common outside of whoever does the overhaul as when they go duff the cyclic/collective has to be replaced, really annoying as its a switch thats duff but its us grubbers/blackies that have to cx the stick or lever and not the greenies:mad:
now reading ‘wimpy’ by steve bond, about the wellington bomber, may have to drop hints for more a/c specific books for christmas.
no,all politicians will tarnish, rubbish and defame the opposition, its all part of their charm
i have recently read a number of ROALD DAHL books to my kids, they loved them and so did i as i dont remember reading them as a kid (too busy with aircraft stuff then)
just finished ‘hack attack’ about the news of the world hacking, just started ‘iron curtain’ by anne applebaum after which will be ‘savage continent’ as described by by john green then ‘wimpy’ about the wellington.
it comes as a GREAT surprise to me that J BOYLE and SNAFU would agree on ANYTHING given what i’ve read on here in the last couple of yrs.
there is listed 2 “baka suicide bombs”, do they mean the “ohka” as i thought baka was a derogative name for it.
