    I’m amazed no one has been sent out with a brush and a big bucket of white paint! How much does one of those cost at list price?
    When is the next free delivery slot ? Going to cost a few £,$ or whatever in late delivery charges.

    No. Aircraft like the RC-135 and a host of other land- and air-based platforms are used to gather ELINT and SIGINT.

    I accept that but they are/were restricted to a stand off role in the event of conflict, effectively line of sight, I believe.

    Erm… how do you get the signal back without broadcasting location?

    I’m sure that they have developed secure, covert, encrypted, burst mode communications similar to that used by special operations assets when “in country”,

    There are no doubt numerous reasons why its a good idea to keep them up. All just as important as each other.

    Except at Benbecula ( Machrihanish) on BEA Herons when blinds down was deriguer (sp) Cant say if it still applied when the Heralds took over.

    Please forgive my ignorance… 😮 ‘Zaps’?

    Unauthorised stickers or painted motifs often attached to military aircraft visiting an airfield by the home based units. A form of intellectual graffiti if you like.
    It can get a bit extreme. I believe a Jaguar on a squadron exchange in Germany (WEST) collected an Iron cross and german style serial number. I saw a B52 once wearing a 617 tail fin badge.
    They can also take the form of mission counts or “kills” real or simulated on an excercise. Though the real ones i.e combat tend to be permanent, witness USAF Phantoms in Europe still wearing Vietnam era Mig kills.
    I’m sure you get the idea.

    XL319 was zapped by the confederate air force while out there…. in the same place as the montage above. (and yeah, it does look like a bucc.)

    I believe a Phantom was zapped by the staff at the place that doesn’t exist, when subject of a tech emergency. I believe the crew also had a very intense debrief before being allowed to return to nellis.
