😮 Wow 😮 Once again very interesting photos tbzz. The old Il-14 is cool!
I enclose two F-14 shots, capted from a Tu-16 Badger tail window.
I read from some mag that for Bear/Badger crews that were intercepted by VF-84 over the Mediterranean, they gave a nick to this USN group : Yankee Pirates (in view of the Skull & CrossBones)!
Well, I have read from mags & users on the AK-47 that after this weapon is buried in the sand for some time, you could literally just recover it from the sand and fire..no problemo.
But if the Iraqis (of pre-OIF) felt that MiGs (or even Sukhois) could be applied likwise, you know recover it from the sand and fly the jet…..errr….I think that’s really pushing it! 😀
IMO, seems like the US soldiers there have turned Indiana Jones!
Not sure has this clip been attached before, but attached here for those who hasn’t seen it before.
It contains shots of the Hind cockpits & 4-ship Hinds of the Polish Air Force in some interesting aerobatic stunts.
Well, a frontal shop of 4-ship Hind is pretty menacing!
I think sferrin meant Israel handing the tech to China NOT Europe giving it to China.
Oops! My interpretation mistake, my apologies.
Allow me to rephrase that, no matter who handle the F-35 whether in production phrase etc. Let’s hope nothing (esp where some components of the F-35 have ‘civilian’ application) ends up in China where perhaps 2-4 years down the road (after any transfer to the Chinese), one may see pics of a Chengdu or Shenyang J-35 (chinese F-35) on some website.
Yeah that’s gonna happen. Two years later they’d be cranking them out in China.
Well, it is not that the Europeans are not reliable partners (in defence eqpt) but I agree with sferrin on this one.
Perhaps after another 2 years of these ‘transfer’ to China, I bet pics of either a Chengdu or Shenyang J-35 will appear on some Chinese Defence Forum. :dev2:
JC. Why is it people always reach for the “it must be photoshopped”? People DO actually know how to take pictures you know. If you want to check though you’re welcome to talk to the USN who took the picture.

I apologise if I offended you sferrin. It is not that I’m implying that you’re lying but it’s just that when I saw the pic, I was like ‘Wow! That is close. Or was sferrin dumped by someone who passed him the pic?’
I had originally shared the same opinion as expressed by JFrazier (that the Tomcat is probably at a lower altitude than the Viper), but due to my limited camera & tech skills as compared to some of the readers here, this ‘height difference’ was not obvious to me.
Here ya go. I’ll admit I can’t recall many others myself. Actually come to think of it I’ve seen one in a book with an Eagle and a Tomcat in formation in a 45 degree or so climb.
Sorry for sorry this but it seems like the Tomcat is PSed into the pic! Wouldn’t the ‘PlayBoy’ Tomcat be scorched by the exhaust of the Viper given the close proximity of the 2?!
Woah…thanks Canpark. 🙂
I suspect this pilot might be North Korean, the DPRK sent many pilots to fly VietNamese jets during the war and performed very well from what I’ve heard.
Hmmm….North Korean? Well Canpark, it never occured to me of this possibility besides the Soviet pilot scenario.
If its North Korean, now that would be interesting wouldn’t it? 😮 Possible for you to share about where you read/heard about “the DPRK sent many pilots to fly VietNamese jets during the war and performed very well..” ?
I don’t think he was real, but the pilot who engaged Cunningham and Driscoll was no doubt one of the better flyers in the VPAF at the time. I imagine the guy they engaged was likely an ace, but I doubt his name will ever be revealed.
I have the book ‘MiG-17 and MiG-19 units of the Vietnam War’ and it didn’t reveal anything on the ‘true identity’ of this pilot ‘COL Tomb’. Anyway, there is wild speculation that if this pilot does exists, wouldn’t Hanoi then would have exploited this chap for propaganda purposes?
Now, this begs the next question, if this fictitious pilot is not identified by the Vietnamese, I always wondered, what happens if this ‘COL Tomb’ is a Soviet (‘volunteered’?) pilot? Of course, it is in Hanoi’s (& possibly Soviet) interest not to identify this ‘ace’ pilot wouldn’t it?
Comments anyone?
December 22, 1969 (¿brief Christmas ceasefire?). ¿Hanoi? North Vietnamiese “exhibition”. Rare colour photo.
Regards from Spain.
Great pics STRATOSAURUS!
The MiG-17 serialed ‘3020’ was it the same jet that was flown by the fictitious North Vietnamese Ace – ‘Col Tomb’ & was supposedly shot down by Randy Cunningham on 10 May 1972?
The plane in the background is not a Phantom, it’s A RJAF Casa C-101 light attack aircraft…
It isn´t Phantom but Jordanian C-101
…then what’s the Iraqi MiG-29 doing in Jordan (or vice versa)? Some Air Show in Jordan?
…Although the Sea Dart was to be armed it never was due to wieght restrictions and the project was cancelled before it could…
One for the purists I think 😉 .Regards,
John.
Well, I just managed to find this clip Submarine-launched F-15 in metacafe & perhaps this one applies too?
……..btw it is for entertainment only!
…Seeing that you have got experience of both the Mig-29 and the US hardware, would you please write some facts proving the Mig-29 maintenance is a nightmare. Thanks
I’m afraid I can’t provide that (esp on the experience on the MiG-29, but I would love to!).
What I gathered that the MiG-29 is a maintenace-nightmare was reports from the maintenance experience of the MiG-29 in Luftwaffe/Polish/Indian service and from military mags that the MiG-29 is a pretty maintenance-heavy aircraft.
Thus, I apologise I can’t share my ‘experiences’ on the MiG here..
No more
I believe the Czech Rep. retired their Frogfoots…

Thanks for the replies Iranian F-14A & Minotaurus2004, with that it seems there is no Frogfoots now in any NATO AF, isn’t it? 🙁
