Can a certain prop blade only be fitted to one type of aircraft, ie could this blade in theory have been fitted to another type of aircraft?
DR.942 and DS.942 blades used two types of adaptor rings. RA.8952 which was exclusive to Merlin engined Wellingtons and RA.5812 which was used on almost anything you could dangle a Merlin off of.
In theory, if it’s got a RA.5812 adaptor, you could fit it to a large number of hubs…whether that’s a good idea I’ll leave up to you.
Anne
The 30mm ADEN Cannon is an adaption of the MG-213C.
Anne
Mastermind, don’t tell me – ‘Anoraks from Fourteen Fifty to Nineteen Ninety-Nine’. 🙂
Mark
Ahh…So you saw it.:D
Don’t know how this ended up in Oz. 109 Sqdn are the only folk to use them operationally, (6 months in all) so what happened to them after July 1942 is a bit of a mystery.
Any Wimpy (no..not the burgers) experts out there?
Anne
You need to go on Mastermind
Paul
Been there, done that…but as a question setter, not a contestant. Anyway I’d need a crib sheet which I think is against the rules.
Anne
Now that IS a rare beast.
DR.942 blade used on Rotol R1/4B5/1 Propellers fitted to the Merlin 60 powered Wellington VI.
Yup, a four bladed, merlin engined, pressurized Wellington with only 63 production models produced.
Do you have any hens teeth in that store?
Anne
DB.1140 blades used on…
RS5/25 propellers fitted to the Whitley V and with R7/35/54 or R7/35/56 propellers used on the Halifax II.
The prefix DB identifies them as Weybridge (Airscew Co. Ltd.) blades with an armoured leading edge.
Anne.
There certainly was a Wapiti Fuselage at Hendon some years ago : it was near the Southampton IIRC.
Not a Wapiti but a Wallace and still on show.
Anne.
And the contenders are…
RA10112 or 3, Halifax
RA10115 or 6, Spitfire IX
RA10117, Oxford
RA10118, Buckingham
Not sure if that helps at all…
Anne
Just a thought.
Have you considered lowering your sights slightly and just making a small(ish) part, like the rudder, of what ever aircraft takes your fancy? That way you can test out your wood, metal, fabric, doping and painting skills on an item that is manageable in terms of budget and time. If by making this component you then decide that the rest of the aircraft is out of your budget or skill level you’ll still have a nice object to hang on your wall.
As I say…just a thought…maybe not a good one.
Anne
Go on…make a Grebe. No more complex and a lot smaller than an Avro 504N.
I believe they are dummy ones, scaled on a replica from hendon i believe
Replica!…from Hendon!!?…’Tisk’
Anne (who has had a few more units of a very nice Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon than she should have)
Hello Ali.
I’ve sent you a Private Message with an ID.
Anne
I guess she’ll be back with the RAF Museum Reserve Collection at Stafford form whence she came.
Anne.
Did someone call?
What you’ve got there is a Vickers Viking blade. There is however a deHavilland connection as the original Rotol list I’ve taken this info from records this blade as having been made to ‘D.H. Planform & Thickness’.
I’ll go and crawl back into my hole now…good trick if you can do it!
Anne
Thanks for that TT.
I suspect that we’re looking at the remains of a 47 Squadron machine here as they were based in Khartoum while flying IIIFs.
Anne.
Mark – there are Fairey IIIF remains in the U.K so maybe a little more to add to the pot!
Interesting…who has those?
Anne
