One small point, the RAF do not own the Museum at Cosford.

It’s looks very much like the back end of an old clock housed in a square wooden or Bakalite (?!) box which you wind up and attach to your TR.9. It provides the timing for the pulse for the IFF signal which was every half second…or was it every two seconds…I can never remember.

Anyone able to fill in the gaps that I’ve forgotten?

Eek… I’m always a bit scared of sticking my head up in a Spitfire thread due to all the experts out there and the fact that Spits aren’t really my thing but here it goes. Be gentile with me.

Two points that I’m not sure of.

External differences between the MkI and V were things like the oil cooler under the port wing: semi-circular on the MkI, circular on the MkV; slightly more tapered spinner on the MkV; slightly more pronounced bulged canopy on the MkV.

True if it’s fitted with a Rotol unit but as far as I know Baders Va was fitted with DeHavilland 5/39 prop that used the same spinner as the standard Mk. I aircraft.

Coffman starter bulge (s’bd engine cowling)!

I’ve been looking at a number of pictures of Mk. Vs and can’t see any bulge on them while it’s rather clear on Mk. II aircraft. I also can’t find any mention of it in the Mk. V manual although I may not be looking in the right place.

Please correct me if I’m wrong.

See if you can get your hands on Osprey publishings ‘On Silver Wings’ by Owen Thetford & Alex Lumsden. It’s a wonderful book on inter war RAF fighters with lots of photos and some drawings taken from APs. If you can’t find that see if you can find the Dec 1990, Jan 1991 editions of the magazine that can’t be named (Aer*plane Monthly) where the articles which went on to become the book were first published.

I’d love to join you chaps but I’m going to be next door to Cosford spaying my mates with paintballs while looking for the Vampire that’s supposed to be on the site somewhere.

It’s amazing how fantastically ugly some fleet spotters of the 20s’ were!

Do the people who did the paint job on TB863 know something I don’t, (quite likely s’pose) or did they just get it wrong?

    S’pose they know something I didn’t

    Thanks

    Just a thought.

If you look at the photo of Dazs’ TB863, for some reason it’s got C type roundels on it’s upper wing while the war time shot shows the more usual B type. Do the people who did the paint job on TB863 know something I don’t, (quite likely s’pose) or did they just get it wrong?

Yup the Vikings sound barrier antics was a good’un. How could you go wrong with a display team with two F-104s’. Does anyone remember the CAF CF-104 display team which flew a four ship during the 70s & 80s. Didn’t need any coloured smoke nonsense…they produced their own dark brown version and the noise…!

One of my favourite memories of the very wet 87 Binbrook show was the stalls. Gordon the Gofer was the in thing with the kids that year and every stall had infestations of the furry glove puppets. A couple of stalls had lines them suspended from their necks and it looked for all the world like there had been a mass cull of the things. I’m sure it reduced some kids to tears.

One of the most entertaining displays I’ve seen was given by a SAR Wessex at the Leauchars 111 Sqdn 75th anniversary families day.

Scenario…Wessex zooms very low along the crowd line knocking over a chap on a bike. Down comes the Winchman with stretcher, checks the bloke and signals for the Wessex to come closer. The Wessex shakes it’s head (you know what I mean) and refuses to come any closer. Winchman shakes his fist, walks over to the dangling winch line and pulls the Wessex towards the casualty and then instead of saving the bloke he puts the bike on the stretcher is winched up and the Wessex disappears off stage left. Made what is usually a rather boring part of your average flying display much more entertaining.

Just remembered it’s called the Greyhound. Rather appropriate as it’s on Greyhound Hill.
