As far as some posters view …

We are no good for 4 or 4++ or 5th gen. So we stick with 2/3/3++ generation planes which we can maintain and put kits together. We will build next generation planes when we get certificate from some experts. Till then

I am not doing mine is bigger then yours. It is a healthy discussion on my part. There is no perfect world but we try to live with what we have.

regarding Su-35S, every new product needs time to establish and mature, at least I know it. Surprised to hear that Su-35S is costly, I was expecting Su-30 +- 10%.

Why Su-30M2 are dirt cheap? I wasn’t aware that there are many(in fact any) airframes in the storage.

Even Su-27SM3 are newer build frame (as per wiki)

This has been answered like a dozen times.

The RuAF is ordering models from all plants – Knaaz, Napo, IAPO. This is both support for critical enterprises, and allows for faster introduction of badly needed airframes.
Some of the orders (the already delivered Su-27SM3 and Su-30M2) were from left over kits from export orders anyways.

The planes are all domestic, so its not like the RuAF is suffering from diversified foreign supply chain, like say India.
The radars are all from NIIP, the engines are Saturn and Saluyt.
Quite frankly I don’t see the big deal, even if I’d rather see some models get priority over others.

    We will see …

    Listen up.
First of all, we must have a common undserstanding about cost related with Chain of support service.

What is the alternative of fielding Su-27SM3, Su-30M2, Su-35S out from KNAAZ,
    and Su-30SM out from IRKUT?
Hell i could just throw in the Su-34 out from NAPO as well.
They all share to Flanker support Chain.

There are some difference in Radars, EW and comunication system, we are talking about N001**, BARS and Irbis-E. Not that of a big deal. The Older Legacy Flanker are being retired as we speak.

If we disregard the complicated systems, the rest is pretty much the same, even Engines.

If you think this is bad, hell just look at other major AF like US, China, IAF.. How many different jets and systems do they Field?
I’d say the VVS has the lesser cost due to similar type of Inventory.

Shows your ability to reply to someone questions when those questions are associated with point of view and experience (IAF). If you don’t want to answer, it is fine with me.

On seconds thoughts .. why don’t RuAf order only Su-35S from KNAAZ, instead of older models? It is ok to order Su-30SM out from IRKUT and Su-34 from NAPO as well. This way you are already down to 3 from current 5 variants.

I don’t know how it could improve supply chain ? May be RuAF has special procedures which can makes 15 or more different type and their variants to manage no big deal?
It is not only about Flanker. Each type has a special variant and each variant must be having certified equipments, components and ground crew. You can’t just convert A to B or vice verse.

It will required bigger inventory -> more space -> more specialised staff -> more management -> more money -> end result (less efficient and more expensive).

And what about avionics, radars, EW etc etc.

Once again, can anyone answer these questions – Thanks

    Logic behind so many variants?
When they have the budget to buy newer planes then why not consolidate to fewer types?

How in heck RuAF is going to keep so many variants in the air and manage ground support equipment, inventory and maintenance crew??

Honestly, I don’t foresee 200 PAKFA in the air by Dec, 2020. But on other side if RuAF can manage to keep so many beasts in air (anything more then 50% availability) then anything is possible. To be clear, I don’t doubt the Russian industrial capabilities, but want to know the logic behind so many variants. When they have the budget to buy newer planes then why not consolidate to fewer types?

My personal views….I hope NaMo comes to power and end this circus. Currently we don’t have any PM or DefM.

I agree that content of Russian hardware is falling quite fast and I will dip further down but for it Russia has to accept its share of problems, corruption and lagging behind in technology. You can’t expect to others to pay premium price and offer half solution without after support. When customer complains then you shout at the customer that it is your people who are incompetent and don’t know how to handle equipment. Sorry… it can’t work any more.

There is nothing to be emotional regarding it. I am putting my views on the topic we are discussing.

It is irrelevant for India, if Russia develop it alone (like now) or with China. It also does not matter for us if China gets 2 or 3 fifth generation planes.

We have limited money and would like to spend it wisely to get reasonable outcome of it.

I don’t see all three working together on any military project in near future.

Of course Russia is free to choose China as their partner for PAK-FA. We sincerely wish them all the best and congratulate them on a successful JV. I am sure Russia will get more resources, capabilities and respect for IP then from India.

Why would India commit $30b for 144 planes, if the technology is way beyond our capabilities? It make sense for us to sit and let Russian develop it without any Indian money and risk. Does it make sense to commit $5.5b right know to get only 4 prototypes?

Like suggested, we should sign a consultancy contract for AMCA for $1-2b with Russia. Just in case we fail with AMCA and they successfully develop PAK-FA (with China as partners) then we will be happy to pay $150m per plane as screw driver Tot for 200 in stead of 144 planes.

JSR … it is not only hard cash but there are lots of other resources also paid by India. Yes, it is very expensive deal but there is no way we even think to sell it.

I guess Dassault playing tough is good for India in long run. It created few complication for India in short term, like screwed IAF plans. But it is forcing IAF and DRDO/HAL to work closely. Which I am sure will produce positive results in long term. I am awaiting eagerly for LCA-IOC-2, first Astra test fire (although it will take long before induction but still first baby step … very important milestones).

Nirbhay’s first test already done. Flight was aborted as it deviated from the flight path. Basic tests OK, bug is already discovered and fixed.

    Second test in coming month(s).
