heres another source, written well before ACIG in “92 (therefore proving the event was not a “cooperism”

Squadrons Su-25 in action No. 129 makes this reference: “By 1980 the soviets had come to realise that the afghanistan war was not going to be over quickly…….As a result, the two T-8 Prototypes were flown to kabul in April of 1980, replacing a number of Yak-38 Forgers which had proved to be totally unsuited to the CAS role.” (P. 5)

True, it’s definately an outdated bomber and the PRC is quickly retiring them from all but support roles. If it hasn’t been retired from bombing roles already. But experiences in Afghanistan in the 1980s have shown that a tailgun is an incredibly effective countermeasure against MANPADs…

    Hiya

Indeed so! The draaf Il-28s proved verry effective, despite its age, and some served into the 90s! due to its simplicity. it is claimed that none were lost to aircombat! (though a few to rocket attacks) While i cant verify, there are a heck of alot of them still left around!

    What period you speak about?!
I spoke about Dec 79 till Aug 88 or Feb 89, when the last Russian forces left Afghanistan.

    =

While not direct during the Soviet invasion, the subsaquent aftermath of the collapsing najibulliah regieme.

    😉

in regards to yak-38, while im not sure eitherway myself, the soviets used the afghan conflict to test various war materials like the t-8s, it woudl not suprise me if these were run out of Shindand also. the base was aparently purged of afghan personal for a peroid early on in the war, and the area was suited for small test missions againt hazara or tajik mujahadeen who were smaller and lesser equipped, yet at the same time it does strike me as odd, so i dunno 😎

    What air-war at all?!
The Russian airpower supported the government forces and own ground forces there, which tried to surpress local forces. Civil-war.
No fighters with CGI, no dense SAM-network to face, but the situation was more close to the situation in Checheniya.

While not direct during the Soviet invasion, the subsaquent aftermath of the collapsing najibulliah regieme..resulted in alot of the soviet aid deliviered, ‘walking’ over to various factions, predominatly dostum, but also former muja’ commanders. as a result there was aircombat between Rabbini govt and dostum, then moreso in the chaos ensuing. during this time there was airwar in the context you put it: alot of air to air action, as well as SAM use, not just stingers, but SA-2, Sa-3, SA-9, SA-13. most of the major instalations still had sam networks setup from their previous occupiers aswell.

ACIG published several interesting articles on the air operations over Afghanistan in the period 1979-2001:

grumble, grumble, dont let me get started on those :diablo:

to sum up the airwar form the Draaf side: ditched the mig-17s, scaledback the su-7s, il-28s proved suprisingly usefull, Fitter family bore the brunt of modern combat over afghan skies, mig-21s went so hot, but MiG–21PFs ended up surviving the lot of them! LOL

someone else will have to do hinds and hips, not my particular area 😉 if u want soem more info, i can provide 🙂

L-39 is of interest…DRAAF wing markings and Dostum Tail markings…and a unique camo! interestingly this could be the missing piece of the 3rd L-39 dostum was running……or one from the south 😀

Just recently I was eyewitness of a sudden strike of a formation of Hammer-bombers against a variety (smileys for everybody who can identify particular aircraft) of combat aircraft of squadron 1/72 on the apron of AFB Box. the result was devastating: the whole strike force was destroyed, no aircraft remained operational. The whole operation was named “Operation Clean Out My Room” and resulted in the non-recyclable loss of several 100 grams of polycarbonate structures. I just managed to take a photo.

well schorsch, after seeing that i think its safe to say ur employment oppunities at AMARC may be a tad diminished! :p 😀

    hehe, nice ‘former’ collection, i spy a su-24 fencer!!!! 😀 😀

eh, have another 🙂 yes this is a known shot, but the first where we get a clear view of the tail markings (usualyl obstructed by the hinds tail!) and a nice resolution.

btw if things go well, russias hoping on supplying 29s to the afghan airforce in some years time aparently!

MigMan could you provide us with more information? How many have been delivered and when? Thanks!

    HIya!

basically, as part of russias long term aid deal, in November 2005 2 L-39s were delivered to kabul, aparently 2 more hinds were also sent, i MIGHT have pics of (edit: Ha! there on the linked page too!). The pic of the L-39 is from before it was in afghanistan i believe. interestingly the L-39s ware wearing dostums triangle, unlike the new Antonovs, which wear a (possibly unintentional, though it seems someone is ass’ing up the markings!) reversed 1960s triangle.

incase it wassnt seen on the su-7 thread:
