Thanks All,
As I understand it then, the Army have had delivered 2/3 new CASTOR Islanders with the radar nose. One wonders whether they are a stop gap measure until ASTOR comes on line?
Special thanks to Steve Rush for the photos (all I have to do now is find out which colour grey they have been painted).

Hi all,
Fantastic thread and heartbreaking. I was at Gutersloh 80 to 83, there were very strong rumours of a large pit of scrapped WW2 Luftwaffe aircraft situated at the rear of the 4 Sqn HAS site. It had been partly uncovered by the contractors when they built the HASs and rapidly back filled again! The Goering Room with the bending beams in the Officer’s Mess proudly displayed a pair of aircraft machine guns on the wall above the stairs that were again rumoured to come from this location. I was posted back to Waddo in 83 to 86 and watched helplessly as the derelict Vulcans were JCB’d on Charlie dispersal, I used to go out in the Rover on nights to go and have a look see how many were left, very sad times. I did manage to rescue a couple of triangular panels from behind the cockpit of a Hunter on the Cottesmore dump for the East Mids T’Bird in the mid nineties though.

Many Thanks
Many thanks Annerorac for providing me with some amazing gen on the AEW Wimpey. It would appear from the report that you sent me that with a little more development we could have had the first workable Air Controlled Interception system in history, yet again the British boffins proved to be the best in the world but short sightedness threw away a lead in technology.
What might have been ………
Thanks again

Just to put my 2 penny worth in after reading this thread. Ref organising Airshows, I have had some experience of this in the past and can fully understand the work and pre-planning that goes into one and the inability to move dates because of the G8 summit. For example some of the things that have to be done are; arranging airspace reservations with AUS, publishing NOTAMs, ACNs, Insurance of the public and participants, booking & paying participants (de-conflicting with other Airshows around the UK), programme and ticket printing, crowd control, PA systems, CAA approval of display lines and Airside safety, disaster plan rehearsals, fire & crash crew facilities & cover, arranging police traffic control, emergency vehicle RVPs, press, advance ticket sales, advertising, ticket fee collecting, car park attendants, litter & FOD collection, portaloos, etc, etc. Imagine one person arranging all that and more and then…… having to change it all to another weekend! It ain’t going to happen I’m afraid. Good luck with your other events this year EF, you deserve medals for holding more than one “Display” per year in my book.
Well Done
