Coincidentally I’ve just finished re-reading “Night Fighter” (by Rawnsley and Wright), where the use of airborne radar to counter the threat of He 111 launched V1’s is briefly mentioned.

One comment made in the book is that the controllers found life difficult when the Wellington carrying the radar had to change course mid-interception – they had to re-calculate all the course headings and instructions they gave their fighters to allow for the Wellingtons new compass bearing. Presumably in those pre-computerisation days there was no way of “fixing” the PPI (plan position indicator) display such that it was independent of the heading of the radar carrier. Thus if the Wellington changed course by 180 degrees the PPI display would swing through 180 degrees too, thus reversing all the relative bearings on the display screen.

For anyone unfamiliar with the book, “Jimmy” Rawnsley was one of the pioneer RAF AI-operators who learnt the trade as the whoel area of AI-nightfighting was developed, he crewed with John Cunningham for two tours, one on Blenheims/Beaufighters, and then a second tour on Mosquitoes. Highly recommended.

fantastic book must have one of the first that i read as a kid..

Gunners Moon by John Busby is another good read and gives a great insight on life as a ground crew and subsequently as a gunner .

One should mention that the moderation in the general discussion forum is far more severe than it is in the Modern Military aviation forum. The spat that occured in this thread is childs play compared to what seems to be required to get a thread locked in Modern Military Aviation.

well holy god…we actually agree on something!!! strange but true!! 😀

Perhaps I’m not the devil’s advocate everyone else here seems to be. Until I hear of someone I know or God forbid, I, myself get an order to destroy a house that we know has civilians in it or otherwise purposely kill a civilian I’m going to simply ignore your charges on this. We might as well drop that portion of the discussion now because it won’t go any further…..

    .

PII just watched part of a very interesting prog on SAT TV ..and it reminded me of something you said on this tread..

some soldiers who objected to what they were being told to do in the name of freedom in Iraq went across the border to Canada for refuge.

What would you do if you were given an order that you found morally reprehensible? if you refuse an order surely you could be shot for “cowardice”?

so dont you think it is a good idea to get as much info from as many different sources as poss before deciding the rights & wrongs of a situation?

America is surely the richest nation on Earth. Why, they have bathrooms everywhere – at gas stations, in bars and even on airliners…

If I fly with a US airline, should I take my soap, towel and plastic duck?

    Bri :diablo:

well if you travel by road through Germany , Switzerland or Austria you will find fantastic facilities at their motor way stops as well …showers, remarkably clean toilets (quite often with attendants present even at 3 in the morning! ) good resturants, internet access…and the crack can be unreal no matter what the hour!!

dont think you will get O’Leary’s Ryanair to install anything more than a hole in the floor …if you are lucky!!! 😉

Yep we could all learn a lot from our European & American cousins!!
