[QUOTE] Now
In one of the most mysterious event’s of the war, a Junker’s Ju-88-1 flew from Christianland in Norway to Aberdeen in Scotland-and was escorted in by RAF Spifire’s. The Crew defected and the pilot, Heinrich Schmitt, is widely believed to have been a British agent.
An odd form of clandestine operation gave the RAF a present of the Radar itself. A lufftwaffe Junkers Ju 88R-1 nightfighter crew defected, and flew to Dyce(now Aberdeen airport), What make’s it clandestine is that RAF Supermarine Spitfire’s were alerted to go out and not shoot the Ju 88 down but to escort it in.
One day the full story may be told of what was obviously a preplanned operation.
Comment’s please!
would make one ‘ell of a film…now all we need is a flyable JU88…. and Tom Cruise!!
Seriously though thanks for the update 262 ..Fascinating !!!
[QUOTE=Tony Kearns..but then was the repatriation and or preferential treatment given to Allied combatants and where poss their aircraft officially and completely recorded ?
Yes everything was recorded.
Do the records go to the extent of who ate what with whom?
Are you being facetious?
Facetious ???
sorry for being soo cheeky !!!!
simply asking a question as someone who doesnt know the extent or accuracy of the records that were kept …or isnt that allowed ?
Was that a repeat?
I seem to remember seeing something similar before.
West Malling? Hornchurch?
Moggy
Hornchurch i think…has it been built over to an extent and some of it now a park area?
they found quite a few small pillbox installations,a larger one ,an E shaped dispersal, and two apparent AA sites one with compass points set in concrete…in one of the pill boxes they turned up what i think was the remains of a first aid kit as well as one half of some ’30’s goggles !
one of the guys had a strong Scottish accent and long hair if that helps!
“not in my world it isnt,…..Who decided on the name change?”
I do believe us Brits decided on the name change when we colonised the place. We changed it to Burma.
Pink gin? Good lord no, Bombat sapphire old boy. If you would rather have london dry do check up on your Hogarth.
The Name Burma covered areas incorporated by the British into the country at the time of occupation in addition to the original Myanmar or Bama .
The name ” Myanmar ” is not really representative of the present population of Burma .
Bombat Sapphire?…dont drink as a rule myself ..only when medical needs come into it … 😀 Genuine Austrian Snaps is a great sleep inducer though 🙂

OH NO…THE US GOVERNMENT DOESN’T RECOGNISE THE NAME…THAT OBVIOUSLY MEANS IT CAN’T BE THE REAL NAME THEN!!!
Some people make me laugh…we sit here moaning about the US invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan then say “Why don’t they do something about MYANMAR???”
” something ” doesnt mean invasion , occupation and war….Who even mentioned invasion?
Why would the Western or for that matter other Asian governments WANT to interfere with a government that looks after big business soo well?
The people didnt have any say in the name it was decided by the tyrannical military junta who decided on the change …the same junta that has moved the capital spending billions that could help the starving and oppressed.
The non acceptance of the name by the US government doesnt really have much relevance..what would be useful would be trade sanctions .

The “demand” and reply that the Luftwaffe crew be interned incident is recorded in the Daily Report Journal (DRJ) of the Fighter Squadron which had just moved from Rineanna (Shannon Airport). There is no mention of breakfast together. I do prefer not to rely on anecdotes which can often be embellished with the onset of time

Very possibly…but then was the repatriation and or preferential treatment given to Allied combatants and where poss their aircraft officially and completely recorded ? Do the records go to the extent of who ate what with whom?
Churchill didnt seem to know much about it !! 😀
mind you it is perfectly possible that this was just a way to make good story even better !!
archaeological question;
anyone watch ” two men and a trench ” last night? Dig on WW2 airfield? Park in charge of Fighter command in 1940 ? various bit s and pieces found including a buried AA emplacement
Yes, Radarman, you are right in one sense about the leg in the mangled wreck etc etc. However….the local knowledge pointed to his leg being found in a field near the wreck, presumably having fallen free after Bader left it behind. However, I am confident that the leg was NOT retrieved from the wreck. It couldnt have been. Had it been in that aeroplane then it would have been smashed to bits and not with just the bent foot that the Luftwaffe kindly repaired for him! Baders Spitfire is still there. Somewhere! Andy Saunders…..ps not sure if I am glad that this thread is back or not. Still…it could be something to do now these evenings are getting shorter!!! Mental note to self: get a life!
might have been dealt with already…but…Was the escape from the hospital and his subsequent game of hide and seek with the bayonet in the hayrick fiction or fact ? how soon after he ‘ arrived ‘ did it happen ? Was this after the drop of his spare leg by the RAF ?
Yes, we should never have let them have their country back. You can’t even rely on the electricity supply to keep your fridge going nowadays – totally messes up the Gin and Tonic when the ice cubes won’t stay frozen.
gin? pink or otherwise? :diablo:
