Actually that would be Dave Tallichet’s B-17G masquerading as “Memphis Belle”. The original airframe is far from flyable!

…and the oil splattered on the engine cowling is just there for realism!!!!! 😀

Cant agree with this …we can at least try…now i am far from being a GReen or a tree hugger i like my car far too much!!

BUT we can all do at least a little bit to help after all we dont get a second chance or for that matter a second planet ( at least not yet!! ) and you can save some money when you are at it!!

Personally i am fed up with being at the behest of GW and his profit greedy buddies in the Oil industry….So i am installing a wood chip/pellet boiler to replace the oil fired central heating system..now its dear to install over here in this RIPOFF Republic but am going to give it a go..its running costs are roughly HALF that of Oil or Gas .

I have also invested in a ” Greencone” waste system that takes all the food waste from the house and turns it into goo thats good for the plantlife!!! And it gets rid of paying for the waste bin service( privately owned and very expensive!) anything that cant go into it will go to he local recycling centre.

Wish i had known about termal heating when renovating the house a few years ago…..FREE HEAT !!!

there are loads of options out there go look for them!!!

Anyway thats just some of it…hit the ruddy oil barons where it hurts …In the pocket…and at least try to help poor old mother earth….she is pretty sick and needs a hand!! 🙁

    Scouse,

not too often that i agree with anyone or anything ( BEING A :dev2: !!!! ) that comes from Liverpool but reckon you have it spot on…they need to emphasise the youth of those who die in a war….you only have to walk amongst some of those grey stone markers, as i did last weekend, to feel the utter waste…most of those who died where younger than some of the ” kids ” i work with…

So show it as it was , not some glorified crap from the good ole US of A ,pick some younger actors but people who can treat the role with the seriousness it deserves…let it be seen that its the kids who go out and show fortitude and courage beyond their years.. and its the kids who die as well..

this newer version cannot and will not replace the original….there will never be another Gibson like Richard Todd’s or Redgrave’s Wallace …but if it brings the courage seen in the face of oblivion, the need to stand up for what you KNOW is a just cause , if it brings this to the fore…shows it to a younger audience, then great i hope it works…

but PLEASE no placenta eating twit !!! 😡 would have used stronger and more discriptive word but big brother wont allow!!!!

She was planned to do 35 knots with a range of 8000 miles at 19 knots. Supplies for 7 to 8 weeks with a crew of 1720 + 317 aircraft technical personnel.

    Ali

scary if she had been around in ’39 or ’40 but still reckon if she had stuck her nose out after that you could have been doing a sea water dive somewhere off the Norwegian coast!!! 🙂

PS why are ships, aircraft and cars always female???

Hurrifan, I reckon JDK has pretty well summed up the military thinking (or lack of it) behind the lack of direction behind the Graf Zeppelin project.
I suspect that if she had been completed and then attempted a break-out into the Atlantic then she’d have been given the Tirpitz treatment, bottled up in a fiord and then disabled/sunk by a combination of midget subs and 617 squadron.
The prospect of the GZ out roaming the Atlantic in 1941/42 (supposing her complement of aircaft was ready) is a rather spinechilling one, though. But again I suspect she would eventually have fallen prey to a determined Royal Navy (and US Navy from 1942) hunt.

    William

Agreed !!! cant see how she could have survived without a fleet of destroyers, cruisers and battleships to protect her from the RN.

Reckon that after the losses of Narvik ,Graf spey & Bismark can you imagine Hitler taking the risk with the Graf Z ?

Mind you if she had been available in ’39 or ’40……109T’s against Fulmers, Skuas and Swordfish…..EEK !!!

    Is it the Graf Z?

Have come across a few blog sites where doubts have been expressed as to the i.d of this wreak definately being the Graf Zeppelin but i havent been able to find out anything more recently than the initial discovery report.

    Has anyone heard anything ?

In addition i wonder if anyone has thoughts on whether the Graf could have been a success? she was i understand going to be pretty fast with a large air complement and poss considerable range.

What would have been her most effective use or role?and could she have survived ?

    Not quite on tread but…..

There was an excellant programme on RTE Radio last night, only got the last 10 mins or so damn it! during this prog a retired IAC officer mentioned that late in the war a very new model JU88 arrived at Gormanstown airfield , the captain didnt want his a/c falling into the hands of the Allies. apparently a Sterling landed the next day and the two crews shared a meal in the mess!!!

From the description it sounded like a Met flight or poss night fighter …Wonder what happened to it?

Again on the same programme another ex IAC type mentioned that they exchanged a ” Super ” Hurricane ( IIc ? ) which had ended up in Ireland for a load of older models…

Nice to imagine the JU in IAC markings !! 🙂

I have heard a story of a radial engined plane being picked up as a stray from over the coast of France and escorted back by 453 Squadron Spitfires.During the landing run the radial engined plane began firing, shooting down one of the helpless Spits.Have heard reports it was either a P47,Brewster Buffalo or a Curtis.Does someone have any info on was it a friendly fire accident or an enemy intrusion.

At the time of the first appearance of the FW190 didnt the RAF think they were ex French Curtis fighters? Didnt the LUftwaffe operate them as fighters ?

There is an interesting piece in one of the combat reports on the inside of the cover of Airfields of the eighth which mentions a strange B-17 which followed the formation of bombers before turning back towards germany.

Remeber reading this somewhere but as usual cant remember where!!

Wasnt there something about an RAF bomber being spotted as well? Halifax i think but not sure?

The project woudn’t have got anywhere without one in the first place. What makes you think there isn’t one?

Or should I say, is it necessary that they meet YOUR expectations rather than those required by the HLF and other bodies?

I really am quite fed up by this kind of thing. We hear it time after time, yet I still see the project progressing as of this moment in time.

Granted maybe there WAS a business plan in place ….but a viable or realistic one??? doubt it….
