Ali – David and I could suggest a Flypast Lonely Hearts Column – think you’d be snapped up! 🙂
A girl…..that likes aeroplanes……cripes!
TT
not that rare ye know!!!! My better half wont let me near ” IL-2 forgotten battles” that SHE bought me for Xmas !!! mind you she is more into modern stuff than i would like!!!
Is this another story about a body of water so there must be a plane at the bottom of it? Do you have any more details? Number? Date of loss? etc. etc. etc.
Ali
Unfortunatly my childhood was in a part of Ireland that at that time wasnt conducive to exploration or hunting down local folklore!!!! It is ,as previously advised ,a story that was going around but i do seem to remember it coming up again on a news /local affairs prog in the 80’s i think!
I am relatively inexperienced at this form of investigation,my only effort was many years ago when i heard ” stories” about a plane load of VIP’s crashing into a mountain range near the border . this ” story ” turned out to be relatively true in that AL 577 did crash and there were a lot of casualties..This was one bit of local legand that turned out to be more than local fairy tales!
As someone who has virtually no knowledge about how to for instance look up wartime crash reports, check for casulity lists etc I find this forum very educational but bow to those of you who have been at it a long time! keep up the good work!
Brill series and very well made..wonder what happened to the outtakes from all the rest of those great 50’s , 60’s and 70’s films..prob dumped along with all the aircraft!
Ooh – tell us more Hurrifan….
again its from my long distance childhood! But i remeber stories of a Spit down in the resevior .I think there was something on TV news back in the 80’s about a search for it…thats all i am afraid! will try some of the lads over here ..all the web searching has been inspirational !!!
Beware its a big and deep bit of water! 🙁
The Hood has been found. There was an article and TV prog on it a few years back.
Was on again recently ..didnt the same team find Bismark as well?
What about a dive on the legandary spitfire that is meant to be in the Silent valley Resevior in Northern Ireland???? will even offer B & B if it helps !!!!!
There is W6075 a Sunderland III 330 Sqn that ditched off Rams Island Loch Neagh 12 May 43. I have that accident report and movement card too. I also have the details of T2128 a Blenheim IV of 236 Sqn that Ditched on Lough Neagh 4mls SE of Randalstown 20 Sep 41 with the loss of the entire crew during torpedo training. The remains were recovered so it’s not a war grave but as the entire crew were killed it’s probably really banged up. Tiger Moth N9127 ditched in Lough Neagh 17 May 43. For a more modern touch there was an Avid Speedwing Mk 4 G-BUFV ditched in the Lough on 10th June 2005.
Ali 😎
Many thanks for the info .Did a bit more digging last night ,looks like it may be the Blenheim . Think dive was made by Army/Navy/Marines (?) sometime in the past 8/10 years and they found a twin but were unable to i/d type. When they returned to site unable to locate wreak again!
Many many many years ago when i was a kid I heard about an aircraft which was only visable at certain times in Lough Neagh. This resulted in a quite a few reports to aldergrove ATC about a ditched aircraft!!!
A friend heard from someone at an Airshow in Northern Ireland a few years back that a dive had taken place ,the aircraft had been found but then lost again ! anyone know anything about this? Think it must have been based or visiting either Langford Lodge or RAF Nutts Corner ..dont think there was any flying boat activity on the lough.
Wasnt the decision influenced by the rareity of the aircraft in that it was a gen bf109 and they didnt want to risk losing a veteran airacraft with a known combat history?
can i ask what your opinions are on the ” restoration ” of aircraft where all that might be used is for instance part of a spar. The result is then claimed as a genuine example using the original i/d.I am thinking in particular of a P51 from a number of years ago in the States where i seem to remember that the original had crashed and been totally destroyed .

What is the difference between a scrapyard and a museum… and visa-versa?
thats like saying whats the difference between a old peoples home and a morgue….
Unfortunately in the last few years it has become evident here in Ireland that there have been several cases where old peoples homes havent been much better than morgues for the poor devils living there !!
Thanks for the feedback on the Henley dig folks ..could be interesting!
We had a case here a while back where some guy was clearing his back garden and come across the fuselage frames of some Hawker byplanes that had served with the IAAC in the 30’s & 40’s….imagine that ….not exactly fairies at the bottom of the garden but ruddy heck 😮 !
Kenley dump.
Have come across a referall on another forum to a proposed excavation of the aircraft dump at Henley..Anyone know anything about this?
Inspirational
Yes a sad end to the trail all too often repeated as the years pass. But can i say well done to everyone involved .Truely you are all be congratulated on your dedication in an era of self interest .
I guess also with a larger and more capable air arm the Irish Republic could also take part in international peacekeeping etc if they so wished.
???? Irish Defence forces not involved in Peace keeping?? Congo /Lebenon/Sinai/Cyprus/Somalia/Liberia/Bosnia/Kosovo/East timor…etc etc etc and this has been going on since the early 60’s..plus dozens of smaller detachments world wide as we speak.
Beggorah and begade sire……Seems the Irish spend more time sorting out the mess left by former colonists than we do getting Drunk in the pub!!!! isnt that right now RonOO…. LOL !
what I meant was the local Irish pub has more fights that every other bar in town put together – seems to a drunk Paddy the world is his enemy
feeble attempt at humor
feeble is a mild word for it!!!!!
ask the Germans about the friendly soccer fans they have had to put up with over the last few weeks !!!! think we can hold our beer better than most and still spot an Sa 341 at 5 miles!!!!
Visited IWMN last Saturday found it interesting but it isnt what i would describe as a museum as such. Its more of an opportunity to listen and learn about REAL life experiences ,to see how war and conflict effected the ordinary Joe/Josephine Soap .
Yes there are some historically interesting artifacts and displays but it isnt a Duxford or
even on the scale of the now displaced Ulster Aviation society museam (formerly at Langford lodge..hopefully somewhere else very very soon!!! )
So dont go there folks to see the metal rather listen to how War effects flesh and blood.
On a slightly different issue we also visited the Manchester science and industry museum and i was disappointed to note that many of the fine exibits there were coated in dust and dirt. Otherwise it is a fine display .
Undefended skies
Damn good idea, low cost, simple but efficient ..i like it! and something we in the smaller countries need…
What “High intensity combat” is Ireland going to get involved in?! Really……Lets keep this within the relm of possibility!
Never heard of 9/11 ?? what happens if we here in ROI find ourselves with a hijacked airliner heading in towards Dublin,Cork,Limerick ,etc? at the moment we are dependant on the RAF in such situations..What happens if they have half-a-dozen airliners to check out themselves?
” high intensity”…maybe not but we certainly need to be able to do something for ourselves…let’s not find ourselves in the situation the Irish Army were in during the late sixties/early seventies…Tow ropes to be carried by all transport ..where available !
Preparation in advance is better than recriminations after the event!
