I started this thread and there has been some very interesting answers to the question from a few points of view. But after reading a number of reports my question is if most of our officers are not armed why do the government not provide them with the equipment to deal with incidents like this ? I.E vests that will stop a bullet ? Is it a case of bugets on the vests and and the cheapest wins ? For me we as a country waste too much money on things that are daft and don’t address the real issues.

They didn’t have any A340’s then ? We are talking the mid 90’s here with the B767-300 i think ?
Off the top of my head i think it operated out of MAN doing mainly the MCO run. Again off the top of my head it was only there for two summer season.
In a word no. An a/c of that size would get in and out of LBA no problem. The problem is the amount of fuel it would need to get to New York. With all that fuel on the a/c would weigh too much and would need to much rwy to get airbourne from LBA.
If u look at the closest star to us in the sky ( god knows which one it is ? ) The light you see has taken over 7 years to get here ! At over 180000 miles per second the speed of light, our nearest star is quite some way off ?

L1011 Tristar x2
B747SP
B757-200
Gulfstream 3
B727
Correct me if im wrong it’s only off the top of my haed.
