Thanks Bert, Lamps. I used a photo as a model in this one. It was the first vector illustration software I had used. One can only use lines and shapes so it gives a different look than a “paint” program. If you put the photo I used and the graphic side by side it looks like I just cropped the image. Doesn’t always produce positive comments. Its like having an outline of the Mona Lisa and then having to fill in the rest yourself. I still do a little hand sketching but mostly work from photos of models or actual aircraft now. Thanks again for your comments.
First class as always M. I like those P51 profiles.
First class looking replica Frank. I see there is a site now that takes your photos and places them into a scene and produces a large size print. The ones I’ve seen looked pretty good. Kind of brought the aircraft to life.
Great RC’s Glenn and very nicely presented.
Mixtec, just a hobby. Always been interested in aviation, got interested in graphics a couple of years ago so I combined the two. Sorry to say no art in my background. I am a member of CGtalk, but I hadn’t seen military-meshes. I’ll check that one out. Thanks for the heads up Mixtec.
A couple of hours of work and 5 minutes to paint, I’m impressed. 3D opens up so many new options. Some of the 3D work around is unbelievable. I don’t think I would have the patience for doing it though. Hope you post more as you complete it Mixtec.
Looks OK for a quick and dirty. How many hours does it take to get that far Mixtec?
Thanks Laviticus, Hopefully, AJ, Andy Mac. Sorry to be so late in getting back. Its been a busy month.
Thanks Shadow, Deano, AJ, XN, SystemM. Sorry I’ve been absent of late. Xn, sorry I’ve just sent you a message.
Hi System M, surprising where we do roam at times.
I’d like to say that all the projects turn out well, but sometimes the only spot for them is the trash can.
Thanks all for the comments.
Mixtec, the program I used was XaraX1. It’s a 2D program. This was the first aircraft I’ve done with a vector drawing program. Usually I use a bitmap paint program. I used a photo model to get the general outline of this aircraft, as I was interested in spending the time learning the program. Just like brush and canvas artists aviation model outlines are often used for accuracy and time saving. Once you’ve sketched the shape all the colours, shading, markings and rounding out are done by hand just like with a paint brush. It takes me about 35 hours to create one aircraft on a simple background. Here’s the nose of the aircraft with a few layers pulled apart for a better look. Thanks for your comments.

Andy Mac, you might try these two sites. I believe both artists do box tops.

Cheers, Gray.
This one did come out looking a bit photo like. I won’t tell you how many layers it took to produce this aircraft, I’ll just say many. They’re enjoyable to create though.

You may want to look at the Xara Xtreme. I believe it saves in a format that can be opened with Adobe Illustrator.
Thats a terrific job you’ve done so far Ep. Thats got to be a lot of hours of work. Your Grandfather should be very happy when he gets that. Are you going to do any prints from it? Hope to see the work when you complete it.
