I stand by my comment about the P-51 being overrated. I have the same opinion about the Spitfire….both good airplanes that has been elevated to “the 2 best fighters in the world” Apparently we would all be talking German or Japanese now without them.
I am well aware of the fighting record of both of them..and I have talked to P-51 pilots, veterans and private owners alike. Funny part is….most private owners has only good things to say…e.g. it won the war..perfect handling plane etc etc.
Talk to the veterans and get past the initial “it was a great fighter, made us able to fight the germans over their own soil and escort the bomber guys all the way” kind of comments….I quickly got 2 of them (at the same time) talking about how it would stall suddenly in a dogfight, how they had seen friends “go in” on take-offs, and suddenly spin out of control..probably because they forgot to switch fuel tanks mid way across the channel. Yeah..it really sounds like a GREAT plane with no vices doesn’t it??

Overrated…but still good. As in alot of other instances…right place at the right time…

I’ve been told that it was partly because a white painted cylinder looks bigger than if painted in a darker color. This is supposed to be soothing to passengers…the “tube” not looking so small and all that.

The elevators on the MD-80 series are not powered, but rather of the servo tab variety. This means that they are free to flap with the wind on the ground, and are moved in flight by the servo tab increasing or decreasing the lift on that surface..moving the elevator up or down and again controlling the aircraft.

The control checks on the MD-80 series elevators apparently needs to be done at a minimun taxi speed of 10-15kts.

Westjet flies in here regularly actually. I think I saw a check-in counter with their logo on it. Will ask around and figure it out.
And yes…my job is pretty good, and the location is fantastic…but I still can’t wait to get out of here. Getting island fever or something!!

    I’m afraid so!
They have started some of the expansion on the departure side of RWY09.
According to the chief of airport security they are well on their way with planning. Only waiting for money and the terminal to get finished.

On another note is the rather stupid case of a woman…English I think…that sued the airport for allowing her to stand by the fence and get burned by exhaust!!! There are large signs posted that blast may cause injury, but she still won the case…and the airport have to increase security measures at the beach after this.
I have heard rumours from closing it off (unlikely) to posting some security guy down there to make sure people are not hanging on to the fence.
Wouldn’t that be a sweet job for some of you….getting paid to stay there!!
