out of intrerest, how long had 452 and 458 been sat about before they were rescued?
452 was left untill around 1990/91 before she was brought back to health, 458 I think was was about 1998ish so there was alot of work to do on her.
It was around the time that 452 was sold to Mike Beechyhead and stripped for transport to South Africa
Looks like the late great Baz Livesley in picture number 8 Andy.
Yeh, like markp451 said above thats the great Baz Livesly on the wing, what a true Lightning man he was, and a real nice chap the boot, what he didnt know about Lightnings.
I will always remember his answer for a jammed shut starter air valve, ‘boil it it owt boy’ Classic.
Cheers
Last time we got to see a Lightning do anything other than rot in the rain was at the Classic Jet Airshow in the late nineties. Don’t think there has been a public airshow with a Lightning in it since then. I drove by Cranfield on the way back from the Little Gransden airshow last year and there was still the two-seater visible from the road.
I distincitly recall how loud it was, not the jet pipe but the compressor I think, a horrid piercing whine. Worse than the mother in law!
Hi I assume you only mean the Cranfield airshows not our open day at Brunty ?
Why not come along to Bruntingthorpe on July 22nd and see our two perform 🙂
My mother in law doesnt sound as sweet as an Avon at full power, thats a fact 😀
It was ‘Wing-Commander’.

John.
Well remembered John, I sat here raking the grey matter !
Mind you it was easily forgotten 🙂
Arnold Glass was associated with at least some of the Lightnings, he also operated the Gnat G-GNAT.
I think some of the Lightnings ended up in Southampton or Portsmouth and the cockpits were the basis of some sci-fi movie mock-ups, might even have been Star Wars.
None of the Cranfield cockpits ended up as flim extra’s, the cockpits used were some of the Ex Saudi ones that were brought from Marine Salvage.
MJR will fill the gaps here, I carnt remember the films name
All the Cranfield cockpits are presently cared for as Museum exhibits, XS328 is with the Phoniex guys at Brunty
Hi, just add my bit here;
The three T5’s and three F6’s were flown out of Binbrook to Cranfield just after XR728 was delivered to us a Bruntingthorpe in June 88
The last two F6’s that left did the never to be forgotten ‘touch’ and go on the apron as a good bye before they departed 😮
All were brought by Arnold Glass, who intended to make a flim, which came to nothing, most of them got in a pretty poor state apart from, T5 XS452 and laterly XS458
Here’s a few shots just after they all arrived

These shots were taken a few years later when the work on 452 began to bring her back from the dead

XS452’s cockpit

Some of the rest

XS899 had one leg in the ground at the time, after being blown off the hard standing

If your easily upset then look away now, here’s what became of most of them, all now looking much better than this Im glad to say.

Cheers
Hi 320psi,
Strange, I was going to email you about this when I got around to it, 😉 It only came to me today that you would have known this stuff.
So thanks for the info, if you have anything else that might be useful for me then I’d apprecite it.
I did reply to you about the QRA plans didnt I? I’m sure I did. But yes they where great. I’ve got the QRA for Binbrook built using those very plans, 😀
None of your preserved lightnings are T.5 are they. I’m looking for a good 3-view drawing (front, side, back, top views) of one, so I can build a 3d model. I’ve found lots of drawings for F.3’s and F’6’s but no T.5, and I dont suppose you have any good closeup pictures of the undercarriage from your two I could use to see the detail?
Later
Stevo76;)
No worries, glad the plans were of use to you:)
No neither of our two are T5’s unfortuntaley, we could charge for rides if we had, oh well
T5 plans views, I havent any but I can ask around the lads in the group
As for photos of the gear, again Ive taken any close up’s at all, but if you dont mind waiting a few weeks, I will get lots for you next time Im over, Im having a break for the next few weeks as its been abit hectic of late with the open day looming and Im just easing the martial pressure 😀
We intend to be there on the 16th June to run 728, so I will get the shots for you then if thats OK ?
Cheers
Andy B
Hi, durning the late seventies and eigthies there was normally 1 T5, 3 Mk3’s and 11 MK6’s spread arcoss the 3 squardons
Letters were A-L 6’s, PRS 3’s and the T5 was T.
There were normally about 6-8 a day on the line and there was always 1 or 2 on check 2’s and the rest were U/S
Hope this helps
PS were the QRA hanger plans I sent any good for you ?
What a waste of money, why not donate the money to ten worthy aviation causes instead, like the Grace Spitfire, Sally B ,the LPG QRA appeal or the Solent Sky Walrus project.I am sure £100,000 would go a long way to helping them out.
Because the publicity generated for him won’t be anywhere near what he will get if Concorde is mentioned in the same sentence.
Alan
Well said that man, £40,000 would do to finish the QRA hanger 😀
Cheers
Andy
We are devestated! we have spent the last few weeks re-painting our Jet Provost, XN584, and you go and post a pic of Malc’s tatty XN582! Not only do we feel let down, BUT MALC WILL NEVER LET US LIVE IT DOWN!!!!
Thanks mate!
Best wishes,
OOOPS sorry Ritch, it was totally unplanned I just wondered around at the end of Saturday snaping away 😮
Hi all, just like to second Ritch’s comments, it was a hard day but well worth it, 904 did it for me but Im bias 😀
Heres a few poor shots I got on Saturday with the camera on my phone, when it was a lovely sunny day 😡
First thing Saturday

Our first job was to refit 728’s No2 hatch and bolt her up, then remove the nose jack and tail trestle

Next snag came when we wanted to start towing, our towing arm seized up ! So a strip down and lots of greese was the order of the day.

A few of the other aeros

The SRA hanger is looking fine, well done chaps:)

And back to my first ‘love’s’

See you all in July 😀
Andy B (LPG)
Great shots, thanks for posting 🙂
We in the LPG got very wet indeed, abit like the Last Last Lightning show in 87, even my gundie’s were soaked !
We did have a good day on the stall though, all the brolleys went, so thats abit more to the Q shed fund.
Sorry about 728’s no show, we still have alot of fixing to do before she runs in anger again, also sorry about no cockpit tours either, we just couldnt have the canopy’s up.
But wasnt 904 the star turn, we had a moment on the starter crew as the No1 engine didnt want to play on the first press, but on the second go she went, but thats Lightnings
Dennis gave her a good run considering the tail wind, 135Kts indicated with both burners working a treat, makes the hard work worth while.
The chute got soaked and is now hanging up in my garage drying out, along with all my overalls.;)
Sorry I missed you John, maybe see you in July
Ive took a few shots on Saturday when it was lovely and sunny !
Will post them later
Cheers
Andy B (LPG)
All the best with the ‘op’ 558.
I sure there will be plenty of photos posted to keep you happy.
See you in July 🙂
Glad to hear you got the starter snag sorted ! Will be at Brunti next weekend looking forward to it ! 😀
Keep up good work Scott
Hi Scotty, we havent fixed her yet, its a Lightning and you can never be sure, even when you fixed one snag there’s always one waiting in the ‘wings’ 🙂
We still need to check run the No1 engine
Keep you finger crossed for good weather
Cheers
