Andy, you been inside the QRA sheds? Charles mentioned that one half is nice and the other has been trashed, used for storage of grain or something??
pretty mad to think, that your qra’s will be the only ones in the country still being used to actually house Lightnings.!
Yes, we got permission from the farmer who now owns the shed, we wanted to get photos and dimensions of the crew bungalow before anything happened to it, the buidling its self is used as a farm hand mess room/store ‘mess’ being the operative word, the shed its self is a farm equipment store so lots of big muddy bits
Our long term plan is to maybe recreate the crew quarters on ours, this is a very long term plan though, maybe 20 years away yet with present progress.
We took the dimensions and got lots of pictures of the brackety on the shed structure, which have been invaluable in the process of building our shed.
Here’s a few inside shots

Corridor to the shed
Corridor back to crew room
Inside the shed
And just to get away from this depressing sight heres a few from back in 87

Oh and I dont know what you mean about WAAF’S, you know what they say 😀
Here’s some more of happier times

And one of the few I got on the very wet last last show

🙂
I think he’s gone u/s Milt, I check back tomorrow, make sure that you put a tarp over his spine to keep his starter warm, see you soon.
Yep me starter blew up 😀
Sorry guys, Greasy errk here at last glad Im not on QRA 🙂 after I spoke to you last night Milt my PC died, literally in smoke, I did go down in flames old boy, Im using the work PC today, keep it to yourselves 😉
Anyway this is what Milt said about the place now:
A few of us visited Charles at Binbrook last week. Not much left. C hangars and LTF main hangar are still there, as well as main gate and quarters. Bomb site is still there, and there is a chunk of probably Runway 21 threshold left and thats it. Difficult to tell which runway is which since its hard to get a handle exactly where you are, its such a mess of mounds, concrete wire and soil. The Western QRA sheds look to be intact, and the dispersal pan in front of where the tower was is untouched.
Here we go

Here’s a few of mine taken in early 2006 when we visited to take measurments of the Q shed

Ive got a load from 1987/88, when the place was buzzing, oh and a few from 92 when 724 was delivered I will dig them out, scan and post them if your interested
Sorry once again for the delay, Bl**** PC

Have one for me tonight 🙂
Hi all, just a little update on 728, after a day of spannering and ‘bloody’ knuckles our ‘little’ No1 starter snag is cured 😀
Welding wire and a hoover in the combustion chamber did the trick 🙂 Technical stuff this Lightning lark
On to the next two snags now
Cheers
Andy B
Wonderfull stuff, its sadly missed, I saw it many time across the country,
I stopped going to shows around the time of the mossie’s loss also
Thanks for posting
Congratulations.
Well done.
I will pass on your congratuations when I see them today
Great news! Whats wrong with 728?
Lots…
1. No1 starter system snag that we havent seen before, we did a few checks last weekend, with nothing conclusive, went down the intake removed the dome and atomiser head, which is now on the bench stripped down, basicly we arent getting fuel out in the correct pattern on the fail safe prior to engine start so it could be one of four things, exhaust outlets blocked, HP switch, fuel/air pump, valve in atomiser head, we will sort it, its not the end.
2. No2 Reheat, goes to min after light up, then goes out, which after alot of investigation and tests we have nailed down to Sol 1 which is an electro/mechanical soleniod switch on the jet pipe, we plan to start stripping the back end and pulling the pipe some time soon.
3. No2 engine fuel starvation, which only occures at the end of a fast run, this is a real headscratcher, we have a few ideas but testing and replication of the fault is very difficult and expensive (fuel and runway use)
No worries though, we have over come bigger problems in the past, it all just takes time
Cheers
Yes it sounds alot, makes me realise how lucky we have been over the last 18 years with two Lightnings and all the security at Brunty.
What was the deal about the nose? Something mentioned here on the forum about the nose falling off or something?
Didnt see or hear anything Peter
We stayed around and pulled some weeds out of the Q shed base, so left around 4pm and they were just pulling her back in so got a few shots and then got stuck on the M1 😡
Hi all, I had a great day up there today, Ive been lucky enough to be around Bruntingthorpe for nearly 20 years and have witnessed all the big events over the years and must say today was one of the best, (apart from 728 and 904’s deliveries 😀 ) great sight to see her, loads of happy people, slaps on the backs for the Vulcan team, and a big thanks to Jack Haywood and of course all who have donated over the years.
Ive posted my meager photos of the event from where I was stood on the Photos thread:http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?p=999516#post999516
Well done to the 558 team,
Andy B (LPG)
PS we had an hour on the Q shed pulling all the weeds from the hardcore, thats aircraft preservation at its sharpest end 🙂
Just a few of mine from a great day in the Bruntingthorpes history and of course 558’s

Cheers
