Lighning preservation? Why?
We enjoy it , simple as that and if others enjoy seeing our two old girls run up the runway then so be it, thats why we’ve been doing it for 18 years mostly out of our own pockets, its just a hobby thats all, and when we deem it to expensive and spares become unobtianable we will have a nice hanger to put them in for future generations to see. Thats all its about, no more no less.
We never had any intentions back in 1987 as we stood at crash gate 3 in the driving rain to do anymore that to just preserve one of these awesome beasts, we watched most go out the gate in bits and said we must do something about it, we managed to purchase 728, a big achivement in its self, the engine running and fast taxying just came along the way, then 904 came along at a good price and we carried on doing what we had done before, big ideas about flight have never once been discussed within our small ranks.
How many people out there can say they have done it, Engines in and out, all the other little snags that nessesitate double jointed arms 😀 and personally organising and building a 12,000sqft QRA shed, its been my life for over 20 years and I will keep going with it untill I drop, because I like doing it.
Ive personally had alot of fun, learnt an enormous amount and met many interesting people along the way, Jimmy Dell and Roland Beamont to name but two.
And just to correct you there arent that many Lightnings left around in the same condition as our two.
Keep smiling and good luck to the Vulcan crew.

Hi all, good news, we have decided to give both Lightnings a run on Sunday, both separately, so come along and enjoy.
Also the Vulcan hanger will be open
if the Utterly Butterly girls land, I think Beech Restorations will be taking care of them, so hands off! 😉 :D
Keep smiling
Hi all here’s a few more from the rest of the collection

A couple for the cockpiters

And to keep Phil happy here’s a few of the Beech’s or Beechi
Taken a while back

Cheers 🙂
What other airframes will be made taxiable? Is there plans for any additions to the collection?
Cheers,
J man
Hi to answer your question, the only airframe that is seriously being made taxible at the moment is the Bucc XX894 , which Plazz has been keeping everyone up to date with.
All others like the Vixen, two seat hunter and the other Bucc very long term candiates.
As for additions I doubt it, the collection of privately and Walton owned aircraft is big enough.
Taxiable at present are;
Our two Lightnings
Both of the JP’s
Swiss Hunter
Comet
Victor
Iskra
Camberra
Camo Bucc

is the guppy going walkies with the tug?
Peter the Tug is used as ballast when the winds get up the Guppy has a nasty habbit of walking off in high winds, the 5 tons of tug give it a nice fixed down position.
Could the Mysteire be made taxiable? She did seem to have an engine in her when i was at the open day but i did not look closely.
No chance, she might look reasonably good on the outside but she is well past her running days, she dosent stand close inspection.
The engine is still in but hasnt turned for many many years.
Its just a nice cosmetic job
Don’t you like Beech 18’s then andy?
Love the beech Phil, just didnt want to wander over as the storm was fast aproaching 🙂
Love shots 7 and 9 the 1st class toilet block, super.
And we will get round to painting that tug one day
I got a load of shots as well, will post them tonight.
Before the storm arrived we had been working on 904’s starter snag and managed to fix it, so she’s all ready for the Aug open day 🙂
Fransis assume you carried on with it on Sunday, any problems ?
Cheers
Taffy, Many thanks for sharing your nerve racking experince with us all.
Kind regards from one who runs Avons into reheat staticly on a regular basis
