Hi, our open day is Saturday 8th July, gates open at 10.30am
    Adults £12
    Kids and OAP’s £6
There will be two separate lightning runs durning the morning and when they have both cooled down a pairs run in the afternoon

Love the SRA shed lads, looks great well done.
This is what it looked like before we took it down in May 2004 to make way for our ‘little’ shed

    I have to add we’ve now got a ‘bigger one’ 😀 😀
    And two years later we have this;

Anybody got 30K for the concrete ??

Phil,TT see you on the 17th June if your on site, we’re planning an antidet run with 904.

    Cheers

To give you an idea of the fuel consumption…

😮 😮 😮 What an absolutely legendary aircraft!!! :diablo: :diablo: :diablo:

Fuel consumption of an Avon 302 at full power = 3.5 Gallons per second 😀

Would love to see all four flying together, cant have been seen since June 88, I dont think BAE ever had four flying at the same time durning the Foxhunter trials, remember seeing 693, 773 and 904 launch together at Warton. 😀
Here’s a shot from the last line up at Warton

And my last shot of a four ship in May 88 at Binbrook

And some from S Africa on the last visit

    Enjoy 🙂

Oh and dont forget if you want to get a fix of autur and flame, our open day is only a month away 😉

Both Vulcan and Victor for me, the Victor just looks like something that someone drew with a pencil on a drawing board, (which they did) such lovely lines.
The Vulcan has such a great sound, not as good as a Lightning at low level mind you 😀

Thanks Denis, thats very kind of you, I am sure you are just as infomative as a pilot 😉 . I will have to see if I can do a Brunters tour day and fufill my promise to see TT’s projects and the QRA Hangar at the same time.
Hey now theres a plan, how about a forum tour of the Brunty projects, with donations dropped in various buckets along the way?! 😀
    Cheers, Alan.

Alan, if you do want to organise a trip to Bruntingthorpe for forum members I will be only to willing to sort things of behalf of the LPG, maybe tie the visit in with an antidet run of one of our two and a tour round the Q shed site as well? (I can have a 45 gallon donations ‘bucket’ ready) 😀 😀

What do you think Denis, TT, Plazz, Phil ?

Maybe some time in June as 904 will be wanting a little stir ?

Hi, have a look here http://www.lightnings.org.uk/ Im sure in our video/DVD cataloge there is a copy with the Last, last Lightning show on or at least of the practice which was the day before when the weather was perfect. 🙁 🙁
The weather on the day was total Sh*** which is why not many camera’s were out or even working due the the ‘slight’ wetness.

    Here’s a few still’s from the day, enjoy: 🙂

Our very own XR728 waiting for John Spencer

These next few sum up the whole day, my camera gave up in the end ! 🙁

This was worth getting wet grundie’s for

you are all doing a great job well done,it is a bit upsetting as i have never had the privelige of seeing a lightning in the air..but in working condition is better then just rusting away in a museum..but im so happy about the bucc,it is one of my favorite aircraft of all time..i really cant wait to see one flying again….as you said like everything these days money is the biggest problem in getting these fantastic old classics airborne again.lets hope 1 day some multi billionaire will buy a shed load of these aircraft and fly them…..
    keep up the good work.

Many thanks, like you say working condition is better than rotting away, its a happy medium.
As for a billionaire buying a shed load of these lovely old classics, it would have to be a small shed, there arent many left 😉

Please come along on the 8th you wont be dissapointed

Oh and here’s a couple of shots for you from my album’s, as you never witnessed them flying,
Binbrook’s last, last Lightning show, boy did it rain !
But it was worth the wet ‘trollies’

I love this shot it sums the day up

As this topic has been covered before I sharnt go on about it but to see a Lightning fly you will need to go to Cape Town, or maybe one day the States where the AALO are rebuilding XS422, like all these things its time and shed loads of money. (XH558 being a good example)
Maybe MJR might want to add something in here about 422 ?

I very much doubt you will see a Lightning fly in the UK again.
Please dont get upset with me when I say, the likes of Lightnings flying in the UK is a thing of the past, theyve had their day, we who witnessed them flying in service were lucky, but its over, this is one of the reasons we 12 guys who own 728 and 904 do what we do, just keeping the memory alive in an affordable and safe way.
I must add here that when we brought 728 back in June 1988 we had no intentions running her at all, that just happened along the way, the last 18 years has been a bonus for all of us who have played a part in it and for all the members of the public who have attended our open days who never thought they would see a Lightning move again under it own ‘steam’ again.

I cant speak for the other owners of Lightnings in the UK but we the LPG have no intentions of going anywhere near flight with our two, we will just keep them gound runnable for as long as possible, then retire then to the QRA hanger.

As costs of insurance and fuel for even fast taxing have seriously sprialed upwards in the last couple of years it may not be that long before we say enough’s, enough.

Come along to Brunty on the 8th July and savour the atmosphere.

As for Victors, well I can safely speak for the Brunty one, there are no plans to do anything but keep it ground runnable for the same reasons as our two Lightnings.

Good luck to the guys at HAA with the Bucc 🙂
    Cheers

no probs – sorry the quality of the pics is not too good – it was a bit bumpy up there today and most of my shots were blurred!

I didnt know about the hanger next to the Belfast hanger – when was that built? – is that for the ‘car re-processing’ company?

Its was built last year, its now the main spray shop/vehicle distrubution/offices building for the car and HGV contracts.
We have done well from it, due to making contact with contrators on site which have helped us out with the Q shed

Lovely pics of Brunty, thanks, and yes I have to agree from the air the QRA hanger foot print does look big all 12,000 sq feet of it.
The down side is we have now got to fill it with concrete 😮

    Thanks for posting

Nice pics – what’s the circle of concrete north of the Lightning hangar?

Hi its the old USAF fuel dump, there is a concrete bunker in the middle of the circle which is all over grown now, the area is now where all the kennels for the security dogs are kept, somewhere you dont want to go unless your brave. 😉
