I agree Andy
we do sometimes take for granted the kindness offered by the Walton family……….. others don’t realise.
Dave actually spent £10,000 on getting it stripped, filled and painted!!
I had assumed he had spent some money on it to get it painted.
Enough said.
We dont take any of the kindness the Waltons show us for granted, we would be know where if it werent for their generosity which started back in 1987.
I have just got to add my two pennies to this thread,
I know its not the correct colour, but hay, someone has taken time out to take it apart, clean it and paint it, it will give it a few more years, all these things come down to time and money and someone has put their hand in their pocket and spent some money.
Bruntingthorpe is first and foremost an automotive site, without this bussiness we the owners of all these lovely old jets that we keep in running condition for all to come and enjoy out of our own pockets, wouldnt have a free home that we treat as our own, and all our money would go on ground rentals, with nothing left for insurance and fuel.
I assume the Waltons might have a big Jaguar event/contract and gave it a lick of paint for the customer, it was badly in need of some TLC.
I say well done

Here’s a few of yours truly over a few years in and around our Lightnings at Brunt
Strapping Jimmy Dell into 904 prior to his one and only run 1998
Talking a guest round the cockpit prior to an antidet run Nov 2005
Just about to do battle with the mallet on a brake chute prior to the May open day 1995
The Cortina was owned by the Jim (screw driver in hand) untill just recently and Capri by me, they were two very faithfull old cars, the Capri is now wrapped up in my garage 😀

[QUOTE=TEXANTOMCAT]
but we are trying, should be July 8th/9th
as long as you know thats the same weekend as Leg Ends….
TT
Yeh, yeh I know, unforuntately we have been stuck with this date for a number of years, its the only date in the Bruntingthorpe calender that we can use the track inconcusion with another event and get away with not paying for the hire of the track, to hire it for the day, pay insurance and fuel would canel out our takings its the lesser of a few evils.
Its someting we have discussed many times and carnt see a way around it, its a shame I know.
Nev I think….
BTW any date for the LPG Open Day(s) yet fella?
TT
Ben, dont think anyone would be successful in getting it into a runable state, a cosmetic job would be about all. Is it Nev thats selling her ?
As for the open days all I can confirm is that the May open day is not going ahead due to track commitments.
We the LPG are pushing the Waltons gently for our July QRA day which we need for the ongoing fund raising efforts, this is by no means in the bag but we are trying, should be July 8th/9th if we get the green light, which coincides with the Formula Student track day which means we can have the runway for free, even better 😉
Will post some thing on the QRA hangar thread when I know more.
Correcto. No, she’s not a flying example. I seem to recall there were originally plans to get her fired up at Brunty before she was sold.
If ypu dont mind me asked who was planning to get her running ??
Bruntinghtorpe, but Im bound to say that, it would be nice to see a big day orgnaised for all of us to contribute to.
Its well worth a visit, loads of sunshine and lovely old jets like these where they should be

Hi to all, just recived my copy and its as good as I remember,
Thanks for the help in tracking it down
We have always used a 40% liquid WD40 60% Waxoil mix on both of ours for the last 18 years, we mop it on in Oct/Nov and wipe it all off the upper surfaces and sides again in the spring ready for open days, the wheel bays are well thick with the stuff and show no signs of corrosion, we keep the tyres covered all the time and they are topped up every 2 – 3 weeks.
Both A/C have sat outside for the majority of that time with covers over the cockpit, nose, jet pipes and spine.
All grease points are topped up every 12 months, and of course the liberal doses of TLC, I have yet to find any major signs of corrosion on either of our two, and we have over the years been deep inside them for all the usual fixing of things, its always an engine out to do any job on a Lightning :rolleyes:so we get lots of chances to have a good luck around inside the airframes.
Just keep doing what you think is best for the aircraft.
Lovely to hear of 163’s return to life, great and well done to all involved. Here’s a couple of shots of her when based at Brunty.
Weekend after she had arrived in company with WT333
And just after she had been repainted in silver
Great news

Just thought I would add this resume of the flim.
CBS’ first made-for-TV movie, Sole Survivor is a fantasy yarn founded on fact. In 1960, the ruins of an American bomber were found in the Libyan desert…but the remains of the crew were never located. In Guerdon Trueblood’s teleplay, the ghosts of a bomber crew hang around their derelict plane, awaiting the day that their bones will be recovered and given a decent burial. The sole survivor, navigator Russell Hamner (Richard Basehart), has in the intervening 25 years become a general. He joins an investigation team that has come across the wreckage, while the ghosts, headed by Major Devlin (Vince Edwards), plot to expose Hamner as a coward who deserted his post and left his crew mates to die.
