Hi!
Re XR728, I was just curious as to what was up with her? I notice that she got shut down before the pairs run last time…. Is it the same problem?
Paul
Just a note to all interested parties out there, last Saturday we managed to solve the No2 starter snag on XR728, it truned out to be the HT supply box in the spine which for some reason unknown as yet wasnt putting out enough umph, we swapped it with a servicable unit and tried the start cycle serveral times with no hickups.
All these little electrical snags we get are due to them being kept outside, so lets hope we can raise abit more cash on Sunday to go in the QRA hanger fund.
XR728 is still due to be on static display durning the day to get as many people in the cockpit as possible which will help the fund raising efforts and halve our fuel bill and insurance costs for the day !
As yet I dont have a running order for the open day but will post something when I get it.
Hope to see you there, fingers crossed for the weather
Rub frame almost completed – or it will be by saturday!
Think Tony brought T-6G G-DDMV in on Sunday Andy – did you see him? Did he do any aeros? Did the Lightnings have a burn up?
TJ – think youre right about the Volpar conversion but dont mind the Turbine conversion so much if they leave the glazing and dual fins alone!
TT
Great news about the frame, means we can get moving on the base, I noticed on Sunday there was just one large section and a load of straight bits still on the left hand side.
As far as I was aware I didnt see any sign of the T-6 on Sunday, just the Stearmans, Extra and Pitts
No we didnt even get the covers off the lightnings, many reasons why you know the usual stuff, the day for us was a waste of time, and running one of the was out of the question due to the track being in constant use with all the hot cars flying round, met some interested punters who had never heard of Bruntingthorpe before ! So got some good PR for the open day and shed
Cheers
Andy
I know…..those volpar 18’s are not the real deal…….they look awfull in my opinion.
Ours is coming along…..slowly but still coming on…..
electrics is holding us up at the moment as is the weather…….we were inside under the vulcan until a few weeks back…..we were able to work on it easily inside……..outside it is a real problem
hope to have her running in next month or so….
i must update my website

Phil, was at the asda day on Sunday, due to lots of problems none of us got our A/C into their display area usual Bruntingthorpe problems !
All in all and interesting day though, Crunchy Stearmans, Extra 300 and a Pitts did some really neat flying.
Anyway noticed that some nice person has parked about 200 tons of earth right by the side of the Beech !
Assume you know and assume you werent best pleased
Lots of people who saw it made some very pleasing comments, its a credit to you guys.
Hows the Rub frame removals going ? weve got a diiger and driver waiting to start
Thanks ‘you guys’ you are bringing a tear to my eye, we do try us in the LPG,
Will be in the que for a sit in your cockpit darling
roger you will really enjoy finningley from 1981. It will probably have a vulcan scramble and the first appearance of concorde there too. lucky devil! The best thing for you to do is get it transfered to dvd.
I was there that day, aged 15, my mate and I (we used to cycle there and back best part of 15 miles each way) stood infront of one of the Hanger doors while the Vulcan’s scrambled, my god what a noise, will never forget it have still got the progammes, and it was the first time I was able to get up close to Concorde.
Finningley was always a special airshow for me never missed one from 1978 to the last one in 93 (was it 93 or 94 ?)
Seeing the F3 Lightning from Binbrook display set a course for me in latter life to eventually be lucky enough to become involved in buying and owning two of them ! Small acorn’s and all that π
Excellent set of photo’s thanks for posting, love the Lightning’s behind the Victor shot
Thanks for sharing π
Hi all just got this message from Denis Parker who looks after visitors to the Vulcan 558 hanger:
Ouote;Hi Andy
Spread the news…the hangar will be open at Β£5.00 per head and as David is worried about the new building’s security, has asked me to keep a strict control of the visitors, therefore we are running one possibly two mini-buses, ie nobody will be allowed to walk to the hangar.
Regards
Denis
I dont want to fan the flames on this one but in the defence of Vulcan trust they like us wont be seeing any of the gate takings from the open day, and they must still have a long way to go with their fund raising efforts, like all these projects its gonna cost alot more in the end.
I for one wont be paying a fiver to have a look round the hanger Ive been lucky enough to have been in there many times in the last 12 years, but like us charging a fiver for a sit in one of our cockpits they do still need to keep the money coming in, I can hear you all say what about the lottery money but I personally feel that amount will be a drop in the ocean for this project.
Its just a thought, dont get all anti Vulcan π
By the way, how much is it to sit in a Lightning? Always wanted a look in the fine beasts. Also, is it the camouflaged Lightning that’s going to be running? Hope so, she’s my favourite π
Hi, we usually charge a fiver for a cockpit tour, which is not just a quick sit in and ‘out you get mate’ one of us will go though all the instruments with you and answer any questions you have. We put the charge up from Β£3 a few years ago when the insurance doubled and fuel prices started to rocket.
The along with selling souvenirs its our only income on the coldwar jets days, so its important we get a few in for a look around.
Your in luck yes the camo Lightning XS904 is the one we will be running, if you dont mind me asking why is she your favourite ?
Assume at your peril Andy!
Beech’ll be there not sure about the T-6 yetTTFN

Hi!
Re XR728, I was just curious as to what was up with her? I notice that she got shut down before the pairs run last time…. Is it the same problem?
Paul
Yeh, it is the same problem which we havent begun to investigate yet with all the QRA hanger work we are doing as well, and the two of us that do all the problem solving in the LPG being away on Holiday (no excuse I here you say).
Basicly last time out at the July Open day the No1 started on its second try so not a good omen, we then went for a start on the No2 and had 3 in a row ‘A’ failures (means no iginition on the avpin start up system) and the book says you only get 3 trys and then stop, all this was happening infront of the crowd with XS904 running at the side of us and 728’s No1 running at 65% power so you can imagine the pressure and sweat !
We tried all the usual linie tricks like whacking the LP switch with the butt end of the GS but to no avail, we even began to swap all the control box leads from the No1 to No2 start systems but thats when the No1 jet pipe began to warm up some residue OM15 and we saw smoke so called it a day.
This stater snag is something very unsual for either of our two A/C, we occasionally get these snags but not to this degree, there are a few things we are going to follow up, firstly back in June we changed the No2 starter due to the old one being up to its 800 shots, we changed it for a boxed new one which we have had in store for a while, we then did alot of checks and starts with no cause for concern, but of course its a Lightning it was infront of the crowd (abit shy I think) and it was at least 30 degree’s that day, so I think the old girl just wasnt going to play.
Seriously we will have a look at the Mk8 control box and the main HT connector block which are both important parts within the starter system, mind you saying all this you watch the next time we try it on a normal saturday afternoon she will start first press !
We have seen this sort of thing many time’s before and the problem’s are aways a pretty easy fix, nothing to worry about.
Its all part of the fun of keeping these old girls going, we will sort it.
Assume at your peril Andy!

Yeh, did think that when I wrote it, really not sure on the hanger situation,
will find out more this coming weekend
Hi, no details as yet on running order but all aircraft are servicable, (apart from XR728) should be the usual 10.30am start running though to 4pm, JP’s, Victor, Comet, Bucc, Iskra, Hunter, just one Lightning run this time round due to insurance costs and 728 being sick.
I can only assme the Vulcan hanger will be open for inspection.
Hi have been doing some digging and the A/C above is more than likley to be T54 54-651.
The Saudis only had 2 T54s, 54-650 is on a plinth, and I think painted silver, so unless itβs been taken off then it must be 54-651.
Just for the record 54-651 was written off after a starter fire in 1970 !
Hope this helps
