Brian Caroll
To all, just a note about Brian, we had a dedication ceremony at our July open day where we invited Brian’s wife and family to come over and unveil Brian’s name under the cockpit of XS904 (his favorite A/C out of the two), they were every moved by our gesture, and then gave us a nice donation to the QRA hanger project in his name.
I for one can say I really miss Brian we spent many hours with him and he was always a gentleman, and very professional once he was strapped in.
Have a look at our web site for more info on our little hobby and come along to the next open day on the 28th Aug

Have a look at this write up he did for us on his return from S Africa in 2004 when he had a trip in the one of Thunder City’s T5’s: http://www.photo-restorations.co.uk/lightnings/briancarrollct5flight2003.htm

FOR ALL YOU XS458 FANS I AM THE NEW OWNER I HAVE BEEN SINCE DECEMBER 2001WHEN I BOUGHT FROM TONY HULLS THE AIRCRAFT IS THE MOST ACTIVE LIGHTNING IN THE UK SHE IS STARTED ONCE A MONTH FOR EITHER STACTIC OR HIGH SPEED RUNS.IN AUGUST WE CELEBRATED THE 50TH WHICH IS IN NOVEMBER ISSUE SORRY I COULD NOT MAKE IT A PUBLIC DAY BUT THERE IS ONLY SIX OF US IN THE CREW AND CRANFIELD IS A CAA AIRFIELD. WE WILL HAVE A WEB SITE VERY SOON KEEP YOU POSTED RMC
RMC dont want to start a lightning groups ‘war’ but arent we the LPG with our TWO taxiable F6’s just as active ? we staticly run our two every 4 – 6 weeks with 3 public open days a year.
Andy B (LPG)
You would not believe the problems which arise from live public displays of vintage aircraft, the public liability on its own opens a major can of worms, and is generally prohibitive, ” familly and friends” gatherings are a different matter. If it was a easy as LPG make it look everyone would be doing it. We used to, for over 10 years in fact, until public liabilty insurance became impossible aftersept 11th.
MJR
Have to add something here guys as one of the owners of the two F6’s at Brunt, I have to say firstly thanks MJR for the line ‘If it was a easy as LPG make it look’
Words like that make all our hard work worth while,
But seriously the issue of public liability is a real future problem, for instance our last open day on July 10th we stumped up £2000 in advance for one day just to have the public on site, I dread to think how you would go about insuring people for rides in XS458.
Cheers

Hi all, have a look at this site, there’s enough original photo’s from all three programes to keep you going for ever, the quality of the images from the Apollo era just breath taking, they must have been using the best camera’s around at the time.
http://www.apolloarchive.com/apollo_gallery.html
Was always impressed by the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programes, the Saturun V rocket even today seems a staggering achivement.
I was born 6 months before Armstrong and Aldrin set foot on the moon dont remember it first hand but can just remember the later Saturn V launches in about 1973 on the telly
Cheers
Yes please would love to see more, we who own and run them never get any shots, due to being very busy during the day, hope those who came enjoyed the day, we managed to raise enough cash to get started on the concrete base and put the roof on the QRA hanger so all in all it was well worth it.
Please come along on the 28th Aug
Andy B (LPG)
Good pics Steve and great to hear it was a success. Wish you guys would schedule an open day that didn’t conflict with Legends or Little Gransden though.
Yeh, really sorry we clashed with other events, back in March when we were having delicate discussions with the owners of Bruntingthorpe about the possiblity of an open day they could only let us have the 10th July which was the only date available at the time when the runway and site were not being used by paying customers, we had no choice other than to take it.
The cost of the site would have taken alot of our profits from the day had we had to pay to hire the runway.
Please try and make it on the 28th
Andy B
Thanks Ben, you certainly aroused some keen interest.
Its looking really good
Thanks.
Andy (LPG)
Phil, we have been invited to tow one of our two Lightnings up to fill the static show, should be agood day, last year was.
Oh by the way Ive been asked what is the tail number of your T-6 ?
Andy B
Great pics, glad you enjoyed the day.
We managed to raise a few more thousand pounds for the QRA hanger, which should see us get the base down and roof on by the end of the year.
See you next time
Andy B
Phil Knew it was you straight away, is it your age catching up !
The T-6 would be a great addition to the day please bring it out with you
Good news about the Rub frame, we’ve been badgering DW for ages to get it moved, we have a guy with a big bulldozer just primed and ready to open up the entrance drive way, so the quicker you can make the Rub frame vanish the better.
Good news about you finally getting the tug and thanks for the offer of kit we might well take you up on it, Im sure you can trust us.
Any news on when your coming out the Hanger ?
Or is that just a case of keep it quite and they might forget you ?
Mind you if you drag it out on Sunday they might just lock the doors behind you !
Catch up on Saturday mate
Andy B
We could fast taxi her…backwards at about 30mph – that be ok? 😀
Not gonna fire up the Bucc(s) Victor and Comet then boys?
Now that I would like to see, the beech going backwards, great !
No the Comet, Bucc and Victor wont be joining in, its just an LPG day with a few extra’s, mind you Guy Hulme with Buccaneer XX894 has offered to do a systems demo now that they have it all folding, spreading and drooping, which is ‘nice’ of the them
Andy
Phil you missed the joke,
I didnt know how far from flying you guys were
And we need more funding for the hanger not another Beech 18 project
just sorry we won’t be ready to fly the beech that day.
What do you mean ?
Are you close ??
Assume its funds thats holding you up, like us
See you Saturday
Andy
Cheers, will we be able to see the QRA shed as it is at the moment? Also, was Brian Caroll one of the three ex-lightnings pilots present at the Bea Beaumont open day? While they were all busy signing paintings the kind gentlemen signed a small print i had of a lightning (I was about 12 so couldn’t afford a big print), still got it somewhere it means quite a lot to me.
Yes everybody who come’s will be more than welcome to view the progress we have made in the last six months, which is staggering when you think its all been done a a shoe string with only a few of us doing the graft, here’s some shots I took last Saturday
http://www.geocities.com/andybonsell/photopage1b.html
This week the roof beams are going in on the west side bay
Yes Brian was one of the days performers, giving his usual flare to the event, I remember him geting out after run and walking straight over to the crowd for a chat.
Heres some shots taken on the Bee Beaumont day, the group shot shows: L to R Brian Caroll,Jimmy Dell (performed the most flight in TRS2),AVM ret.PeterCollins,John Spencer and Dennis Brooks
Maybe it was Brian who sined your print, mind you any of them would have done the same for you.

Great, Bruntys just down the road from me so might go down with my dad. Will it be at the end of Bruntingthorpe that the normal open days i held? I went to the LPG day when it was at the other end of the airfield, i think it was in recognition of the test pilot Bea Beaumont (Not sure of his name, i hope thats it)
Hi glad to hear you are coming, please spread the word we need a big push this time.
To answer your question no its not at the top end this year, its at the main end which is accessable from the main gate just outside Bruntingthopre village, go to our web site for a map if need be.
Yes that previous open day was in memory of Bea Beaumont, as he had passed away the previous year, its sad that this open day is commemorating another great Lightning personality and a really nice gentleman, who was always willing to chat to anyone especially about Lightnings, I am proud to have known him.
His account of his trip in one of the two seaters in S Africa in 2004 is well worth a read he thanked us afterwards for keeping him ‘current’ , you will find it on our web site.
Cheers
