Hi all,
After lots of digging in the loft I havent found the shots of the Victor landing,
I have the ‘landed’ ones so these will have to do sorry, its really bugging me to be honest
1993 was a busy year, Brunty had her first airshow (big thunder) in July which was really good fun, with loads of visting aircraft, the two Buccs doing a low level beat up along the length of the runway will stick in my memory for ever [;)]
We ran our first ‘simulated pairs’ take off which was impressive to say the least
Anyway at the end of the year November we had two aircraft delivered on the same day, the Victor XM715 for Davids BAH collection and the first Camberra XH568, they arrived within an hour of each other, sadly 568 is not longer of this world

And then the Camberra

Quite a day, and b***** cold as well [;)]
Cheers
Hi Guys, just seen this thread!
I don’t have anything to do with the museum aircraft but i do know this! Unfortunatly 903 doesnt have any donks fitted, apparently it was £1000 for the owner to have it with them fitted so they took them after it landed! The whole aircraft is internally waxoiled and in quite good nick. The roller blind horizon and the compass are in the archives as is the stick top to stop anybody pikying it!
As for running, no chance, the avpin tank was chisled out and emptied into a nearby pond, the fuel tanks were all drilled to let the fuel come out and god knows what else the RAF did to the poor girl!
The hyds are still used to raise and lower the canopy, so its not completely dead….
Ollie
Thanks Ollie,
🙂
Hi all 😉
1993 ended up being a ‘big’ year at Bruntingthorpe, in Jan we took delivery of 904 and in the middle of March David told us about ‘this Vulcan ‘thing’ that was in the ‘offing’.
He invited some of us to join him and his family to fly over to Waddington to watch 558 leave, so on that windy and cold March morning we arrived early, towed both of ours out to the reception pan and waited for the DC3.
I forgot my camera ! Doh
So brought I disposable one on the way and wasnt happy with it, as it played up all day 😮
9am The ‘Taxy’ arrives

Landed at Waddo

Here she comes

There she goes

And then back to Brunty

I missed the landing as I was fighting with the camera, so just watched it.

When the crowds had gone we got close, even learnt how to attach the two bar and towed it the next day

And that unfortunatley is all I got, as the camera kept packing up, but I did have a great day 😉
I remember watching this on the local news,I am sure I have still got it on video somewhere!
Looking at the views of the airfield brings back some great memories of the Big Thunder displays there, they had some really good lineups.Pity that they are no longer possible.
Got loads of shots from all three ‘Big Thunders’ as well
They were very enjoyable for us on the ‘inside’ 😉
The idea of more isnt completly dead 😉
Would like to see your vid of the arrival 😉
Yorkie,
897 was rescued from Rossington but not before her wings were cut off and a JCB was halfway into her spine, there were a few others that were rescued either in cockpit form or complete airframe.
320psi will be able to fill you in with the full details.
Regards,
John.
The only other one I know that got away was 725, now with Charles Ross, or was 416 rescued as well ?
Ummmm:confused:
I know it wouldn’t look pretty, but would it at least help keeping the elements out if you (insert ‘someone’) were to rivet over a sheet of aluminum with a bit o sealant around it. Like I said, it’s not pretty, but I a ‘proper’ fix sounds like a great deal of work. At least it would keep some of the weather out.
Does anyone have any photos that they could share of her arriving at Bruntingthorpe?
Hearing everything Rich, if you need our help just call on us any Saturday, we will help you guys out, just shout 🙂
VX927, yes I was there that day in the summer of 1995
I got a call at lunch, made my excuses and dashed off only to get stuck on the bl**** M1 so I was 1/2 hour late !!!!!!!! 😡
But go this shot, her engines were still ‘ticking’ 😉

If anyone interested Ive been there for most of the Brunty arrivals over the last 20 years, got some nice piccies 😉
Rich, dont despair mate, we will give you a hand 🙂
Cheers all
Some shocking stuff Andy, at least they were not all lost to the scrap mans axe.
Regards,
John.
Yeh 725 was there
Yes please go on Andy start a Lightning pic thread 😎
No worries, seem big barf has kicked it off while Ive been out 😉
Will join in soon 🙂
Right, found them
Scanned them
Are you ready ? Theres no hiding behind the cushions
The line of wrecks

Intakes

And Ive found one of 903 not that many years after she arrived at Elvington

Give photobucket a chance to sort its self out !
Cheers
I think I will pay another visit to Elvington next week and see wots the score, I’ll pop to aero venture too and get some pics of there F3 and F6 and post them up,
I went to Rossington Scrap Yard back in 93 and there were about 10 lightings there, on speaking to the chap who owned them he wanted £6000 each for them:eek: does any one have any pics of the Rossington aircraft when they where there?
Sounds good, get the museum guys to remove the intake blank for you, stick your head down the front and if there is engines in her you will be able to see the No1 at least, though like John says, she does sit like she still has 3 tons in her insides
I do, will dig them out for you, we made a few visits to get bits from them back in our early days 😉
Changing the subject slightly, is anyone interested in me starting a ‘Lightning photos thread’ ?
Ive been compling loads of stuff from way back when just lately.
Oops, you beat me to it Andy!!!!.
John.
Your reply sums it up John, 😉
Is not just engines though that would be a snag (would be a biggy though )
All the fuel and hyd lines and more importantly their seals will be dry as a bone, the nozzles will be seized solid, the ATBG box will have its own ‘eco culture’ going on.
The whole lot inclunding fuel system, hyd system, reheat systems, electrical, starter systems, the list is a bigun, would need completly rebuilding
Remember someone at the end any sort of indepth work has to sit in the seat and press the button, a very sobering thought, belive me
Aircraft like the lighting are not forgiving of the ‘inexpericned’ or for that matter the ‘experienced’ 😉
And the owner oviously doesnt want to do anything else with her, end of story really.
Shes a lovely museum exhibit, complete and looking like a Lightning should, abit of a paint wouldnt go a miss, or even just a good old waxoiling and a polish, wouldnt take more than one days work for a crew of 4, but its dosent end there, you gotta keep doing it, every 2-4 weeks, I know 😉
Please dont read my replies as negative, they arent meant to be, Im a realist, a ‘doer’ and I speak with 20 years of Lightning experience behind me
🙂
She was flown in 😉
Cheers
at least 903 is in one piece???
Thats very true, she is a great museum machine,:)
But running thats another ball game 😉
320psi
It was only what I was told a few years ago not sure how true it was………and I was only offering my services if needed if a project was ever to start
I Understand Yorkie 🙂
But to bring her back to running after all these years, honestly, forget it, certain ground runable spares are very scare.
Its a none starter Im affraid
Does MJR care to add owt ?
Well never say never although spares could be a problem especially the precious AVPIN right Andy?
Peter yes, and the rest, belive me the list goes on
