Great stories going here all 😉

They were all ‘cool headed’ they were that way, had to be.

Its shines out of all our pilots we use for our aborted takeoff’s, John Spencer, Dennis Boorks, Ian Wilde, Keith Hartley, Andy Williams and the coolest Ligthning pilot ever has to be the late Brian Carrol, nothing would faise him.

Anyway on to the snaps from that wet day

I think it was Chris’s last flight before going off to fly airliners – he was definitely one of the singletons.

Other pilots-wise, not totally sure of all but I think probably at least some of those below

    John Spencer
    Jake Jarron
    Porky Page
    John Carter
    Chris Allan
    Chris Berners-Price
    Simon Braithwaite?
    Andy Holmes?
    Iain McDonald-Webb?

Despite the weather, what a fantastic (but sad) day.

Its was a sad day, the last flights out of Binbrook were even sadder, when 728 left there were just the Cranfield ones left, 898,899,923,328,452 and 458 The place was so sad
When the day came for the last two to leave it was a strange day, one BL or BD, I think, failed to start on her No1, LP switch got a ‘seeing to’ with a GS (by Ray Nightingale) and then went on the second ‘press’.

They taxied out from an empty pan, took off, vertical climb and came back across and did a low flyby over the ASP’s then pulled vertical again and were gone, brilliant stuf, staff and people just stood in silence, some began talking in groups after the thunder had died away, then just wandered off to start packing up.
Shivers down the spin sort of stuff really

If you mean Chris Berners Price I think his last flight was in June 88 when he delivered 728 to us 😉

Great memories, that we try very hard to keep alive at Brunty, its one of the reasons we work so hard 🙂

Yes, definately an F.6 as it’s got the kinked wing leading edge.

After the nine broke up, several of the F.6’s did some low fast passes. I videod this at the time.

Anyone know who the 9 pilots were in that 22nd Aug diamond nine…??

Also, does anyone happen to know the serial of the dark grey F.6 that they were doing the in-cockpit photos in, in one of the hangers, on that wet Saturday all those years ago….?

I know John Spencer was in 728 leading the formation, also Chris Berners Price, John Aldington and Bob Bees were in there somewhere, as for the rest, ummm cant remember at the mo, Im going to have to do some digging 😉

As for the serial of the cockpit photos areo, ummmmm, carnt remember either soz

Here’s a few more pics of that wet wet day

The HLF would probably want an explanation of what was going on if the Vulcan suddenly decided to head westbound. Add to that the various lifed items and unknown access to the aircraft and it would be grounded.

Easier to fly her to Elvington and ask the HLF for some more cash to put her and the Victor inside with the ability for them to be pulled out to fast taxi.

The Bruntingthorpe Lightning lads seem to have plotted the course on sensible preservation!

    Thankyou for that David 😉

Its wasnt plotted though, its just happened

One step a time, keep it simple and most importantly ‘fun’ 😉

Nice shots. Wish I’d been there.

Seems as though the top engine isn’t working properly – no shocks in the flame. Am I right about that?

Just to add my two penath 😉
Sorry abit slow to read this Doh !

Darren, firstly, wow, amazing photos in what must have been ‘interesting’ weather.

The reason why the burners look different is simple, when Darren took that shot Dennis (Im assumig it was ‘our’ Dennis in the seat ?) hadnt engaged both burners at the same time, its very easily done, ‘rocking’ both though the ‘gate’ at the same moment, is virtually impossible.

What your seeing is the No2 (top) engine just milli seconds behind the No1 (bottom), the No2 is right at the end of of its ‘hot shot’ cycle, with the burner about to come on to full song, which the No1 has already done.

There is alot of ‘stuff’ in there catching up, fuel pressures, soleoind swtches clicking over etc, all manner of gizzmos and its all 40+ years old.

If you can manage to get them both in at the same time, there is no reason why both wouldnt lite the same, there however is a tiny time lag with the No1as the ‘hot shot’ has to travel further down the pipe before it hits the burner ring, but there aint much in it.
As you may or may not know nothing is ever straight forward on a Lightning 😀

458 is a credit to Russel and his team, nice one lads 🙂

I have asked before but is there anywhere that has a calender of the Lightning runs as i am (just) old enough to remember them flying at Cranfield and would love to see one scream down the runway again.

I only live about 4 miles away so getting there is no problem but do you still have to sneak between the hangars to get to the apron unobserved (or was that just air show days?).

Either way a sight to behold.

it was effing ridiculous mate, we were marooned until 8 tonight by 2 feet of water flowing down the driveway!

Yeah first starter was pretty skanky, that’s what sitting at warton outside does for 4 years!!. the spark gaps were fine after a uick clean up, and the drain hole was clear too, (all that build up in there was after we had run a brush through after splitting the case open) as were the diffuser ports clear. though all of the diffuser port leading edges show signs of cavitation stress.( hence, suspect this little sucker has 500+ shots on it, the paper work will confirm) will be interesting to see what the other 9 units are like. We avent opened the atomiser yet, need to collate the figures for the “tols” from the IPC’s, unless you got em handy;).. This ones probably a scrapper really, it certainly won’t be going on a engine as first choice.

ave a butchers at this diffuser plate port damage, most of the ports show signs of cavitation damage.

Whas your standard prodding tool then??? and is it painfull? LOL

Milt, I will mail you the atmoiser valve ‘tols’ and spring weight ratio’s 😉
Done ours loads of times, about once every 18 months, its an a*** getting the starters off especailly the No2,hatch open etc,crawl/fall though that little hatch backwards, oh the fun, once the head is off and out is not a bad job.

Yeh that one you got there looks inexess of 500 shots, ummmmmm, you know the score mate, no chances.

That cavitation looks interesting, (Lightning techie anorarks on )
Ive not come across that with any of ours, but that said we arent looking at high ‘shots’ on ours

Oh you wanna see our ‘prodder’ its a master piece mate, true LPG mod, but does the trick, Ive never tried it out on me self, maybe you should 😀

    Be good

    Great update Milt 😉

My your IPN starter combustion chamber looks a mess sir, a good clean out and a hoovering is whats called for me thinks 😉 Do you want to borrow our ‘standard’ proding tool for the main drain hole ?

Looks like the bottom drain ‘ole’ was totally soiled up, would have had hardly any drain pattern from that, I never seen one that clagged before, how were the plugs, no gaps I assume ?

Make sure you gap that atomiser sprayer and lap in the valve to proper ‘tols’, its ‘F’ important, but you know that

Looks like you had simular weather to us a Brunty today, by god it was cold and wet

Good luck with it lads 🙂

Had a chat with the guys down at LPG at brunty today as they were asembling a fresh set of mainwheels tyres onto hubs, they mentioned that they were from a guy in lincolnshire somewhere. Apparently he might have a decent set of Vixen ssize mainwheels

anybody know who it was the guy at brunty said he only got a lead via an e-mail

over to you but as the mains we have are a bit ropey for fast taxiing any leads would be greatful please PM if anyone knows

Hi mate, good to see you today, brrrrrrrr cold wernt it

Ive sent you a PM which has the E mail attached, it wasnt someone in lincolnshire though matey 😉
