“If no buyer is found, the Sport will be the first UK national newspaper to close since the demise of News International’s Today in November 1995.”

This – a national newspaper???? News about what???
Hollyoaks/Big Brother/XFactor??? Did anybody actually buy it? If they did, they certainly didn’t need to read the thing!!!

Ah it’s quite obviously not then! :p

I’m very certain it is! I remember seeing this in an article regarding its move to Wattisham. I can only remember it having the original nose cone removed and a conical “Mig 21” style cone pushed inside the nose to make it look like a soviet fighter. There was a photo in either Flypast or Aeroplane ages ago.

Any more pics of the Lightning nose?

One of my favorites from 2010
The October show at Duxford, how lucky we were with the fantastic weather!
The Sea Hawk looking to me like a flying fish!

Brilliant report of the show & some stunning photography, I live just across from Rougham & they fared a lot worse, in fact their show simply didn’t happen. So looks like Old Warden was the place to go, despite the weather. Did turn out nice in the end though. I do like the Kestrel shot, what a beauty!

thanks for uploading all those wittyly commented pics

Brilliant – Superb – Stunning, possibly some of the best Duxford reportage I have ever seen. Saturdays massed Spitfire display was mesmerising & unforgettable. I wish I could have made it there on Friday as well.

An inspiring collection of images Elliot, I often feel the same when I go to Duxford, and even when I stand in awe at all the superb engineering and what it all means, I rarely get home with some really meaningful images. I have taken some nice pics, but I should really “look” and understand what I’m looking at.
These look superb in B&W by the way.

Nope as far as I know the only Phantoms in this part of the world would be about four or five active with the Luftwaffe. I believe that Turkey operate a couple and according to this story Iran have currently operate a few: http://uskowioniran.blogspot.com/2010/03/three-iran-air-force-f-4-phantoms.html

That’s what I thought – about Jaguars as I read an article late last year about 2 seater Jags only used for taxying in a training capacity.
Sounds pretty interesting and will probably see details in the press about it maybe.
Mum was with me at the time and the first thing she said was “I recognise that as they used to fly over the house in Sudbury” refferring to the Wattisham F-4s, as they used to rattle the windows every sunday afternoon back in the mid 80s.

    Hi Martin,

If it had been an F-4 then it would have been breaking news all over the various enthusiast forums. For example picked up in comms and radar box/SBS, etc. There was a German F-4 operating in the UK last year.

Jaguars are quite regularly reported by UK enthusiasts who are convinced that they have seen them flying. Various types of aircraft can look very similar and get mixed up.

Ah thanks for that, yes I see what you mean about Jaguars and Phantoms from below.
There was a memorial service at either Dunmow or Earls Colne airfield for something, I think it was for the Paras in WW2 and the D-Day landings, and when I saw that on the news I thought maybe there was a flypast?
If Jaguars are flying still, wouldn’t they be in civilian hands or are they still flown in a training capacity for the RAF?

I’d say I am 95 percent certain it was 1980 but then again my memory could be getting a bit hazy. For the moment I’m sticking with 1980 but any early pics from Wattisham Airshow around this time would be superb to see.
If according to your memory it was a filthy day weather wise and it was 1981 then i’ll go with that. I can still remember the overall grey camo Phantoms rising up at the eastern end of the runway into extremely low cloud straking along an extremely rain sodden runway.
