    I’m sure the engines are Sunbeams and twin boom and I think three engines. so perhaps a Ganymede.

    It is perhaps worthy of note that all the western allies carried tricolor rudder flashes, UK, France, Belgium, Italy and the USA, so there must be a nod to convention somewhere.

    Further to me posting this I have in my book collection, Owen Thetford’s own copy of Camouflage ’14-’18 Aircraft ( a very slim A5 size volume) and in this he quotes “On Dec 11th 1914 an official order to the effect that all British aeroplanes were to carry Red, White and Blue cockades on the wings with a small Union Jack under the tips. The Union Jacks were dispensed with in early 1915. The tri-colour vertical rudder markings were introduced in May 1915 in the manner of the French.

    John: maybe they flew to RAF Peterborough itself (also known as Westwood).

    Sykes yard was in the centre of town.

    Laurence: Was Westwood open then? I do have a history of Westwood but I can’t just put my hands on it at the moment.

    Snafu: The Horsley was originally ordered as a Bomber with J block serials and the later ones. Mk.II, Mk.III were ordered under a convenient S block of serials probably because they were then primarily torpedo bombers and expected to operate over sea (as in the original concept of the N and S serials). The Mk.I and II Horsley were mainly of wooden construction.

    It is indeed a Brousard, Max Holste designs often featured twin fins, but by the look of it ,it’s suffered. It obviously has no engine as the prop’s off centre and it has a very stunted under-carriage.

    The long winged aeroplane refered too by J Boyle was the Hurel Dubois HD32.

    A very interesting picture which beggars some questions. S1238 ended it’s service with 100 Sqn and when this Sqn disbanded in 1933 it was at Donibristle Fife. So if this picture is indeed Peterborough, how did they get there? It would hardly be worth the transport costs even by rail unless they had flown down to Wittering.

    As I understand it, with a family name the lower case d is correct and also when the name is preceded by ‘The’ as in The de Havilland Aircraft Company… The capital D would seem correct when the name is used as a title such as
    De Havilland Mosquito. I’m sure some scholar versed in medieval French will come to our rescue.

    Just trying to sort out why Photobucket is making uploading difficult. I of course agree with AA that Hucknall is a very historic aerodrome. It was opened in WW.1 as a defence of Nottingham and training depot station and it was reopened as the Rolls Royce test airfield and also housed 504 Sqn (County of Nottingham). Local Labour Councillors have been trying for years to stop flying at the ‘drome’. It is one of the few green spaces left ( and one of the few places were there are lots of Skylarks) as the conurbation creeps out.

    The very long, hard runway had been blocked about 2/3rds of the length for some years with an RR engine test rig. There is of course a large Golf course adjacent to the field and a former colliery site.

    I arrived at Hucknall around 11.30 in heavy rain and low cloud. The rain abated about 13.00 and to my surprise, from the direction of the Rolls Royce hangar came a taxying ‘Iolar’ the Irish DH 84 Dragon from Aer Lingus. I was fortunate enough to be allowed a look in the Dragon by the genial Irish crew. Then out of the “clag” came an Auster AOP.9 followed by the P.51 ‘Marrinell’ and a US registered Pitts S.2A. The CFI gave his usual immaculate Cessna 150 Aerobat display on a grey background . Iolar next displayed and demonstrating the luck of the Irish the weather just magically brightened. From then on the very small crowd of only a hundred or so witnessed the arrival, landing and then superb long displays displays of the Yak team and the Spitfire PR.11 PL965, Mustang and Pitts Little Rumble in bright clearing skies. Well done the Merlin Flying club. I drove back home with the hood down!

    In the 30’s Gabee was Black and Silver. I’d be interested if anyone can confirm the later 1950’s colours.

    Swedish Skolfalken. (Mongoose) Open house (if I’m right) as I dropped in unprepared. The same a/c with a Lynx would be the Ovingsfalken
