It could be one of the one-offs that had to be constructed via Caproni.

I for one am interested in finding it’s identity. It is a very neat little aeroplane and by the prop rotation and top cowl vents it appears to have a Gipsy III (or possibly Major) engine. It is one I am totally unfamiliar with and does not appear in any of my books and there are huge blocks of Caproni (including Bergamaschi, Vizzola) numbers missing and I guess it will be in the 1– range.

Try ‘Sixty Glorious Years’ by Arthur Pearcy published by Airlife.

The only armed Whirlwind I’ve come across was XK969 a Mk.2 experimentally armed with a ww.1 type 303 Vickers machine gun installed in the cabin and firing through the open door.

Your Canberra crash photos are of WD933 the Sapphire 7 testbed which crashed on the 10/11/54 at Bitteswell.

I’m happy to call it a day on this one, so if Al will kindly give us the gen and where the picture is located.

The Westland book gives no armament for the Mk.10 but says the Mk.2 was trialed with 4 Nord SS-11’s.

Anyone know why it crashed?
It was engaged on relight tests when one engine failed to relight and the other was inadvertantly switched off and in the subsequent forced landing with u/c retracted it flipped over at the runway intersection. Text and good pictures on page 237 of the Delve,Green,Clemmons book.

Al did say open house, sooo, the first to stick up a target starts the ball rolling again.
John
