    Latest from Facebook

The Royal Air Force Museum, London
Alex Medhurst, General Manager of the Royal Air Force Museum Cosford, paying his respects yesterday at Cannock Chase cemetery on behalf of the Trustees, Director General, and Staff of the Royal Air Force Museum to Cpl Heinz Huhn, the Bombardier of the Dornier 17 that the Royal Air Force Museum raised successfully yesterday from Goodwin Sands.

Of the wreath laying, Peter Dye Director General of the Royal Air Force Museum stated : ‘Today as the Royal Air Force Museum takes stock of its success in raising the Dornier 17 from Goodwin Sands, it is appropriate to remember those who gave their lives during the Summer of 1940. In honouring a fallen German airman, we commemorate all those young men, from across the world, who died in the service of their country. The freedom defended by Britain at great cost in 1940 was built on tolerance, compassion and understanding. In remembering the sacrifice made by the airmen of both sides, we demonstrate our enduring belief in a future based on reconciliation, cooperation and shared values.’

Of the other 3 aircrew in the Dornier 17 : 2 survived and saw out the war in Prisoner of War Camps in Canada, the other member of the crew Wireless Operator Sgt Helmut Reinhardt died of his injuries and is buried in Ysselsteyn, Holland.

This would appear to be a data plate from a sub-component, giving order number, drawing number and aircraft type, so not much use in identifying the aircraft’s Werk Nr

Fair enough! I have just translated Zeichn as drawing, so guess not W/N as you say !

I don’t think that’s really reality. The Argentinians had been probing the task force with Boeing 707 reconnaisance flights and the size of the force and its ability would have been well known to Argentina. We had already by this stage had operations in South Georgia which would have left the Junta in no doubt as to the British will. Certainly America had been advocating a peace deal for a long time – however Thatcher’s government made it clear that it wasn’t on the table.
In terms of intent -the sinking of the Belgrano on the 2nd of May was the strongest message to the Junta and undoubtedly a sobering moment for the Argentine people.

True! But the Vulcan raid was when idea that there would be a negotiated settlement went out of the window (and rightly so in the face of Argentine aggression). Even after the South Georgia op the peace negotiations continued by USA. Sinking of the Belgrano confirm the British position.

Another Daily Mail classic ! -‘The raid, the longest bombing mission in history at the time, showed Argentina’s military dictator General Galtieri that Britain was serious about retaking the Falkland Islands

I guess dispatching a massive task force was too subtle!

I’m not sure that is complete hyperbole, even for the DM. When the Task Force was still sailing south there were still a number of peace proposals, from USA and Venezuela ( if memory is still working) and at a very late date there was expected to be peaceful outcome. Nobody believed UK would go to war for the islands. The first Vulcan strike ended that naive assumption. Indeed, it was intended as a statement of intent.
