I suspect the reporter has no idea why it’s come to be there in the first place

In Jonathan Falconer’s book “The Dam Busters” page 175 and published in 2003, the caption to this photo refers to him as S/L Townson, 617 Intelligence Officer. So if this is correct, the answer to your question is no. (Having seen this photo many times, I hadn’t realised or noticed that Gibson is sat in the middle on the right (behind Trevor-Roper))

BBMF also doubled back for the funeral of the Queen Mother when they arrived too early as the funeral cortege was just turning into The Mall and past over a second time when the cortege was mid-way up the Mall.

    Moggy,
returning to your original query, you will wish to read “Dambusters -The Definitive History of 617Sqd at war 1939-45” by Chris Ward and others published by Red Kite. The incident is described in some depth on page 212. It includes the details of the (sadly) unsuccessfull attempts post war to prosecute perpetrators of the crime by the French and the allied authorities in Germany.

It was in a TV series called “All Our Working Lives” in the early 80s. Each programme covered a different industry each week, the mines, shipbuilding etc. His was obviously in the one that covered the aviation industry. A lot of these programmes were “revisited” on BBC4 a couple of months ago, but not, I think, the aviation industry programme. Hope that helps.

I did have it on video. Not sure if I’ve still got it, I’m afraid.

Is that correct from Dr Fox, SoS for Defence, that only one had been built and was not airworthy???

Terrorists break into Woodford and plant bombs, which destroy Nimrod MR4s. Terrorists caught and are given life in prison.

    OR

Mix of civil servants and uniformed goons decide we cannot afford to introduce into service the Nimrod MR4, so order that they be scrapped. Mix of civil servants and uniformed idiots are then promoted and/or received knighthoods and big pensions.

Now the above is what I think I can get away with. What I would like to write would probably get me into some serious trouble. I think Spike Milligan had the right idea: Line up the [rude word] and shoot them with a blunderbuss filled with their own s**t.

Err, Phillip it’s the elected politicians who make the final decisions.

quite correct Pagen01. And of course Thatcher came to power in May 1979, a year or so after the Ark had gone

Good to see Hajo Herrman on fine form, complaining that it was RAF Bomber Command that started boming cities for no reason (and set the pattern for that type of warfare) and Germany just responded. He seems to have forgotten about Warsaw, Rotterdam etc. A brave man, no doubt, but a bit selective with his memory. This really should have been challenged.

More to the point, why did nobody in the main media, newspapers, BBC etc. pick up on this story? Unlike Alex’s return in 1939. Or is it now just too simple to fly to SA or anywhere in the world now.
I’d been led to believe that this record would probably never be broken.

Just ignoring this seems a shame really.

Some light aircraft flying around North Hampshire this afternoon and a biz jet out of Farnborough around 2.00pm which seemed to catch everyone’s attention. Ahh! the sound of jets! (…….and I should be in Spain right now!)

I must read the question in future! I think you’ll find that regards the wings he was given special consideration by the Air Board to wear the wings on account of learning to fly while with the Admiralty in 1911. He was Churchill after all.
