Vulcan emergency and BBMF Spitfire to the rescue!
Interesting article on the future of air shows following last weekend’s tragic events.
Well Perhaps the penny might finally drop as to the potential danger they have been putting themselves into just for the perfect photo or to save money.
Air Show postponed…….. First of many???
There’s a lot on the Manston accident here. It makes sober reading in light of recent events.
Good point Meddle. It was I who mentioned about Farnborough carrying on. These 3 accidents on the same day seem to have been almost lost to history for some reason.

Vulcan
Operations Director and Chief Pilot of the Vulcan to the Sky Trust, Martin Withers, has spoken to the CAA, and has released this statement:
“I am pleased to report that I have received assurances from our contacts at the CAA that XH558’s 2015 display routine is not classified as aerobatic, and so consequently, we are hoping to continue to fly on through XH558’s last season with minimal changes to our display.”
Non-paying spectators. Tragic. But will people realise that the rules don’t allowing flying over the paying public actually on the airfield? Does the Mail know or care?
All I can think is that “ex RAF pilot Leslie Hatcher, 71” has been misquoted in the Daily Mail. how do you remain within the airfield boundary? The plane didn’t fly over the paying crowd. How is he supposed to avoid the A27?
Oh dear!

I can’t believe “social media” or here. People are already saying the restriction apply to the Reds and Typhoons and BBMF. What bit of civilian (as in CAA) owned vintage jets do people not understand?
Good grief. Moggy the nit-picker…
Look back at the history of air displays, to the guys who barnstormed and did crazy stunts in aeroplanes at shows or even just in a vacant field for a whip-round. Feel offended by the word yourself but in this event it is totally in context – unless it is just the mention of Wikipedia that has lit your touchpaper.
Barnstorming and aerobatics are two different things.
When the DH110 crashed at Farnborough in 1952, the last time any member of the public was killed at a UK airshow, 63 years ago, Nevilie Duke famously immediately took off in, coincidently, a Hunter, and displayed in front of the crowd even while the bodies were still being removed. The show went on. The next day many thousands attended to show their support to the event.
A different time I guess.
Regardless of that, Tempestnut, non paying spectators will always be in potentially more danger than anyone who pays and goes onto the airfield itself, due to the display axis and the distance which have to be kept from the fee paying crowd. That’s a fact.
BBC lunch time news section on airshow accidents, going back to 1952 at Farnborough, and the rules for them, seemed a bit more balanced, and the man didn’t use the word “Stunt” he actually said several times “aerobatics”
Regardless of what the OED says, the word “stunt” implies something reckless – and the media know it!
