Jack : there is no contradiction.
In early March, integration was underway (we don’t know when it started). In May, it’s ready. GBU-49 can be used if needed. After all, it’s a GPS enhanced GBU. Nothing new for the Rafale !
I don’t know why you talk about F3 O4T. F3 already uses stuff planned for later standard, starting with the DDM NG for example.
Rafale F3 was already capable to use both GPS/INS and laser guided bombs.
I guess it’s why everybody can read in RAIDS Aviation n°1 on page 25 that Rafale is already qualified to use the GBU-49…
Speaking of light-hearted, here is the first of a four part look at Eurofighter World:
http://hushkit.wordpress.com/2012/05/09/eurofighter-world-undressed-part-1/
Thank you Hush-kit, up to now :D, I enjoy reading your “blog”. š
and you get to be called on it.
Then place your shot carefully and save your ammo. Carpet bombing is inefficient, costly, and make no land worth living in.
Oh why oh why oh why couldn’t you have said that 3 pages earlier?:)
My first point was not exact, it seems.
On a sepearte note, do the French not use a2a refuelling for the Rafale? Do they just stick them in the air until the oil runs out on the M88? Or is a2a refuelling used for the Rafale in the same way as it is in every other western airforce?
Of course we use it. I guess as much as possible, after all. It’s all a matter of fuel efficiency : if tankers are available, why bringing a third tank which compromise aerodynamics and increase significantly fuel consumption ?
So, let’s sort it out :
-Typhoon has an edge because it has a better low cost weapon (namely the PWIV, which is a highly maneuverable, inflight selectable fuse, dual mode bomb). Point agreed. No need to discuss this. Of course AASM can do the same, at much greater range and reduced reaction time, no problem, it’s also way more expensive.
-PWIV better than GBU-49 ? Point agreed, a bit more expensive, a bit better.
-Rafale is better in A2G overall. Point agreed.
About 500kg bombs being less useful, one should reconsider his opinion : France lacked this during the libyan war.
So, what’s the problem, exactly ?
I have to admit that you did a great work, Jack. Thanks.
Of course, Scorpion’s posts deserve equal congratulations. š
Seriously, TMor?
Yes.
But hey, if I “Provoked” then someone obviously took the bait.
Exact.
EELightning have provocated some off topic answers
Strangely ironic coming from you.
Saying so is not enough.
Let’s move on. What else on the Eurofighter side ? (and only Eurofighter ?)
Yes, I deliberately didn’t mention the Italian Typhoon pilot’s claims in case the usual Rafale-Trolls came out of the woodwork (one of which had a nasty habit of posting Rafale news on Starstreak from January 31st), obviously my own efforts weren’t enough.
You provocated :
I didn’t mention the ‘R’ word and the Italian Typhoon pilot’s claim in case the thread got messed up for the next dozen pages, or more. I’m surprised there hasn’t yet to be honest, internet connection must be bad in a certain part of Europe, either that or they’re still in bed…
Yes : the thread was just ok, but you couldn’t let it go !
That the NL never conducted any evaluation of the aircraft in form of flight trials is true however
As a result, the Dutch were only able to assess the F-35 on paper. However, a Dutch Air Force contingent came to Dassault to undertake a comprehensive in-flight evaluation of the Rafale. They flew several missions to assess for themselves how the Rafale handled.
In 2010, Canada parliament :
http://www.parl.gc.ca/HousePublications/Publication.aspx?DocId=4765987&Language=E&Mode=1&Parl=40&Ses=3%23Int-3473476#Int-3474371
Obviously, at that time it was not possible to make an in-flight evaluation of the F-35, so the evaluation was made from the paper information provided by the manufacturer to the Dutch air force, whereas the Dutch air force went on the spot to where the other aircraft were manufactured and performed an in-flight evaluation of those aircraft. That in-flight evaluation was a pretty comprehensive one. It involved several flights addressing several types of operational concerns. They made their evaluation and they came back with their conclusions, and the result of that evaluation was published in the Dutch press.
In fact, we don’t care. EELightning have provocated some off topic answers, but we still are in a Typhoon news thread…
I plan on writing such an article on my forum, but it’s time consuming and I can’t do it right now.
Thank you Jack.
I feel I should add that my approch is sincere (nothing to do with Rafale). It’s in fact very hard to ‘know’ the Typhoon since its upgrades seems to change all the time…
That’s why I asked Scorpion about his message. But, hey, Scorpion, don’t worry ! This is not very important to me. It’s only a hobby š

Is this opening post up-to-date ?
-Yes, but…. [arguments] !
-Of course, but … [counter-arguments] !
And so on…:D
