I gave up scanning prints due to poor quality , thou my scanner was not the best money could buy.
i know use my 300d with 28-70 lens and take a shot of the pics they turn out so much better and is much quicker to down load the pics from the card to pc and in to photo shop a good digi camera i find is far better than most scanners .
a tripod and bit of practice will see top results.

Shutter speed of around 320th down to 250th work well for most flying shots .
as for props spinning on the ground static you can go lower for a fuller prop circle.200th down to 125th or lower if you have a steady hand.

Sounds like you allready have a good idea what you want . seems to be along the lines of a 350d canon and the sigma 50-500 , the kit lens on the 350d aint bad good wide angle for your statics and the bigma for close and far shots. dont take s.d cards thou but the compact flash cards are cheapish now days ,

At the end of the day they are both very good light boxs . the question you must ask yourself when looking and holding a nice new camera body in the slr area is .
Lens if you want to shoot aircraft static and flying you need lens this is the bit that gets the best pics . crap lens crap pics in a lot of cases. so you must look at them 1st really what size and what price and will it give you the quality shots you are after .

Had a look in today and its looking like a nice event big marquee by the lake with old ww2 search lights set up by the side and large boffer guns looks like a stunning place to hold the evening events in . the field was filling with old miliatry vehicles, etc looks like a nice weeknds events will be held there.

Would have thought the 70-200 was the weapon of choice to be honest . but as some have stated the 28-135 they are useing seems to work for them . 2 points thou the 28-135 i would guess works well because of shooting with the 1.6X crop of the digi slr. on the other hand the 70-200 on a full frame digi slr would be the perfect lens .
