Sea Harrier losses
Hi RonOO-RN Sea Harrier losses 1980-1996 were 28 with 3 lost to ground defences in conflict, considering the low roster numbers this a costly exercise to maintain ,I just hope the F 35 at its cost of ?? maybe AUD$100 mill does not loose these numbers. Fortunately only 8 aircrew were lost. The RAF 1969-1996 lost 78 Harriers & the USMC 1971-1996 lost 103. I do not have any figures for the last 10 years. Having said that I understand that the Harrier is the first of the STOL breed & problems are to be expected, also the Harrier has been a proven sucess in combat. However at the cost of new F 35 losses like this would be unsustainable for all but the wealthiest few nations. For the UK the loss of aircraft was probnably of lesser importance as it got all the spinoffs as the manufacturer regardless of cost, which is fair enough.
After reading this story I had to check the Calender to make sure it was not April Fools Day
Santi-Great comparison chart & pics. There is no doubt that there will be quite a few 15000-25000t flat decked ships capapable of operating the F 35B coming on line in the near future .If they opt to operate the F35B they had better have plenty of money ,for setting up this operation would be very expensive indeed. Not only is the airgroup and its support expensive but if the F35B is anything like the Sea Harrier the cost of replacing the incredible number of planes lost to accidents etc. will be prohibitive.
Rafale- Quick request, does anyone know a link from where I can get Fox three 9 .Have there been any on the Web since Fox Three 8.
This ship looks absolutely hideous,it will never feature on any “Favorite Warship” thread.
Hi Santi -Good ifo re the hanger of the Chakri ,the HDW 10,000 tonne design is shown & some specs. given on the armada site, there is also an HDW 7500 tonne version
http://www.armada.ch/welcome.cfm
Check out past issues & iss.5 -2005 called A-B ASAP is the issue with it in. I expect most members would be aware of this website anyhow. They arent small carriers but as you mentioned the 10,000t version is similar in concept to the V-VAC
The reason I originally asked if the Trackers had been re-engined successfully was because I thought I had read [somewhere some time ago ]that it had not worked with any real success. Anyhow we can still use them with original engines on our upgraded HMAS Melbourne with success I think
Iwo Jima Carrier
Heloo again Shiplover-You are a treasure trove of diagrams that I have been searching the Web for years after, thankyou .I do not have the collection of mags. that you can get over the other side of the world either. The pic. of the Iwo that you posted says LHDX Programm aus 1981 which suggests that it is the design offered to Aus. The artists rough impression in a book I have may be just that ,an impression. The LHDX has the port lift well back from the basic design & also shows the Sea Sparrow launcher in use on some Iwos. The pic I have suggests SM1 but I suspect Sea Sparrow. The Aus govt. only sprecified CIWS [I think?] Your pic does not have a ski jump but the Aus. requirement was that the ship needed to be able to operate a mix of STOL & helos. even though there was supposedly no plans by the Govt. to purchase the Harrier & a Ski Jump was not probably not mandatory. Anyhow at over $700mill it would have been pretty expensive probably $1-2billion in todays money.
Lastly & not wishing to be seen as a nit picker I do think that the other pics posted show an Austal Catamaran carrier, this is I believe the Incat Bollinger carrier I posted on #39.I just wish some of the designs that have been posted had been built so we could have seen if they had been practical
I just love the look of the Maraseti, I just hope the fire control systems can make good use of all that mean looking gear. It is a bit powerful to just be tooling around the Black Sea
Iwo Jima Carrier
Hello Shiplover-I have no info on the J.J.McMullen design but the Iwo Jima based Carrier had the following specs. Length oa 648.6, Length between perpendiculars 598.0, Length Flight Deck 636.0, Beam wl. 94.0, Beam Flight Deck 126.0, Full Load Disp. 21407 tonnes, Draft-navigational 28.4, Speed 24 knots, Range 7000nm, Machinery 2-LM2500GT,40,000 2 CRP prop, Aircraft 22+, Ski Ramp 12% Lifts 2-both deck edge, Armament SM1, 2-CIWS, Accomodation Senior Sailors 172 ,Junior Sailors 884 Officers 120. Command & Control- NCDSmod., Link11, Air Search AN/SPS49,AN/SPS52C ,Surface Search AN/SPS67, Navigation AN/SPS67, Carrier Approach AN/SPN35A,IFF, TACAN ASN/URN-25 TACAN. I have a rough & small atists impression of it but am having uploading due to computer problems, however a starboard side on view is about what you would expect ,Iwo Jima with a lengthened forward structure made into a Ski Jump similar to the Chakri. Deckedge Lift,Sm1 appears to be forward of the bridge which resembles the Iwo. The ship seems to have cleaned up the Xmas Tree look of the Iwo. As you can see it has not got the steam machinery of the Iwo but still requires a large crew, I assume the crew figs. included the Air group.
I know that some tracker upgrades to turboprop have been attempted, do you know if they had been successful. I like this air group especially the AEW aspect ,it would have been well balanced .Spending on upgraded equipment is often less politically dangerous than spending on big ticket items [new carriers] that do not always attract votes. Can you tell me which planes would have been in the hanger and what & where on deck pls.
It is not outrageous when compared to the cost of the Aust. Seasprites. Eight is a very small number I thought they were going for 12, probably too expensive.
Various Carriers
Hello Analyo-I checked out the Thai site & found the pics. of the Chakri were great, however the writing was hard to understand.
Hello Pioneer-There have been some interesting designs on this thread, most of which I never thought I would see, but the one you posted is the most unusual, I can now see that there were many people with designs for small carriers spawned by the arrival of the Harrier.I am glad that the RN or RAN did not waste money on this one.
Hello Badger 1968-A decision was made on 25thFeb,1982 by the Aust. Govt. to buy the HMS Invincible which had been offered for sale, the total cost being $AUD478 million. This did not include the Sea Dart & a study was commenced to examine the implications of buying it also installing a Phalanx CIWS.The RAN was not commited to having to buy the Sea Dart installation. It was all a waste of time as the deal was scuppered by the Falklands War.
I have wondered what would have happened if the Aust. PM Malcolm Fraser had not offered to let Britain withdraw from the sale.I imagine that Britain would have kept it regardless. It has been speculated that Fraser was glad to get out of a deal that had little political gain at the time & was bound to be an election issue. He lost the election anyhow & the deal would have been scrapped in one way or another regardless.
rafale fox three
Nothing to do with this thread but I did not want to start a request thread. Please does anyone have a link to any Fox Three newsletters that were put out by Rafale International beyond Fox Three 8. There is an Isoshop link that I can Google but it ends up nowhere of use to me.
