Hi Stevo-I agree with you regarding the fine performance of Hermes & Invincible in the Falklands. However RN anyalysts & Falklands vets have talked on many occasions of the operational difficulties posed in the Falklands caused by lack of a proper fixed wing AEW platform.[The Sea King Aew was only a so so patch up solution] The same applies today probably more so .

    Carrier Feasibility

Hello Shiplover-Which design are you refering to when you ask if it will work?I would like join in & give an opinion, however I must admit that my nautical experience amounts to 3 years in the Smithton Sea Scouts 53,54,55.[We never went out in a boat] also about half a dozen or so trips on the Bass Strait Ferry.
I like the way the US designs military gear not just ships. They work out what they want to do & then design the gear to achieve that end. Many other countries build things & then try to find some way to make them worthwhile.
No carrier these days is of any use unless it has a strong AEW & intelligence platform that it can operate.[Not a helo] It is pointless building a cute ship if you then have to go & try and build a plane that will fit it.eg Gripen.Work out what planes you are going to operate [proven designs] then build a carrier to suit, with some growth built in to the design. If this ends up beyond your means do what most countries do & do nothing
Having said all those negative things I just wish Australia had a carrier no matter what size.

Good thinking D’lacy, I agree with your idea . The early buy of the F35 that we will get is bound to be full of previously unknown party tricks & should keep the investigation teams in business for many years, not to mention the Treasurer writing out cheques to pay for all the ‘fixes’.

It will never happen, but if it did I believe that the Superbug is the only solution. It may not be the best but it is reasonably good & has a few things going for it. Firstly it is most likely available within a reasonable timeframe.Secondly it WORKS,it should be almost immune to a procurement stuffup. It is reasonably priced but I doubt the final cost of any 4th gen planes is all that different. It carries all the ordinance Aus. will want a fair distance, & give a good account of itself in A2A against all but the latest & fully fitted out anythings.Nothing can replace the F111 long range strike,so why try.

Getting larger by the minute carriers

Shiplover.- Thanks for posting the extra info & drawings of Bremer Vulcan designs, also the drawing of the Ryojo reveals a bit more than some of the pics. I have seen. However did lifting that forward bridge up a level fix things or did the ship manage to avoid any more storms, lost at Santa Cruz she may not have been tested out.I have always been intrigued by the pop up Heath Robinson device used on the HMS Furious up forward as a sort of bridge.
Also the ADS design has a distinct Hermes/Viraat look about it with a few differences of course,in fact if Storch & yourself had not told us about its French & Italian origins I would have suspected it was an Indian effort.
Storch.- In an article I got off the web some years ago discussing the plans for the NUM, it was sugested that a better way forward for Italy at that time would be to build another Garibaldi but with significantly improved C4I capabilities & room for an embarked staff. Simultaneous construction of several LPH/ LPD would also take place ,these would be like Fincantieris LPD/LPH-12000t project. After that longwinded windupthe question is do you have any pics. or drawings of this LPD design. I know it is not really part of this thread but I have had no luck in the past with this so I thought I would give it a try.

Slippery. The oft used term “the wheels have fallen off”was never more apt. Sure, all older aircraft are not necessarily finished because of some mishap & yes they are only grounded. There will be no problem to get a team to investigate the problem, I suspect there is probably one on permenent standby 24/7.It is time to cut our losses with this old junk.Even if we only bought 12 new planes it would give us more operational aircraft than The F111 can usually provide. It is a bit sad for Carlo though.

    Small Carriers

Shiplover, Firstly with regard to your own concept-The bridge and flyco would get a rough ride perched up forward on a 200m ship but it does have some advantages. Also I cant tell from the pics if any allowance has been made to store and move ordinance .
Secondly I cant get a better pic on line of the Incat design as it was miniscule in the first place .I also agree with your comments, however Incats original concept which was fairly similar to the one posted was a Helicopter Transporter {Posted by Ja Worsley on another thread somewhere} this idea was more practical being used as a logistics supply role ,but I still have reservations about it.
Lastly, I would be interested to see any other Vulcan Bremer designs as I had never expected to see the one you posted yesterday, thanks for that.

Well said Scooter, I am new to forums and if it was not possible to discuss subjects dealt with in the past new members might as well not turn up.
Anyhow briefly the RAAF have said on a number of occasions that an interim plane to replace either F111 or FA18 had not been a serious option & I cant see the latest F111 fiasco changing things. The F15E/F or FA18E/F are the obvious options & I think the FA18 could be got in reasonable time.It wont happen unfortunately.

    Incat Carrier

Nice idea Shiplover,if you are interested in conceptual carriers try this one from Incat the designers of the hsv tss, also their HMAS Jervis Bay design was the inspiration for the LCS.

    protean carrier

Shiplover. With regard to the Protean conceptual carriers, well I too have wondered what they would have looked like. Aside from the specs. the book “Wings across thr Ocean” says-
Yard Ltd. UK, a conceptual design using a merchant ship hull & main machinery as a basis, modular design PROTEAN.
I would be surprised if this shipyard still exists, it is also interesting that the specs for the Rosenblatt SCS that I quoted resemble those of the Chakri Narubet which was built 15 years later by Bazan. The design for the Chakri was chosen over a design for a carrier by Vulcan Bremer {I think 7800t} so I wonder what that would have looked like.

I went to a show earlier in the year & the Canberra was still in the hanger & did not fly which was a pity as it was the one I wanted to see most of all. However seeing the Hudson & Meteor was worth the trip for me.
